I have a 2002 Sienna with 570.000 miles, still original engine and transmission. I use Amsoil oil and change it every 10k miles. I should make a video about it someday. Love Toyota's and Lexus's.

Its not always a great thing to have to sell something like that especially to pay your rent or mortgage cause unless your really rich or retired you most likely throughout life will always have rent or mortgage but, you got to do what you got to do to survive this day and time.
Just saw this video. I have a 2002 Sienna which I have owned for approx 3 1/2 years and have put on virtually 10,000 trouble free miles. It now has a total of 282,000 miles and still going strong. Love it!
I drive a 02 sienna everyday for work in 19 states. Owned two.my first one the 99 was up to 576,089 miles before it got hit by a semi I’m Ohio. The second one is the 02 which has 327,021 on it currently no major issues. Sounds ok. Best engine I think is my 1993 Lexus sc300 the 2jzge 3.0 liter inline 6. Can’t beat it still runs excellent with 223.456. Needs some work been sitting awhile haven’t driven it consecutively in 2 years was my every day driver for 2-4 years I had it. Amazing cars. My boss had a 97 lexus es300 that he bought with 90k on it drove it with a bent frame until 765.000 miles plus than someone crashed it… it still would of kept goin
My 2003 Sienna has 225000 doesn't burn a drop of oil still has every horse it was born with. Oil changes every 5000 miles and routine maintenance. I'm 50 and this is the best vehicle I've ever owned.
Sold our Sienna with 230k miles to a buddy of mine at work who commutes to work daily. Engine and trans are perfect. No major issues. It was our first Toyota, which we bought with 130k miles, and it was a fantastic vehicle. Still is actually, as I see it every day at work. Wife wants an SUV, while I, oddly enough, am trying to talk her into another Sienna.
A few years ago I changed the engine on a 328,000 2000 Sienna. It went 25,000 miles on an oil and cooked itself. Van now has 410,000 on the original transmission and transmission fluid. Amazingly reliable vehicles.

My 2004 has 299,850 right now. Hoping to make it to 300K this week! Same scenario as the mechanic in this video... New oil every 5,000, Serpentine and water pump every 100,0000. Zero tranny fluid changes and no slipping. Oddly only parts of the exhaust gave out, no full replacement. Cat converter still original although I doubt there is much catalyst left. I wanted to replace the front struts but the mechanic told me they were ok. Unbelievable. Heater core original. Did have the radiator replaced when a neighbor backed into the front end. In fairness there was some weeping at the end caps. Plenty of tires and brakes, of course. And it was weeping some oil so I broke down and let the dealer do the valve cover gaskets (while they did the last water pump and serpentine belt.) Strange stuff... *Steering rack replacement at 140K * One of the gull wing window hinges let loose at 200K. * Remote door cables wer gone at 250 or so. * Door handles are intact though, unlike the video Still can't believe the gal with 600K though. Makes my head spin.
I am really impressed by what I've heard & hoping the legend of the endurance of these is true! By happenchance, I inherited a 2003 Sienna which I use for a newspaper delivery job with a dual full route. I have to drive really hard all night every night, 7 days a week, in order to deliver on time. Yet, I am changing the oil, monitoring the car's OBD2, treating it like a baby. At first, when my friend presented me the car, my response was "No way, it has 200,000 miles on it - it's already dead - the engine's going to blow literally any second now." After researching the vehicle, I was astounded to find not a few, but outrageously many witness accounts just like this video on the endurance and reliability of Toyota! 2 months later, my "LeMans van" still runs perfectly, shifts perfectly, doesn't leak, no engine damage noise, even though I am forced to drive 80% engine load & stop about 750 times per night. It's almost like these are.......actually indestructable
I got a kick out of your vid. I have a '98 LE Sienna. 257,000 miles and going strong. Runs as good as the day I bought it with 64k. Absolutely the most reliable car I've owned--and I've owned about 10. I can't believe the tranny hasn't failed by now with yours, given you've never changed the fluid. Mines never failed, but I have changed it 3 times. Door handles, yes a problem, but not a big deal. Easy enough and cheap to replace. Idiot lights staying on--yes, but no big deal either, just put black electrical tape over them! Slide doors not opening due to stretch on the cables and plastic parts--yes a problem--need to get that fixed. Both my sliding doors don't work properly. My instrument panel lights in the mid console don't work--where the air controls are, but that's not big deal. I go by "feel" at night. Radio knobs fractured and broke off a long time ago but I jerry-rigged some new ones. Radio still works. You're right about the seats. My front driver's seat is just fine. Other than that, yes--routine maintenance stuff. I took out all the back seats and use her like a truck, and pull 2 lightweight trailers all the time. I also have an '04 Sienna XLE with 170K. It's mechanically reliable enough, but over-engineered and not as nimble as my '98. The cruise control went out at about 120K, and to get it fixed would cost me $800. Didn't do it. I prefer the 1st generation Siennas.
