3000HP & 10,500RPM from a 4 cylinder billet block that weighs only 106kg, who doesn’t like the sound of that possibility! Oskar Elmgren from Elmer Racing [TECH TALKS] to us about their 4L Porsche 968 Billet Block product, aptly named Thor at the 2017 World Time Attack Challenge.
Oskar talks about some of the strength advantages billet products have over cast including thinner wall potential, tailor-made adjustments and of course lighter weights. Interestingly Elmer Racing also uses the stronger, uncastable 7075 alloy giving it almost twice the strength over the typically used 6061 or 6082 alloys.
Also covered are some of the careful design considerations that go into bolt locations and clamping areas using friction models which see a conventional MLS head gasket despite huge boost and output numbers. Of course, oil circulation and cooling along with crank strengths are also critical areas to cover, and as such Elmer also makes their own 968 crankshafts in-house to ensure reliability.

Usually factory cars have double the cylinder count compared to displacement, for the best emissions (example most 4 cylinders are 2.0L, 6 cylinders are 3.0, ) I guess if you don’t have to worry about emissions requirements, like in racing, you can do almost anything. Great interview by the way, the guy genuinely loves what he is talking about and it shows by how well he speaks about it and how knowledgeable he is about the engine 👍

@dj4monie
@dj4monie 6 лет назад
For the average enthusiast, you don't need a billet block you need better tuning and more experience behind the wheel of your combination before changing it. In Drag Racing lots can be gained from improving short time. Example the power has always been there to run single digits in almost every FWD or AWD compact car, the problem has been not the hardcore, but the average person who isn't hardcore but want the results of somebody that is singularly focused. Given 3000-3400 lbs of the average compact car you need between 500-600 hp to go really fast, low 10's, high 9's do you really need your car to go faster than that?

03:11 Originally this would have been a 3,0L engine, which at the time was the largest and most powerful production four cylinder engine. Porsches own rating of the engine was 240 hp and 305 Nm, whereas dynotesting suggests that these numbers were very conservative. With high-quality fuel, stock examples in good condition usually show figures closer to 260hp. Personally I've witnessed an otherwise completely stock example fitted with a custom exhaust make 278hp on the dyno.

@mattgraham4340
@mattgraham4340 5 лет назад
@mister clean Of course, I don't know how that's different from what I said. Having some tolerance does not imply that the tolerance is poor. What he was saying is that in some cases they don't know what the tolerance is, and therefore need to guess when reverse engineering the ideal dimension. If they measured 100 engine blocks with their CMM or whatever, then he might have enough data to determine the tolerance.
@stevenkelby2169
@stevenkelby2169 5 лет назад
@mister clean +/- 5 what? Bananas?
@mpetersen6
@mpetersen6 4 года назад
@mister clean It depends on the particular feature. It also depend if we are talking inch or metric. Let's say the bore is 100mm with an H7 tolerance. The H7 means 100.000 to 100.025 approximately*. That's a total of .0001". In a production environment that is doable. But then the location of a tapped hole might be ÷/- .1mm. That's an .008" tolerance band. The location of the oil cap in the valve cover could be +/- 1mm and it would not matter *I don't have my ISO tolerance book handy right now so I am probably off but not much. 200 H7 is 200.000t to 200.040

3000hp is pretty impressive number from a 244ci engine. I would be curious to know on what kind of fuel it would achieve this? I realize there are a plethora of variables. I'm impressed because, if you increased this engine to 500ci roughly twice the size (NHRA Top Fuel Displacement) it would produce 6,147hp. 6 bar is 87psi!! What fuel would work with that kind of boost pressure? Timing is a HUGE issue how does it work....lol. Thanks. I'm a fan of all things Horsepower😊

For a drag application at the target of 3000 hp we would assume someone would be most likely running on methanol fuel. Methanol has a very high octane rating and a high latent heat of evaporation which means it also has a large cooling effect on the charge temperature.

hey you can make the rods from really nice steel alloy skeleton rod, plug the ends and cast them in the billet material then cut and pull the plugs, separate them and machine them out , then they won't stretch, or just use titanium.

The guy doing the interview looks like he has no idea wtf Oskar is talking about half the time lol. These guys are like 5 steps ahead of the normal tuner and its amazing. When he asked about cylinder head porting and Oskar was like nah thats not important its all about the pressure waves lol.

? the average tuner argue about sh*t that's not important to the grand scheme of things. Port Velocity and Pressure Waves are more important than CFM in many cases. Oskar rotated the head for packaging reasons as stated. When you don't drive the thing on the street anymore compromises take a back seat.

The guy doing the interview is probably the most knowledgeable engine builder and tuner in new Zealand. His name is Andre simon, he owned speed tech motorsport and at one time had the fastest 4cl 4wd evo in the world.. DOCILE. Look up his videos with his new business hp academy.
