I call it hortitheft, but when I go for walks I find seeds like holly hock, parks with a very old iris busting out! I break off a little peice..gardeners love to share. I started way too many tomatoes. I wish some younger people would come around for some . Also it's easy to save seed ! Get heirloom..grow for years!

I LOVE that so many people are talking about (showing how to) growing a garden...VICTORY gardens! Yep! you CAN grow Anywhere! You'll learn...yes, 'you are what you eat' applies to plants too, but hey...every living thing FIGHTS for life even if you plant it in rocky soil...use what you've got & improve it as you learn & grow but don't let 'bad soil' stop you from spreading the seeds! Luke 8:5-15 :).

If you are using the strawberry containers as mini greenhouses, you can line the bottom with a coffee filter so the soil doesn't escape out of the holes when you water the seeds.

Hi Christa, I started everything from seed this year for the first time in decades of gardening. It has been trickier than I thought it would be! Granted some of the seeds were almost 10 years old so I expected some resistance but most were from this season or last. At this point I have everything growing that I wanted to plant so I have been planting starts to give to neighbors (or strangers if they ask) to encourage them to grow SOMETHING. ANYTHING! I am getting subversive and trying to get the little kids in the neighborhood to grow radishes so the parents get involved! :) I planted a salad bowl for my mail carrier (she was thrilled). I agree 100% about getting seeds from the grocery store in the form of food. One year I bought a single pepper of 6 different varieties, a cantaloupe, several potatoes and some live herbs. The cashier looked at me kinda funny so I informed her that I was using all of them for seeds. At that point she and several people in the line behind me all broke into huge smiles and said wow! What a great idea! Almost everything grew great! And I got stuff for dinner! I love what you do and how you live your life! I wish you were my neighbor! Stay safe, be well and all the best from California 💛

I love your videos. I dry the sage leaves from my garden and make sage stick bundles to keep hanging in my kitchen. They're supposed to cleanse and purify the air. I regard this practice as akin to using holy water or maybe just a fumigant to offset anything bad or bad vibes. Also, this year I've discovered that a weed called hairy bittercrest grows abundantly. It's edible but only really nice when v.young. Thanks again. I love listening to your voice. It's very soothing and I appreciate the bible reading. Love from Ireland

My mom used to use faucet water that she would put in used, cleaned milk gallon jugs. She would let it sit to get room temperature which the plants like better. Also, allowing it to sit would let the chlorine in the water dissipate. Her flowers and indoor plants are always beautiful!

Ok, I know this video was 2 years ago, but I have to comment on gardening in Iowa. I live in Northwest Iowa where the soil is some of the finest in the world. I gave up gardening a few years ago because of my black thumb in spite of the wonderful soil 😁. So I guarantee, you can’t look at the soil here and grow a garden 😂. I did start up again last spring and had some minimal success with containers, so I will keep trying. I appreciate all the tips you shared here, and in all your videos for that matter. I hope you will keep the videos coming. God bless!

Juice and plastic milk containers make excellent trowels or dirt sifters with a few cuts and/or pokes. :) They also make excellent - food grade - containers for plants or starters. Keep seeds in the fridge for longer viability. If a plant fails, compost. :) ... In my garden - popping corn, rabbits are refusing to let it grow :( ... Sweet corn ... Copenhagen Cabbage - not coming to head, but they are easily wearable as full coverage loin cloth LOL ... butternut squash, going nuts.... pumpkin ... tomato ... pepper ... cauliflower ... beans ... peas ... basil, rosemary, sage, peppermint ... okra .. cucumber ... hot peppers ... mixed flowers ... carrots, potatoes, radish (going to seed), lettuce (seeding), spinach (seeding)... honey dew and cantaloupe because they freeze so well ... no luck with sunflowers, the wildlife eats them before they can even get their real leaves. :( I need to make some fencing.

I had to call a couple times to get the right person who could help but if you keep on it, you will find them. There are also grants and greenhouse grants, I'm still waiting for follow up from last year as some don't know the gov programs available locally but keep on them and you may find more help. I’m a certified master gardener, but I enjoyed watching this anyway! Two years ago I got into prepping and survival items. I stocked away some vegetable seeds for an emergency like you described. I decided this year was enough of an emergency for me to break them out and plant them. I was so glad I had them because seems like they’re hard to find as lots of folks are planting gardens this year. Plus this way I didn’t have to get out in the stores to buy any. Great topic and I’m so glad you did a video on this. Would love updates as the growing season goes on. By the way, never compost poke salad plants that have tons of berries on them. I used that compost on my garden this year and I have tons of poke salad sprouting everywhere!! By the way fig trees get pretty big. May want to move it a little further out so you’ll have more room.

I love seeds, I collect them, haha. I recommend trying to keep produce to US only, produce from other countries will probably be irradiated before entering the US, making the seeds non viable. Also, if dollars are tight for garden tools, plastic juice and milk containers make pretty sturdy trowels and soil sifters. Even planters, actually. Vege peels and discard can be cooked up for fertilizer. I love gardening, thank you so much for the video! It helps my mood a lot ^_^

Love your video's... solid energetic information ,, no matter what the topic ....skills from experience ,, willingness to share ,, loving life !! Amazing heart and generosity ,,.... I have followed your channel for a few years now and gained improvements from so many tips you share......seems like you must have lived many lives before to hold and share such a wide range of skills ,,,, I am so thankful that I found your channel.. ..By the way , I work as a state noxious weed superintendent , and have learned that a " Weed " is a plant that is growing in a location where it 's not wanted .... I also was raised to know weeds as a non- productive plant of no value .... Education is the key .....Who knew some "Weeds " such as the" Dandelion " ..is not only completely edible ,, but has many good nutrients as well ,,as many others.....Education is Key ,, there are many good sources out there ....and for some of this learning CAN not only feed the brain ,, it can feed the body....... Thank You so much for what you do.........Stay Safe and God Bless.......

Yes! I keep a couple unexpired Patriot Seed Vaults on hand. As they expire, I use the seeds and get a new vault. I also have a ton of Baker Creek seeds. I apparently have no self control when on their website.

Well done. Would like to see more of the strawberry deal - never saw that before. Big benefit of the sunflowers - they attract the pollinators. Grow heirloom. Save the seeds, plant over and over.

I don't know, my thumb is VERY brown but I still try. I think I'm going to have to stick with buying my plants. I tried to do everything from seed but when I transplant my starts I kill them and don't really know what I'm doing! I had beautiful tomato seedlings but when I transplanted them to solo cups, I had healthy stems. All the leaves died and fell off!! I will try again next year maybe. Lol.

Start in cardboard, toilet paper tubes, cup carriers, jiffy pots. When time to transplant, plant into bigger pots or into the garden. Do not take out of the starter mini pots. Not disturbing the roots gives a better success rate.

Thank you for the encouragement! I feel like I can tackle this now even with my black thumb, haha. Baker Creek is awesome! They have vegetables I have never seen before and vegetables in all colors! Best of all...it's non GMO, organic seeds. Heirloom tomatoes like our granddaddy's had.

I love this channel! The verse at the end usually hits a cord. I would seriously consider planting the fig tree somewhere else! They get big.