Well I have a 2005 Toyota Sienna that is shy of 200,000 miles, we bought it with 98.000 miles and it's been to St.Louis 5 times and Texas 3 times, I've changed the oil and filter every 3,000 miles and this is by far the absolute best mini van I've owned. It has never left me stranded at any time, I can say this, if I could afford a brand new vehicle it would be a new sienna XLE with all the bells and whistles. I've done the brakes twice, I buy ceramic. And new tires twice, I buy the best. And there is no rust anywhere, And I live in Wisconsin, state of salted streets in the winter. I would like to tell Toyota what a proud owner I am of one the finest mini vans ever made. sure there has been recalls on minor things, but Toyota has stood by them all with some of the best mechanics. Thank you Toyota for a great product.
I have just reached 215,000 miles on my 98 Sienna and it has no problems. Everything works. Not to mention it looks brand new. 90s/early 2000s Toyota are literally indestructable.
My wife's 05 had 356k when we traded it. Same thing, Oil changes, Timing belt, and it kept on going like a new one. We loved it so much we ended up buying an 06 Sienna with 130k (not even broken in) for a third vehicle. Love em
My 2001 Toyota Sienna has 263,000 and still running strong. Never changed the transmission fluid. No major issues. Just replaced tires, brakes, muffler and that's it. Just keeps running. I'd buy another one for sure.
I bought a Toyota Sienna new in2000 and drove it for 394,000 miles with only one repair-a defective part. It was still purring like a kitten when I traded it in on a 2015 Sienna AWD. I was going to retire in about a year and thought it was time for this little old lady to have one more new car. I am devoted to Toyota and will never buy another brand of car! I must say, however, the new Sienna is larger and I'm not as happy with it as I was with my original Sienna. We've named the new Sienna "The Beast" because nobody can seem to park it straight in a parking space. The only way I know I am straight and equidistant from the other cars on either is to use the back-up camera. It's a lifesaver!

I recently moved to San Diego from San Francisco. Southern CA is a car dependent region unlike back home where everyone takes the train. So I bought a 2001 Toyota Camry because people told me Toyota was the way to go. Let me tell you, I'm really happy with my purchase. I got it for 2,900. The car was in perfect working order when I bought it. I like my cars to run like new though so I put $3,000 of work into preventative care into it and is has been a gem. It had a slight oil leak, needed new breaks, needed new power window motors, motor mounts, and a tune up. It's been great. The stock Dolby Digital sound system is of great quality. Im a teacher and it blends in at the school parking lot. It's a smooth quiet ride and everything is amazing on it. I usually only bought Hondas but after this car, I dont think I'll ever go back.
This is what I've got. 2002 sienna. I replaced the front valve cover gasket, now I need to do the back, but it's a bear to get to. Replaced three door handles. Shimmed the front door. Added a ziptie to the passenger door. Front left headlight turns on and off. Need to clean the throttle body/iac. It's got its idiosyncrasies, but man is it a great van to let the kiddos loose in. If it dies, I'd definitely look for another one.
A friend of mine had a 1995 toyota avalon with the 3.0 v6. It was all original and has 400,000 miles and sounded like it was brand new! now the exterior was rough it had clear coat fade bad but the interior was mint as well!
I have an ‘06 highlander with the 3.3 V6L engine AWD and it has 162,000 miles and it drives like a new car. The engine is so smooth you don’t feel any vibration on the steering wheel or any weird noises. Oil changes every 5k miles with full synthetic oil. I’m on my second set of brakes, third set of tires, and i changes the struts last year and the water pump and timing belt at around 120k miles. Once I hit 200k I plan on doing a tuneup. We are the second owners. I bought the car with 30,000 miles and it has been the best car. My three kids have grownup in this truck. I’m planning on keeping it until it dies and it can’t be repair. It will be replaced with another Highlander.
