Louisiana has quite a bit of the peanut butter colored stone in red clay gravel pits. You see it a lot in LaSalle, Catahoula, and Grant parishes where it is going to be your primary knapping material.

I'm actually getting ready to fire a collection of some right now. Just getting back into knapping after several years.

@@KnapperJackCrafty any tips or experience on firing times and heats with this? I'll be firing in a sand pit today and overnight with a mixed batch of cobbles but I'm looking for a turkey cooker. The woman of the house won't let me use the oven overnight!

I think you're right for Missouri because we have a lot of that yellow clay here that stains everything that color

Uhm.. I also hoped it was that honey color inside :P Btw, the original one is REALLY a fine piece of art work. The crossection all along the piece seems very consistent. It looks amazing when you show the side view of the point. Great vid again, Patrick. (all 3 parts)

Was this technique of indirect percussion, using an Ishi stick or similar tool, known to Neolithic man in Europe, or is this a newer technique discovered in North America? Thanks, Jim
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty Год назад
Nobody knows. We have found knapping tools that could have been used this way (long tines and beams) but no direct evidence.

The indirect percussion stick just shows up in the in the tutorial, your not showing how to use it ,is it under your armpit?im just seeing the aftermath of your strike, i have no idea where your holding the back of the stick?i saw one guy tie it to his leg ? if you back up the camera a few feet we can see how to use one thanks,

Jack, how do you light the area you do your knapping in ? At age 75 my eyes are not the best.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 3 года назад
I use those clamp-on shop lights. I either clamp one to tripod next to me or hang them from the ceiling over my work area.
@cutbaitkenny

How are you holding the tool in place that you strike when you place it on the platform?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 8 лет назад
I hold it behind my knee with a "knee grip". Go back into my older videos and look at video 244.

I watch people using there ishi sticks but never really see how there holding or bracing them I have one and still struggle with mine. could you make a vidio of how to use an Ishi stick?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 7 лет назад
Yeah, I can do a video on it. Sometimes people ask me about Ishi sticks. I don't use one in the conventional sense except for notching sometimes. When I first started attending knap-ins, I was taught to use Ishi stick pressure flakers and a boppers like everyone else.
@KnapperJackCrafty

Hey, I posted a new vid on Ishi sticks. I will probably do another one soon after I practice.

Hey AH, have you ever thought about making a bunch of "functional" arrows and testing them out to see how they would've fared against big game? Because I have seen many examples from europe and arrows were more often than not just simple flakes shaped to a point. And they were apparently stupidly effective, but it never hurts to test some homemade ones out.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 9 лет назад
mojototal Yeah, I've thought about doing some tests on big game animals but I don't have any in my back yard. (heheh) When I'm rich I'll do those tests. In the meantime, I will do some tests on 1/2" plywood. I've already shot some test arrows at plywood and I think everyone will be surprised and enjoy the test results. Watch for upcoming videos... :-)

What diameter is your copper rod and do you twist it in a drill and vice?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 7 лет назад
I'm not sure of the diameters of the grounding wires (small diameter) but they are #6 and #8 wires at the hardware store. The larger diameter rods are 1/4" and 3/8". And, no, I don't twist them or harden them in any way.

I am just getting in to flint knapping and watching all the youtube videos I can. It is hard to find flint that is any good laying around. I am from the Southwest Missouri area where we had massive flint piles from lead mining in the past but the E.P.A. is cleaning up all those areas. I have walked creek banks looking for flint also but almost all of it has freeze cracks. I am just trying to learn how to spall with success and hate to do it on better grade of rock that I would purchase. Thank you for the videos.

I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of knappers in MO. Try looking online for a knap-in. You'll find plenty of flint ( some free) at knap-ins.
