In this video I do some load development and a range trip with a Remington 700 in 300 WSM. I'm shooting the 210 gr Berger VLD and 175 gr Barnes LRX. I test velocity and accuracy. Hope you enjoy the video.
The 300 WSM... The modern gentleman's 30-06. This is the cartridge I think of when I think about the perfect balance of power, accuracy, drop, drift, recoil... Everything. It's the best at nothing... But near the top of everything. Absolutely love it
I used to think the wsm cartridges were dumb, but since the advent of medium length custom actions and my discovery of tikka actions, I'm starting to really like them. I bought a 270 wsm t3x lite in January, and I'm going to get a fast twist 270 wsm barrel for it, and probably a 300 wsm barrel as well. Converting my tikka over to long action will let me load the long, heavy 6.8 bullets into the wsm case at the optimal length to utilize the powder capacity advantage over the 6.8 western.
@wesleyturner1979 A 180 ttsx at 3150 out of a 300wsm has substantially more energy than a 180 ttsx at 2775 out of an 06. Almost 1000 pound feet at the muzzle to be precise. Velocity has a lot more effect than people realize. If you double bullet weight, you double the energy. If you double velocity, you quadruple the energy.
Winchester is so underrated. Yes their brass sucks, but their cartridge design the past 20 years or so has been the best in the world. 300 WSM and the 6.8 Western are phenomenal!
I bought an M70 Featherweight Stainless in 300 WSM 12 years ago and restocked it in a McMillan Edge. It’s the perfect rifle for me. Light, points like a shotgun, and accurate enough for my skill level. It’s taken three species of deer, two species of elk, and many pronghorn. 150gr TSXs at 3250 fps are wicked.
Great caliber - the 300WSM. Accurate, efficient, and very good performance. It's been hard to find brass and ammo the last several years. Glad to see Lapua is now making brass. WSM's were all the rage for a while after they came out then popularity seemed to decline. I hope the WSM's and the 6.8 Western make a strong comeback - they're all awesome hunting cartridges.
Yes 🙌🏻 a 300 WSM video. Definitely can appreciate the “original PRC”. lol 😆 I have had one since 2019 in a Savage M110 Long Range Hunter that I bought for $565 off of Bud’s Gunshop. I do like it even though it’s a right hand gun and my long time first ever gun in 270 Win is a lefty because I am a cross dominant shooter. The only other thing I don’t like is that I can’t take the brake off. Anyway that has nothing to do with the cartridge. Mine really likes the 185 Berger Hybrid Hunter, 180 GMX and 200 ELD-X. I sadly have done minimal reloading since I don’t have a hunt to really stretch its legs and just bought factory ammo. I do have some 180 gr Accubonds and 150 gr Barnes TTSX but I might sell the rifle but I can’t find a 300 WSM in lefty that is threaded outside of two other Savages and a CA. I have also thought about a 7 PRC, 7 RM, 280 AI, 300 WM or 300 WBY as its replacement.
Good video. Thank you this makes me want to get my 300 short magnum out and start playing with it. I basically have the same gun but it just has a laminated stock on it.
Excellent video!! It is allot of fun!! Yesterday I fire formed 20, 300 weatherby brass to 8mm Remington Mag. My first rifle with a muzzle break, couldn't believe how mild the recoil was! 150gr Speer hot core at 3150!!!
The Barnes LRX bullets are really good hunting bullets. However I have found that a percentage of them may have the plastic tips mounted crooked. Some batches more so than others. And some are obscenely crooked. So I have started sorting the bullets to isolate the bad ones, and I save those for foulers. If you want to shoot tight groups with the LRX you will want to cull the crooked tip bullets.
