I am a pro Jazz musician all my live. I have a big jazz collection myself. I see so many videos of recommended jazz records on RU-vid, yours is so far the best. Great recommendations, I have most of them myself. Thumbs up for a great help to any Jazz collector, thank you.

Jimmy Smith's Blue note albums don't sell in the prices of his labelmates because they sold well BITD and aren't really valued today since the organ isn't audiophile. When they reissued some of his albums onto cds, they kept sessions together so the track listings aren't the same as the original albums. By the late 80's they abandoned that strategy as did Mosaic when they did their box sets. They kept albums together and then put bonus material afterwards. Any Booker Ervin, Art Farmer, Benny Golson, Clark Terry, Clifford Brown/Max Roach, Jimmy Smith, George Benson, Hank Mobley (not typically cheap), Tina Brooks, Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, Gene Harris, Paul Chambers, Stephane Grappelli, Tal Farlow, Horace Silver (50's and 60's only), and anything on Pablo are the heart and soul of my cd collection. I have 5-50 cds on all of these players as leader. The window for core titles on cd is closing. There just aren't that many used cds out there for titles like you just showed. If you order new, expect a cd-r. Curtis Fuller is one of the best trombonists and has the edge over JJ.

Absolutely perfect list. The Jazz Immortal LP I don’t have, but after you mentioned it I listened again and put it on the list.

Thanks David. It's a great session, one of those "carpe diem" recordings that Dick Bock and Les Koenig made a habit of when east coasters came through town.

Great segment and a great list of affordable recordings. I own 16 of the 30 that you listed. Looks like I have work to do...

Great concept and video - thanks for the inspiration. I find it refreshing - almost a relief - that you go in the opposite direction of some YT channels that compare a 100$ release with a 350$ release of the same record (which often also are out of print...). Thanks for keeping the focus on the music, Allan.

Thanks. And no you won't catch me paying big bucks for 45 rpm reissues. Not judging those who do, as their ears are probably better than mine. But IMHO there is copious happy hunting to be had at the lower end of the scale.

They are audible on some of my videos. I have been thinking about a blooper reel of me losing it and opening the door to shout at the dogs. My wife says that doesn’t help.

Enjoyed this video very much. Recently I picked up a copy of Andre Previn And His Pals playing the music from the film Gigi. Very enjoyable music and affordable as well. Thanks for the recommendations.

Great episode Allan! I have a fair sampling of your 30 recommendations in my modest collection and agree that they are great bargains at under $30 or less...the Jazztet LP in particular. My copy is an 80's pressing on Chess but it still sounds great. And I am one who thinks the Sinatra -Jobim Lp is one of Frank's best. One LP that IMHO belongs on this list is Milt Jackson/Coleman Hawkins "Beanbags" on Atlantic. A killer record by 2 jazz giants.

I found a ‘57 OG Contemporary Copy of Andre Previn trio PalJoey in a thrift store last week for $5. Took a chance and was pleasantly surprised by it.

My rule of thumb is anything Shelly Manne appears on is worth picking up. Not many duds in his session work or his work as a leader.

I was lucky enough to snap up a near mint copy of the Previn 'West Side Story' on the UK Vogue label for £1.50 a few months back. Certainly the best record he ever made.

Spit out my coffee laughing at “Not on some dodgy East European label run by guys in track suits and gold chains.” That made my day, sir. Thank you. You forgot to add these guys pressing the bootleg albums from CDs have lit cigarettes dangling from their lips. Even though the vinyl community has outted these pressing plants, I’m still very confused that these albums show up online on major retail sites and record stores. Great video!
@TenMinuteRecordReviews
@TenMinuteRecordReviews Год назад
Thanks. Yeah they still seem to operate with impunity and I'm surprised Discogs hasn't come under pressure to call these unofficial releases. A legal loophole, no doubt.

When I’m on a pick and see those Eastern Bloc bootleg records, I can smell the bad stench “Cool Water” cologne wafting off the cellophane. Don’t get me started on Discogs, Allan. No idea who is policing that site.

Great idea for a video. Much appreciated. What I call "Modern" Jazz is not my strong suit. I agree about trombone and baritone sax could stand more exposure as well.

Alfie is actually my favorite Rollins recording. Very surprised at how underrated it is. I would add A Portrait of Thelonious by Bud Powell to the list. It's a stunner of an album and can be had for well under $20.

@@TenMinuteRecordReviews hope you are able to find a copy. Bud Powell and Monk were close friends so Bud definitely does a great job of interpreting Monk. The sound quality is also very good, definitely higher quality than his blue note recordings.

Thanks! My stepson is the master of that one - plus a wicked Christopher Walken. Some evenings the house is a bit like The Trip. My wife rolls her eyes justifiably.

If you are willing to do the work, finding many for less than $5 is out there. I am a regular at Princeton Record Exchange who puts time dates on records. As time goes by the price drops.

@@TenMinuteRecordReviews It gets in records and grades them. All get a sticker with a date on them. Daily or weekly employees go through the bins, selecting ones for the $1 bin - I've been going to this store for over 20 years, and material is always revolving. All it takes is patience as you have to go through 25 - 40 bins of these records. Frequent visits helps as these records blow out quickly.

Understandably there can be a bit of variation in "cheap heat" uk vs us, but european labels like ecm usually are similar. The Alfie soundtrack is a fave of mine, interstingly its a re-record of the OST, the music on film was recorded in UK and featured Stan Tracey on piano, worth checking out his Under Milkwood 👌70s reissue on steam label to be had cheaper.
