Winning a war and the advent of peace is indeed an incredible optimism, as you say! They fought for their independence over a period of many hundreds of years!
Exploring Vietnam is one of my life's biggest joys. I try to keep it off the beaten path, but even those "touristy" bits are fabulous. I'm still figuring out what it is that's so fascinating about this place. Guess it's the people and the overall way of life, societal bonding, whatever. Your work and your narration are brilliant! Keep up the great work, Mark. I'm looking forward to visiting Vietnam again (very) soon.
I left Vietnam in 1991 when I was 5 years old and I still remember looking back as I walked to the plane seeing all those people watching us board. The picture at 4:15 definitely brought back memories. Thank you bringing back old footages of Vietnam.
@@rustycompasstravel Maybe Tung was referring to your pronunciation of Vietnamese peoples' names and places. Anyway, loved the video - especially your excellent narration - and I'm looking forward to more. Thank you for your efforts in creating them, Mark!
Thank you for this nostalgic look at Vietnam from the past. My first visit was in 1991. The country fascinated me and I have been back many times since and will continue to do so. Would love to see more videos from you, I always thoroughly enjoy them.
I feel so bad when seeing Vietnam right now with its development in an unsustainable way. The old scenery was far better and precious to see. Thank you.
What a wonderful video; I want more! Your videos were a great help when I visited Vietnam for the first time this past February. Would love to take one of your tours, but they aren't in my budget as a solo travel who wants his own room...but think you for all the wonderful tips!
Thank you for your work and Rusty Compass videos! Your work help me understand and appricate these wonderful people. Also inspired both of my visits to VietNam.
What a lovely video Mark. Congratulations on your 30th anniversary of opening up Vietnam to the world. Before my first trip to Vietnam in 2013 I watched all of your RU-vid videos and learnt so much. The Vietnamese government and tourism owes you so much Mark 😊 Keep up the good work and look after yourself.
Mark, stunning stuff mate. Thanks for this video. I remember the furniture shop area you mentioned and luckily, I took your advice and went there The rooftop chopper operation building was another I went to. It's because of you. I say thank you. Hope Rusty Compass cafe is doing fine. Went there often. Trevor Powis Cohuna Victoria Australia 🇦🇺
Fantastic video - that time must have been an incredible experience to be in Vietnam. I hope Vietnam can hold on to its authentic roots of drive and ambition and that every Vietnamese can enjoy the new Vietnam.
Thank you Mark, great content. I have been travelling to Vietnam for 13 years now. Inspired by your videos I might add. Love the country and people. Shame in one way that change has come so quickly. Hope you keep posting films on Vietnam for many years to come 🙏🏼
WOW 11:22 - 11:46, the the color of the footage is very organic, its beautiful. We don't see many of this type of color footage any more. thank you for sharing.
Great to see you are in good health. Perhaps, the most popular voice of the RVN soldiers in Sai Gon was Phan Nhật Nam, an RVN writer. His most celebrated book was Mùa Hè Đỏ Lửa or A Summer in Inferno or Red Hot Summer refer to the war in 1972. I still remember a line in this book he wrote to this effect:: There were 2 kinds of people that strolled the streets in Pleiku after 8:00 PM: Soldiers & Prostitutes. " Pleiku sau 8 giờ tối ngoài đường chỉ có 2 loại người: Đĩ & Lính Another book by the same author is: The Hồi Ký Dọc Đường Số Một or The Highway One Journals. Be mindful that Phan Nhật Nam was an RVN Parachuter captain who was a fervent anti communist bloke in both capacities as a soldier as well as a writer. His books may not available in VN. I used to be a mega fan of Phan Nhat Nam in my pre teen pre 1975 when I was so ignorant. Nevertheless, I'd read twice if not thrice all of his books that published pre 75, There were a great VNmese poet Chế Lan Viên, who wrote about Phan Nhật Nam to this effect: "... In the south perhaps Phan Nhật Nam is one of the best. He wrote from his heart. Unfortunately, his heart was poisoned.. " Trong các nhà văn miền Nam, Phan Nhật Nam có lẽ la người có tài nhất. Nam viêt văn bằng máu. Tiếc thay máu đó bị nhiễm độc. I whole heartedly agree with Chế Lan Viên
seriously feel like i wasted decades of my life in aus during the 90s, 00s, cant help but feel that my life would have been more fulfilling if i had relocated elsewhere in place like vietnam etc, and maybe become a teacher or something similar,, guess i cant rewind time though at this point though unfortunately ;)
somehow, grief experienced externally, like a weather event, or like a certain light at a certain hour at a certain time of year - forward, a density part way between air and water - the mystery is its familiarity