Mine has 285,000 and runs like a dream. It idles so smoothly, I have to check the tachometer to make sure. Taking it to Oregon soon, from SoCal. She's my baby...
I used to have a 1986 Oldsmobile with 2.5L engine ( if I remember correctly). It had over 290,000 miles when I sold it. Original engine and transmission. No problems. It ran great and hardly used any oil. All original parts except routine maintenance and one water pump. I also replaced the alternator as a preventative maintenance. My 1998 Jeep GC is still running like new, with lots on miles on it. It used to tow a 2 ton travel trailer a lot. Very tough and reliable vehicle. Very capable, off road 4x4 system. I replaced a water pump once and the radiator. Radiator was accidentally damaged and developed a small leak. I bought it new and did all the maintenance myself. Valvoline engine oil was used until 40k. Amsoil synthetic since then. I currently use Amsoil lubricants in all of my vehicles. Great oil! Worst car I ever had was a 2004 Honda Accord, with a 3.0 V6. I bought it new. Brake rotors were getting warped at 5,000 miles, transmission problems, poor engine start (long crank time), rattles everywhere in the interior, weird wheel alignment issues. Sold that POS after a year. I'll never buy another Honda car again.
My current ride is the 2005 Toyota with all major parts still original after 318 K miles. Toyota 3.3L engine runs smoothly & flawlessly even after 318K miles. Upholstery, shock absorbers, struts, iced cold AC, electric windows, fuel pump, paint are still original.
Gotcha beat... my 2002 sienna LE currently has 390,000. Still running well. Replaced a few things like wheel berrings, ignition coils, new radiator. But really most everything else is original other than general maintenance ie tires, oil, breaks, wipers etc Great van. Will see how long she lasts.
I have a '94 Toyota T100 Pickup. A ton of people have told me that it will go 300,000 miles easily because it has the 22RE engine. The engine, despite weighing a ton for 2.4L inline-4 and only making a gutless 130 HP, it is the most bullet proof engine I've ever had. When I got the truck, it overheated constantly, and the #4 spark plug hole was stripped. This happened because the owner before me neglected to repair the car for months. I repaired the engine and I still can't believe it went though all that punishment and it runs like it just came off the assembly line. Toyota definitely did their homework on the 22RE engines. The truck only has 155,000 miles on it, which is nothing for that truck.
Just turned 201K on a 2002 Sienna and it runs awesome. I agree with everything you say. I am a freak about my maintenance and probably have replaced some things a little early. I have to confess that my transmission fluid is also original, getting ready to change along with filter. I do the work myself. I was first at church to own this generation, now three others went out and bought theirs in the last 2 years. I have the most miles on mine. This thing is a BEAST!

Changing the oil every 5000 miles and the timing belt and water pump every 100,000 miles are key critical maintenance items that are the basis for your outstanding trouble free driving.
About to hit 195k on my 2002 Sienna that I purchased brand new. Changed spark plugs at 100k, regular synthetic oil changes at 10k, two timing belt changes as recommended, and replaced front valve cover gasket. Also did transmission oil twice. Vehicle is still running strong.
Ive done the same on my 2004. I had to replace harmonic balancer. Also glide pins on front rotors were not greased and cracked my pads from over heating, replaced front rotors because of it (Heat build up). check the pcv valve it gums up at 200k.
I concur!!! I have a 2003 Sienna [same engine], 233,000 miles & drive it like a LeMans car 7 nights a week full throttle non-stop constantly but with a 3k RPM personal redline limit [I deliver the newspaper, very hard to make a wage these days with the internet, so gotta bust it!] and same here - zero engine / transmission repairs, ticks like a Swiss watch from the 1700s. Some things have broke, but NOT anything to do with the drivetrain :) I've literally torn the wheels off of the car - as in breaking most of the front studs that hold the wheels on, finding myself with 20+° camber at the gas station and having to get towed. The suspension also completely went out by this point, and I had to replace both rear bearing hubs [hilariously easy to do] but the power/drive train on these are rock solid. Not mentioning the obvious stuff, of course, like stupid belts & batteries that have to be replaced regularly by default, just like tires or gas :p
My 2007 Sienna has 265,000 miles on it so far. The water pump did go out at 130,000, when I also changed the serpentine drive belt. No timing chain or belt though--it has interlocking sprockets instead.
