East Yorkshire, the most beautiful place in the world 😁 I am slightly biased, but very happy you're enjoying it. Onwards to Cawood and Selby, although much more beautiful from the land, both very nice places. Naburn lock after that. The pub and moorings at The Swan at Acaster Malbis, by the locks, are lovely. I recommend the fish and chips 👍

It’s a shame they can’t find some way to harvest and use all those weeds from the canal. You mentioned earlier a boat clearing them but are they put to any use? Animal feed? Fertiliser? Biofuel?
@MinimalList
@MinimalList 4 года назад
Apparently they try and get farmers to pick up the extracted algae and weed to till back into the soil, as it’s a perfectly viable source of nitrogen and other nutrients. Some is also redirected to compost. It could in theory also be burned as biomass fuel, though it would need to dry considerably first. M

Is it my imagination, or is the water in that canal uncommonly clear? I wonder if it is all those weeds and the little traffic that keeps it that way. I suppose if you are to fall in a waterway, the Pocklington is preferable to most. Incidentally, Michael's concern over bridge number reminds me of a friend from West London, who becomes apoplectic with rage at the mention of Three Bridges, near Hanwell. There, Windmill lane crosses the Grand Union Canal which, in turn, crosses the railway line to Brentford, so there are three levels. His barely controlled rage is that this makes two, not three, bridges and it takes several hours and a pint or two for him to return to some semblance of normality.

Another lovely vlog. Thanks. How tight were the Pocklington locks? Nicholson says they're 56'9" by 14' so it's possible that our 60' narrowboat would go in on the diagonal. Those walkways on the inside of the bottom gates don't bode well though.

I hadn't thought much about canals and rivers in this part of the world before, I'm glad I watched this as the Pocklington Canal looks really special, however, it is probably the lack of mooring that puts people off? I had a look at the Derwent and it was meant to be closed to boats in 1938 but I've counted 16 boats moored up at Elvington, most seem to be of GRP manufacture so obviously built recently! The Yorkshire Air Museum is at Elvington so its a shame you can't get to it by the river. I suspect it is probably local landowners who are obstructing passage to boaters.
