To learn more about popular hunting calibers like the 300 Blackout, .223 Remington, 5.56x45mm NATO, and .308 Winchester visit: huntingguns101.com/optin16151...
In this video I talk about how the 300 AAC Blackout, .223 Remington, 5.56x45mm NATO, and .308 Winchester compare to each other.
I think most shooters and hunters, but especially those who like using Modern Sporting Rifles, probably agree that the 5.56x45mm NATO, the .300 Blackout, and the .308 Winchester are all effective cartridges in certain situations. However, even though there is a small overlap in their capabilities, there are a some major differences between the 300 Blackout vs 5.56 vs s 308 Winchester that you should be aware of.
Indeed, the cartridges represent three distinct ways of thinking: smaller, lighter, and faster for the .223/5.56 vs bigger, heavier, and slower for the .308 vs a middle of the road compromise with the .300 Blackout. This is part of the reason why those cartridges have dedicated followings and why there seems to be so many misunderstandings concerning their capabilities. Not surprisingly, the 300 Blackout vs 5.56 vs 308 Winchester debate can be really difficult to navigate.
So in this video, I'm going to do a detailed comparison of the 223/5.56 vs 300 Blackout vs 308 Winchester in order to provide some recommendations on which cartridge you should be using in various situations.

I'm so glad I watched this video because I had no idea that the 300 blackout bullet was a 308 bullet simply stuffed into a smaller casing. I learned something new today!

I have studied this debate and have come to a conclusion. The round that is best to use is the one you can afford. It's also the one that would be in most abundance, should we have a grid down situation. Therefore, my choice would be the 5.56 as best choice for a go-to round based solely on affordability and availability.
@commandericeman8588
@commandericeman8588 Год назад
I concur regarding having a .556 rifle in a grid down scenario, simply because most likely that's what everyone else will have. That would be my weapon of choice if I was going out with a group of men on some type of mission. But if it was just me alone I'd choose the 308 cartridge because of its knock down power and range. I'm building an AR10 Aero Precision 308 with a 16 inch barrel as my apocalypse rifle.

I hunted deer in the Adirondacks of NYS using the Ruger 44 magnum carbine with tubular magazine. It was a 125 yd. gun at best. It was a nice gun to carry in the woods up and down hills and sometimes rough terrain. Most hunting was on drives and still hunting where weight mattered. We did a lot of hiking. It would put a deer down in short order. However, the 44 ammo was heavy to carry extras and the tubular magazine was a pain to load and unload each day. The gas adjustment screw would also back out from recoil on occasion and cause a jam. Cost me at least one buck. I always hoped Ruger would add something like the 300 BLK to the Ruger carbine but with a removable magazine, 5 round for deer, 20 round for feral hogs and self defense.. Ruger's ranch rifle and updated 44 magnum were too heavy, clumsy to carry, and generally crap for deer hunting compared to the original 44 carbine. And I know few traditional deer hunters who would want to carry an AR for deer. But a Ruger 44 mag style Carbine in 300 blk I would buy.

Great comparison of these modern sporting rifle cartridges. I will say the last few years I have enjoyed playing with the 300AAC and the knockdown power on pigs is a little more comforting than a .223 without breaking the bank on ammo. I will say on magazines if using larger grain rounds as with the subsonic rounds they may mis feed in standard .223 mags. Although now I have 300 Blackout specific mags and also paint them to keep from any chance of getting mags or ammo mixed up with .223 loads. Keep up the great work cheers!

@@Thebiggamehuntingblog The only hunting I do with the 300 is for Hogs on the deer lease. Its my ranch gun that seems to find its way into the truck for any adventures out on the property. The primary load is 125gr HP that seems to consistently shoot around 2175 FPS. I did buy a box of actual hunting ammo last season but have never shot it yet. I do have a night optic that I am going to mount to try a little night hog adventure as they seem to making their way more and more onto the property.

Ruger's new lightweight 308 AR -- OUGHT to be a game changer,hands down. However this should be in addition to a 5.56 AR -- Due to the sheer proliferation and availability of that caliber-- NOW we'd have the best of both worlds

I took a very hard look at Ruger's SFAR but the fact that it had some critical proprietary parts especially the bolt carrier and all them extra holes so as to mitigate recoil .... I took a hard pass and went with Aero Precision M5 .308 with 16 inch barrel. Being lightweight was nice, but utterly useless in grid down scenario if the rifle breaks and I can’t find parts to repair it because it's so rare.