We've had 2 1MZ-FE's. Currently have a leftover 2001 Sienna 1MZ-FE with 250k miles. And a 2000 Camry 1MZ-FE with 180k miles that was severely abused but never had engine or trans issues. But the body started rusting so we got rid of it.
I have the 3.0 Toyota Alphard now in 340.000 kilometers has no problem.. Just the power back door and the dirt leather seat... Much love with Toyota's...
+Akbar Putra W He's assuming you are Canadian as you gave the vehicle mileage in kilometers. It would probably come as a surprise to him to learn there are other countries where km's are used other than Canada.
Our 1999 Chevrolet Venture LS has barely had anything done on it and drives on all-season tires in crazy winters, and it's only started having some issues this year. Had a water pump or whatever it was problem and a few other little things, but she still runs great, besides some lights inside dying and the power windows getting shitty.
Our family had a 2000 Sienna. Unfortunately, we sold it with 170k miles. Should have kept it for much longer, it ran very nicely and was perfectly reliable. Our 2000 RX300 has 210k miles and still runs great. This 1MZ V6 is an awesome engine, buttery smooth, and seemingly indestructible with proper maintenance.
The 1MZ-FE. That engine is also found in that era Camry's and Lexus ES300's. They are very good. The GM 3800-II was also a fantastic engine back then. And this is coming from a Ford guy.
A while back we had a 1994 Toyota Camry(owned for 13 years) with the 1mz-fe v6 with 350,000 miles. Even with exhaust leaks, check engine light on for 10 years that engine ran great. The transmission fluid was never changed so my dad flushed it at 180k and at 181k it failed so we rebuilt it. I warned him not to do that but he did it.
PeterGriffin4200 yeah never flush the fluids with that many miles on it because you wash the crud out and that crud is maintaining the pressures in the transmission because seals have warn.
We still have our 2005 sienna at 180k miles. No issues except for alternator replaced, routine pads and oil changes. My 60k mile BMW 550i sits in a puddle of oil, although I've already replaced every seal on it known to man. Completely different worlds between Toyota quality and the rest. Every future car/truck/van we buy will be toyota.
I've got a '98 with 281K, still going strong. Nuisances: door handles broken, sliding doors stop working, radio knobs/buttons broke, oil leakage, hood lever prop broken, running boards rusted out completely. That being said, still the best vehicle I've ever owned. Most cars would be in the graveyard by now.
I have a 2007 sienna with 160,000. In addition to what he mentioned the thing that amazes me about the 3.5 L engine is that it runs incredible clean. I change the oil every 10,000 miles and when I check it after 10,000 miles the oil is still clean. Other cars I owned the oil was black after 2000 miles.
The engine itself is pretty overbuilt for the time. Closed deck aluminum block (resists heat/vibration induced headgasket failure), 6 bolt mains (good for high compression or turbocharging, and reduced NVH), and very large bore spacing. The thing holding back the 1MZ's is the old knock suppression system which uses a resonant type knock sensor that was replaced with a non-resonant type piezoelectric knock sensor that was considerably more accurate at detecting knock which is why the 3MZ's gained so much power with a modest 0.3 L increase in volume.
I had a 1996 Toyota Avalon 3 liter v6 had 425,000 on when I sold it apart from timing belts water pumps oil tires a starter and a rear brake caliper original engine and transmission. sound just like that van. Best car I ever had.
My fathers 06 corolla has well over 500k on it.. Just 1 alternator and 1 water pump outside of regular maintenance. 15k-20k oil changes. no transmission services.... too bad the one part that quit working was the damn ODO. that was about 6 years ago My 01 tacoma has just shy of 300k once again, little has been done. I pulled that engine apart because of the boost it will be seeing. After all those miles theres still crosshatching marks in the cylinders and very little carbon build up.. Kinda felt bad taking it apart, but it goes to show you that Toyota knows how to make a good engine.
It seems like it's all hit or miss with any manufacturer. Some fords are junk, some are not ... some toyotas are junk, some are not. It just depends on the model and the model year.
