Name: Paro Takstang (Tiger’s Nest) Location: Paro Valley, Bhutan, Asia  Paro Taktsang or the Tiger’s Nest is a prominent and sacred Buddhist monastery located in the cliffside of the upper Paro Valley in Bhutan.  Paro Taktsang monastery is situated on a steep cliffside at an elevation of about 3,120 meters above sea level.  The monastery is believed to have been first built in 1692, around the cave where Guru Padmasambhava , a revered Buddhist master, meditated in the 8th century.  According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava flew to the site on the back of a tigress from Tibet, hence the name "Tiger's Nest".  He meditated in the cave for three years, three months, three weeks, three days, and three hours, subduing local demons and establishing Buddhism in Bhutan.  It is constructed in a distinctive Bhutanese architectural style, with white-washed buildings adorned with colorful murals and intricate woodwork.  Visitors to Paro Taktsang must hike to reach the monastery for about 9 Km (To and fro).  The trek starts from the base of the mountain and takes around 2-3 hours each way, depending on the pace of the hiker.  Beyond its religious importance, Paro Taktsang is also a symbol of Bhutanese culture and heritage.  It is one of the most photographed and recognized landmarks in Bhutan, attracting tourists and pilgrims from around the world.
