I've not seen this video until now. I really like the close up view on this. Makes it easier to see the angles you hold the rock as you strike.

Ah yes, one of the oldies. I'm glad these old vids are still useful.

Absolutely amazing! I'm pretty new so I'm going thru the VAST catalog of expert nappers, and I gotta say this one has really resonated with me. Yeah, I can work spalls I ordered from guys online down to "decently" thin performs, but I cant afford to use that stuff to practice and experiment. Where I live in north central Indiana there is virtually no high quality native stone, and what I can find often can only be spalled into peices that look EXACTLY LIKE the piece you started with in this video. I have been pounding my head on the wall trying to figure out how to thin these things down without ending up with a friggin bird point after 2 hours of reduction! I definitely need to expand my skillset to include indirect percussion, I have only used it so far to get tiny little platforms that are unreachable with my billets. The big thing I learned here tho was the diagonal technique. I would never have figured that out on my own. Thank you Mr. Crafty! You have convinced me to hit that sub button- something only 3 others have managed to do.

Thank you for sharing your considerable knowledge and experience. I have never knapped but I want to try so I'm just watching right now. Amazing one would never think that a clunky stone can be made into a good looking tool in such a short time those stone age flakers were awesome.

I like watching your videos over and over. It's like, I learn something new every time I watch you. I'm trying to learn how to send a fluke half way up on both sides. & how do I notch with no tools when I'm in the woods empty handed? Oh BTW I changed my cover pucture.

If you are in the woods empty handed, you will need to walk around a lot to find an antler shed, and then find a sharp rock to saw the antler into pieces. Then you can grind the antler on any old rock to form the shape of the tips of the antler tools.

I am a beginner, your vids are fun and easy to follow. I have made a few passable points but mostly just testing and practice. I like to leave points for people to find near my flake spoils.

+Wades blades Hi Wade. Send me an email to jackcrafty@yahoo.com so I won't forget to answer this question. I usually don't sell knapping tools so I'll have to figure out the cost. I think the last time I sold a flaker it was 10 bucks..

What are you hitting the tool with? Is it hinged with a striker?
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 7 лет назад
Look at some of my newer videos with a zoomed-out view. There are no hinges in my tools. :-)

Can you find that stone around areas with a lot of dolomite? It looks sort of familiar, like I might have seen some around here.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 9 лет назад
John Ratko Yes, I suppose it's possible. This stone is found in surface outcrops of chert in West TX.

Allergic Hobbit Guess I should have picked some during one of my many travels through West Tex. Going to be looking for it next time.

Use a deer antler??? For micro flaking! Hammer stone for reducing.

I've made hundreds of videos. Several of them actually have deer antler and hammerstones. See my other channel for the latest (Allergic Hobbit)

@@KnapperJackCrafty I'm old school. The copper shit makes me angry. Sure make copper in a camp fire. Don't use it to knap.
@Nubenhoofer

Just curious D T, what about copper makes you angry? Have you used it and hate the way it feels or the results it yields? Or do you feel the use of it lowers the merit of the art all together? Is it an insult to history? To native heritage? Honest, not trying to start sh*t, I am genuinely curious.

You’re great grandad x30 would probably give you a knuckle slap if he heard you were trying to make stone blades without using the best material available for your tools. In our age that is copper, aluminum, steel, antler/bone, rock. Use them all