I agree with you that these 3.0L was a great engine since I have one myself (99 Avalon) with over 300k original miles to the engine. The only things I think that these engines are prone to were the motor mounts, that pesky valve cover gaskets, and the engine sludge issue. Not sure if it will last for 400k miles as I personally never seen one and my engine is starting to show wear as it loses 2-3 quarts every oil change. Thanks for sharing.
My parents had a 99 until 2012. The transmission went out at 180,000 miles. It was reliable but it went through ignition coils often, it used oil and the CEL was always on for something. My uncle has one with 300,000 miles. 2nd engine, original transmission.
I guess you would have liked to see my uncles 340,000 mile 2001 Chevy z71 truck everything had been replaced except for the engine and it still sounded brand new.
my 2004 230k Sienna runs great. Drain and fill xmission first time at 170k. did again at 230k . doesnt burn oil and after 5k miles oil is fairly clean. Note recent timing belt and water pump at dealer cost $2400. Thats 2x from 10 years ago. No wheel bearing yet, I did DIY , harmonic balancer, valve cover gaskets, plugs, coils, PCV valve at 230k. Its a daily driver
We have a 2000 sienna CE much like this one with the V6. It's hilarious, it's got nearly all the same issues this van has, down to the broken handle, missing hubcap, leaking valve cover (you can smell burning oil after driving it for long periods, it's leaking onto the exhaust manifold) and broken rear wiper. It has 150K miles and my dad plans on running it into the ground until it breaks so he has an excuse to get a new car. Looks like he'll be holding on to it for another 15 years!
I just bought a Sienna XLE Limited AWD with the 3.3 v6. I have been told the 3.3 is basically an enlarged 3.0. It has 153000 mile on it and I can't even hear it idle. I'm amazed for being 14 years old every single feature works like it should.
Got a 99 sienna with 238950 miles on it runs like a champ. Original everything besides the battery and alternator. Those 1MZ-FE engines are incredibly resilient. Just add oil and boom youre good to go!
Engines can last quite a long time as long as you do preventative maintenance on it through the manufacturer provided instructions! I used to have a 1998 Mazda B2500 with 289K miles on it, and that little 2.0L I4 purred like a kitten. That truck had no leaks, started up without hesitation and the simple things were done to it to keep it puttin' along!
My 2005 sienna with 275k miles is still going strong. Bought it new and been using mobil 1 since the first oil change. Hope it would last me 5 more years before I would go for an EV SUV.
We have 2005 chrysler town and country 270000 with the 3.3 liter and the van is still going strong! Original engine and trans. We have done a radiator and water pump as well as tie rod ends, needs a lower ball joint to but bearings are still good.
I had an 2003 rx300 same engine still going 450k miles only the transmission had to be rebuilt around 300k still runs like new no tears in the interior because we were really careful.
Just a suggestion it looks like it’s time to clean the corrosion off the battery. Getting 300,000 relatively trouble free miles is truly impressive. It seems they had more problems with the 3.3 and 3.5 engines. Thanks for posting.
Had a 97 ST204 celica with 287k's on it. Only did the usual oil change, plugs, timing belt and seals on the engine. Suspension and wheel bearings had some problems given the mileage it already had but it ran good.
That is a Toyota for you, I have a 86 pickup with a 22r that has 349,000 miles on the original engine. I went trough the engine when got it, and it still had the crosshatches in the bore and it has never been rebuilt.
2001 Sienna XLE has 298,000. Factory recall of auto trans by toyota at about 60K, so the trans only has 238K on it. Toyota replaced he ECU at 98K on the extended warranty. Replaced both front strut towers mounts from rust at about 250K (the driver side rusted out and the rod punctured the brake fluid reservoir), and replacement of all 5 outdoor handles (you CAN find an aftermarket, all metal rear latch that is excellent). Replaced the front speakers, but the JBL audio still rocks along. It has he only working VCR we own in the entertainment center. The station preset buttons have the paint mostly worn off them. Just replaced the rear brake shoes as they finally wore out, but did not have to turn the drums. I will need to replace a front half shaft as I noticed a torn boot when I did my last oil change. Have replace the A/F ratio sensor. AC still blows COLD and everything works. probably should buy new headlights as the originals are cloudy. Factory aluminum wheels are getting a little rough as the clear coat is wearing off. The factory running boards rotten off 6 years ago, but it looks fine with them removed. Love this van. Son #2 now drives it for High School after son #1 did that for 4 years. it is still solid.