Well I hope I'm home in time to watch. I just shot my 300WSM today and I think I'm done testing until I get my McMillan stock and get it bedded. Currently shooting in the MDT chassis. Kept working up powder to find max pressure. Still not at max but at a good stopping point for now - ADG brass, 215M primer, B-O 2.4625, 210 BVLD 69.0 Re22 - forgot to turn on Garmin 69.2 - 2863.7 69.4 - 2856.6 69.6 - 2887.5 - still no pressure signs All 4 in a cluster 9/16" Also rocked one of the 280AI with 168 Berger VLDs at 2971fps longest seating depth. Then shot the 139 Barnes LRX with Superformance and Hunter. Superformance won - 63.0 grains, 3272fps. No pressure signs yet. Taking it back out tomorrow with 2 Tikka T3x 30-06s. Going to try 63.0 grains x3 with that 139LRX, then 63.2 grains x3. Norma brass, 210M primers. Right now just shooting both Tikka 30-06s to get more Winchester brass for loading
Good gosh that seems like alot of powder. Im getting slightly heavy bolt feel with 65.5 grains with normal brass with re22. Closer to 2830 fps 24” barrel 210 vld
@@orr89rocz Is your 300WSM a SAAMI spec chambered rifle? Mine is not. We are using my reamer design. I opened the chamber 0.002 larger than SAAMI spec and my bullets seat out such that I have to use a long action. My dummy round has a 210 Berger VLD seated to where the bullet shank/boat tail junction are just forward of the case neck/shoulder junction. In other words, my 300WSM loaded ammo looks just like 6.5 and 7PRC ammo. Thus, more powder fits. Currently using ADG brass but also have a ton of Norma brass on hand
@@derekmcmurry its been set up around a 210 vld with some additional freebore but im not entirely sure how much. I single feed since its a short action. ADG brass is strong but that just seemed hot to me.
@@orr89rocz Yea I've been pleasantly surprised. Not one sign of pressure yet. But the paper holes are tiny and perfect like we want to see them with the perfect circle-shaped black margins so the bullets are stable and like the current load
The wsm cartridges are awesome. I have owned a 300wsm and now own a 325 Wsm . Really great cartridges . Check out the 7mm wsm ! The prc might not like it. It’s capable of launching a 175 grain ablr at 2955 fps according to nosler
I do wish I kept my Weatherby vangaurd I had in 300wsm. Had it like 16 years ago. Came with a bell and Carlson fiberglass stock, and the barreled action was stainless. That’s one rifle I really wish I never sold back in the day.
Nice to see you are still working on the cheap 7mm PRC. Too bad it is with the light bullet you are doing best. I do believe it will do well with the 162 or 175 Hornady ELDX with the right powder and charge. Have fun!
I own many rifles in the classic tried and true calibers 22lr, 22wmr, 243win, 22-250rem, 270win, 30-30win. I ended up selling my 300win mag to step into something a little more “modern” and went with a 300wsm in a model 70 control round feed action. I put it in a bell and carolson sporter stock. Not even bedded and I got sub MOA groups with factory 180gr Remington loaded swift sirocco’s. IMO I find the 300wsm to be best well rounded cartridge for medium to big game anywhere in North America. Can’t wait to start reloading for it to unlock true potential! Cheers from Canada eh 🍻🇨🇦👍🏻
You gotta love those great Range days where all your guns and reloads shoot sub MOA. I can count more disappointment days at the Range than great days where everything shoots well!
Great video. My personal goal with my model 16 300wsm is to get 30-06 or slightly better performance from a 40”ish overall length rifle. We have a lot of thick foothills on the way to the main open elk spots, so looking for maneuverability while maintaining longer range ability. A sweet spot for sure with the wizzum. Recoil aside 😂
It's a wonderful cartridge! I would have loved to get one but the rifles available to me weren't chambered in it. I almost pulled the trigger over a year ago and ordered a Browning BLR in 300 WSM but ended up waiting and missed that chance.
