Real life videos, real life problems and solutions. I have to admire the fact you do the job properly despite the hidden gems you uncover. Once done the owner will thank you for your fortitude even if their wallet is a little lighter!

Thanks for sharing this. Really interesting to watch and to see all the problems you’re finding - typical Land Rover. I’ve just finished a restoration on mine...4.5 years of part-time misery, interrupted by brief periods of joy and happiness - brief though :)

Thanks for update. Imagine all that sludge in the oil galleries resulting in restricted oil flow to the crank and cam. I wonder if it contributed to the failure and of course the questionable big end bearing shells. Would you change to hard to get at core plugs?
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 лет назад
I am going to pull the whole motor apart The mains were good and the oil passage feeds the big end so I am not 100% the passages are blocked, but I suspect bearings are not up to the job of high speed and overloaded vehicle

Hi Mike Great video. What could be causing the timing belt to be running forward like that (not on center on the pulleys)? Best regards Daniel
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 лет назад
It seems to be over tightened belts - the housing can bend I have found, and the pump twists towards the crank just a hair but enough to cause issues Mike

Great video - any tips on how to separate the engine from the gear box? Just lift a bit and use a pry bar?
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 лет назад
I lift the engine and box while bolted together and put a block under the gearbox crossmember drop it down a but and then undo the bell housing bolts Mike
@juliengamble9285
@juliengamble9285 5 лет назад
Ok gotcha, so just leave all the transmission stuff as is (keep proshafts on etc). How far up above the cross member do you lift it? @@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations

I lift until the bell housing almost touches the tunnel then put some blocks on the crossmember and lower back down

Hi really enjoying your videos. What do you reckon is the best engine for a 110 if you want to tow? Not heavy mind you, around 1000kg. Been wanting to buy one for years but until I saw this wasn’t confident enough to dive in. Thanks much appreciated

Difficult question to answer - I only see 300Tdi and older here in Canada as we are limited by a 15 year old import restrictionThere are a few Td5's that have had the computers re mapped to make more power but I have no experience of thisA V8 would have a lot of power but drink too much fuel!The 200 and 300 Tdi's had the same power and torque, but the 200's are getting a bit old now and some spares are discontinued and the LT77s was not the strongest of gearboxesI would not buy a 2.5 diesel non turbo or the later TD/DT - they were a lot of troubleSorry I cannot be of much more assistanceMike

Is it a disco engine with no lifting eyes? All the 300 discos I’ve seen had no lifting eyes but my defenders all have them.

What makes of bearings would you get and where would you get them. Cheers
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 лет назад
Britpart sell Glyco bearings which are under the Federal Mogul / AE brand which is OEM - you just have to stick a G on the end of any part number to get the OEM stuff Miss off the G and you will end up with King bearings (never heard of them) made in Israel and the wholesale price is £7.50 - Glycol are £20 BUT if you want to push the boat out and get genuine parts they are £85! Open the box - AE bearings! I filmed a rant about this over the weekend but not sure if I should post it! Mike

Oh hang Mike, I lost that reply you sent me just now about the Defender not wanting to reverse. I think you said something about the 5th gear. Please resend your reply if it is convenient. Sincere thanks, Garth Richert.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 лет назад
So it is common for the layshaft to snap as it enters the extension housing - usually you have no 5th or reverseThere is no noise or grinding If you have no 5th then it must be brokeMike
@garthrichert5256
@garthrichert5256 5 лет назад
@@BritannicaRestorations Thank you Mike. The 5th gear works fine. Do you think it may be something to do with the reverse idler gear? Really appreciate your kindness in replying to my odd things. Go well. Garth
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 лет назад
Could be - but in the last 15 years of building boxes I have not had to replace that gear - the reverse chews the syncro, and maybe in an extreme case, the syncro teeth are shot ir the baulk ring is brokeLooks like box out time!Mike

Oil is oil. This guy just been running that oil way past maintenance requirements till it sludged up. My 300tdi has 520.000km on it and I use cheap 10w40 from a budget store, I just change oil every 3-5000km. Expensive oils might behave better at higher intervals, but even the most expensive oil will turn into caramel when its it burnt up in the engine.

another engine that has not been maintained properly. clowns should read maintance books and use correct oil. land rovers are not cheap to run.so have a good bank balance before you buy one
@harveysmith100
@harveysmith100 5 лет назад
If you keep putting cheap Chinese parts in your Land Rover, eventually you won't have a Land Rover, you will have a cheap Chinese 4X4. Hands up anyone who would buy a cheap Chinese 4X4? No? Well stop turning yours into one.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 лет назад
I understand Harvey, but in many cases that is the only choice we have as LR have discontinued many parts and those that are available from LR are often 10x the price I think I have covered this a few time on this channel - if LR supplied reasonably priced original parts the we would indeed fit them - Toyota have this totally spot on - lots of unofficial retailers selling genuine parts
@harveysmith100
@harveysmith100 5 лет назад
@@BritannicaRestorations I stand corrected! I do have a bit of a rant regarding Chinese parts on a regular basis! Shame on LR, they really should be looking after those who look after their reputation. I am lucky with my LandCruiser, as you said, lots of places stocking Genuine parts which helps me keep a very old girl on the road.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 лет назад
I cannot understand LR - they had a world wide market and distribution chain and then priced themselves out of the market On the other hand if they made their part better in the first place, then there would be no need for aftermarket parts! Catch 22 Mike