300 blackout is a very versatile round with subsonic and supersonic, the 308 is overkill for most situations, the 5.56 is a one trick pony.
@commandericeman8588
@commandericeman8588 Год назад
Overkill is exactly what I would want in a zombie apocalypse or long term civil unrest scenario. With ammunition being at a premium in such a scenario, I ain't got time to be shooting a motherfucka more than once. Lol This is why I like the 308 and 300 blackout. Because even if a person is wearing plate armor, they ain't gonna just shrug off a hit to the chest when they get hit with those bullets.
@kalidilerious
@kalidilerious 4 месяца назад
haha. 5.56 is one of the most versatile rounds out there. It's standard issue by the U.S military because it can do so many things and good from 4yds to 400yds. Also the 223/556 has more power (ft/lbs of energy) than .300 blackout.
@Thebiggamehuntingblog
@Thebiggamehuntingblog 4 месяца назад
Apples to apples (same bullet type to same bullet type and with the same barrel length), the 223/556 most certainly does NOT have more energy than the 300 Blackout. Comparing supersonic 223/556 ammo to subsonic 300 Blackout? Sure. Supersonic to supersonic? The 300 Blackout is absolutely more powerful, especially up close, which is the whole point of the 300 Blackout in the first place.
@Thebiggamehuntingblog
@Thebiggamehuntingblog 4 месяца назад
You make a good point, but this is a good example of the importance of an "apples to apples" comparison. Sounds like you're talking about a 5.56 load from Hornady shooting a 75gr Match bullet with a (relatively) high BC bullet from a 24" barrel and comparing it to a 110gr Barnes TAC-TX (which has a much lower BC) fired from a 16" barrel. The Barnes bullet is great for hunting, the Match bullet is not. Compare a Barnes 5.56 or 223 load to the 300 Blackout and you'll see that they fall short of the 300 here. Furthermore, if you shoot that 5.56 load in a 16" barrel like the 300 Blackout, then you'll lose probably 200+fps from the muzzle velocity relative to what's advertised. That will dramatically reduce the real world performance of that load. So like I said, I can certainly imagine isolated cases like this where the 5.56 is producing better ballistics than the 300 Blackout, but I stand by my assessment that, apples to apples, the 300 Blackout is more powerful than the 5.56. It's not as big of a gap between the 300 and 5.56/223 as is the case with other cartridges like the 6.5 Grendel vs 5.56/223, but it would generally be an accurate statement to say that the 300 Blackout is more powerful than the 223/556.

If you’re not gonna suppress it, then .300 is just a less capable .308. At that point just get 5.56 in 16 if you wanna save money on ammo or .308 if you want a real battle rifle.
@kalidilerious
@kalidilerious 4 месяца назад
definitely don't get 16 inch .300 BO. unless maybe for hunting and even for hunting you're committing yourself to less than 200yds. If you can handle a 16 inch barrel you might as well go with an AR10 (308). You have range up to 800yds with practice.

That's a good question. Lots of cartridges have weird names that don't necessarily match up to the exact size bullet they use. It's confusing and frustrating, but that's the way it goes sometimes. Among other cartridges, the 222 Remington (yes, 222) the 220 Swift, the 22-250 Remington, the 218 Bee, and the 219 Zipper all use .224" bullets.

@kalidilerious
@kalidilerious 4 месяца назад
@@jasonlopez4855 You're indeed mistaken buddy. 300 win mag slows down faster than 308. Federal's ballistic charts show after just 300 yds 308 has more velocity and ft/lbs energy (power) than 300 win mag. This is why the U.S military uses 308 for their sniping round. Also AR10's (308) are standard issue in the military.
@Thebiggamehuntingblog
@Thebiggamehuntingblog 4 месяца назад
Not sure where you're getting this info, but with the same bullets and same type of load, the 300 Win Mag will ALWAYS have more velocity and more kinetic energy than the 308. Sure, if you take a very high BC bullet from the 308 and compare it to the 300 Win Mag shooting a very low BC bullet the 308 will catch the 300 Win Mag. But with the same bullets and when comparing full power loads for both the 300 Win Mag will be flatter shooting, faster, and more powerful at all ranges. This is why certain US Military snipers like Chris Kyle preferred the 300 Win Mag over the 308.