The 300 wsm is a dandy of a cartridge. An old friend of mine had a Ruger m70 Coyote wsm and a custom rig built around the 300 wsm that tipped the scale at exactly 50 lbs. It was bad____. You've opened pandoras box on this one. Gd time's
I reload 300wsm for a Fraind and am now planning on getting one myself now I just love it I used AA hunter powder and Imr 4350 both held amazing groups both barns bullets hunter powder actually advertised on the container work well with 300wsm just sharing something I have found
Nice one mate. I've got a 300wsm built on a long action for long throated with 210 bergers i get 80fps more velocity than my 2 mates 300prcs with 212gr keep it up mate
Austin my 300wsm likes Superformance and Reloader 22 try these and mag pro and a big thumbs up on showing the true velocitys of hornady ammo in 7mm prc
I mark mine in the extractor groove and numbers low as possible as I could tell it was makin em sticky in dies….all I have is sonic cleaner and won’t take it off that good put I hand polish with brasso so…lol..wantin wet pin setup bad…I’ve got 6.5prc loads from 95s to 153s…👊🏻
How to improve Rem 300 WSM accuracy.... Lap the lugs😊. Easy to do. Remove the firing pin assembly from the bolt body. Apply lapping compound sparingly to rear of bolt lugs. Insert and cycle bolt up and down 100-200 times, using light rearward pressure. Clean out chamber with air and long swabs. In the past, with the 700s owned, lug lapping improved accuracy the most. Next was Timney trigger and crown touch-up. Surprisingly, custom stock, blueprinting, and bedding did little for accuracy. Keep in mind that this is on a factory gun.😊
The 300 WSM is great, but so is the 30 Nosler. But Nosler needs to open up rifle makers & ammunition producers....the 300 WSM should have a great future....
Well it looks like I almost nailed that PRC 7mm when I commented earlier this morning that you were shooting at 120 grain what I said would have been a firing ttsx on top of IMR 4350 and maybe I should have just left off the ttsx cuz I would have had it balls on with 120 grain on top of IMR 4350
270 WSM kinda fills a gap for me in .27 caliber. When it comes to .30 caliber, 300 PRC jump starts a two stage rocket downrange fast and accurate. I'm good.
@ReloadingWeatherby you don't have an old set of glass to put on it temporary? Man I'd be all gungho to shoot it, I don't think I could restrain myself, I'd at least be chronograph testing it. But I get it, it's an experience you don't want to lessen. Good glass will make it all that much better. I just know I wouldn't have the will power.
@ReloadingWeatherby shoot I wish I could,I haven't had any social media accounts for a few years now, other than this Google account and my rockslide forum and a few other forum accounts. 🤷♂️ Was a decision my wife and I made together. I wish youtube had a DM would love to see what you have.
I knew it would be a lighter grain bullet for the seven PRC. It really makes it pointless. I feel like a seven Remington Magnum would be a better choice over a seven PRC only favors a lighter grain bullet. I wonder if it would be worth it to put a custom 24 inch barrel to push heavier bullets?
@@WayStedYou he didn't just say they stole his idea,hr proved it with a patent number and a patent date, and the case description and measurements, and that's why Winchester, Browning have not had a problem with letting the best thing they ever had die a slow miserable death ,,,270 wsm, 7mm wsm ,300 WSM ,325 wsm ,,,and if that had not been the case when it first got ran the PRC would not even have been a twinkle in the Hornady eye,,,it's nothing new it's just PRC marketing and hype
You're to comfortable shooting overpressure. Extreme primer flow and a few ejector marks. To see it on one or two would be expected in a workup process but to see a case full. Prioritizing velocity over personal safety. What value does that 30 fps actually have to you?
@@ReloadingWeatherbyI have a guy that loads for me and I get 3200 with 180 gr bullets and I think if I’m not mistaken he loads 75-78 grains of powder but you can load up to 80 safely
@ReloadingWeatherby I'm not hating, glad you found a accurate load for your rifle. 120's are fine for deer. And mine is definitely close to max with hybrid 100v.
Lmao that 7prc load. Mossberg Rifles are notoriously unreliable. You either get a complete lemon or a decent shooter. The price is just too tempting sometimes though. My buddy and I each purchased a Mossberg MVP Scout in 7.62x51/.308. He is still trying to find a load that will work and the best he's be able to do is 2.8 MOA (can't remember what he achieved that with). Meanwhile mine is getting just under 1 MOA with factory 147gr FMJ M80 Ball lmao 🤷
@@ReloadingWeatherbyyes they do. Rifle stocks are built to recoil into a human body. Too not hurt the rifle you would have to remove the action and barrel from the stock and then somehow fit it into a lead sled.
