This is a video shot from the official bus tour through the AMARG facility at Tucson, AZ. The bus tour can be booked, on a first-come, first-served basis, at the Pima Air and Space Museum ticket desk and it's worth going early as the tour regularly sells out.

Thank You for this video.... I am an 80 year old Air Force Vet. Lots of memories here, some good and some bad. Kinda like going through a cemetery with all graves being relatives....!

I grew up around the boneyard in Tucson, Arizona and to watch this brings back a lot of memories and I miss home dearly. As I wipe a tear from my eye and just smile and remember what it was like. Take the tour, ( I highly recommend it) see my beloved Tucson, and you will always remember it forever. Haven't been home since 89. Tucson lives in my heart and will ALWAYS be a special place to me!!! I miss home........

I grew up in Tucson. Dad was stationed at DM and after he retired, we lived virtually across the street, across Golf Links near Wilmot. When we lived on the base and across the street in the 1960s, there were WWII aircraft there, early large cargo planes like the C-124 which sat near the corner of Golf Links & Wilmot behind a simple, mostly broken down crappy barbed wire fence and the APs drive around the perimeter all day and all night. Everything south and east of GL & Wilmot was open desert. I hear they have run craycroft and wilmot tgrough the base now. I looked on a map today and see that the housing area we lived in back then has been plowed under and no longer exists and the elementary school is also gone. Bummer. I attended that school, Lowell Smith, for my first 2 years. Just memories now. I won't relaye the sad story about the house. Perhaps the memory is best gone with the house. Great video! I enjoyed calling out the aircraft models before you did! I'm an aviation nut! Got it from living on the base and attending every air show from 1960 to about 1970. Love them air planes!

Cool! I grew up partly on the base and then right across the street off of Golf Links and Wilmot. When we moved into our new house there, everything south and east of GL & Wilmot was just open desert. My brother was out there one Saturday hunting for rattlesnakes with a friend and accidentally shot himself in the foot! An MP saw it and drove off the base really fast following him and up to the house behind him as he'd run all the way home as fast as his athletic 15 yo legs could carry him. The guy stuck his head in the door and said, "I'll take him to the hospital, ma'am!" My mother didn't believe him at first. He was always joking about that kind of stuff. Oh, my bro in law was Marine Corps. Helo and fixed wing pilot. DFC, Viet Nam, 1967.

I flew on one of the C27s in Panama. It came in landed and took off from the little LZ on the Main post of Ft Sherman. We were told we would be flying to Howard/Ft. Kobbe, we expecting Hueys or Chinooks, which we flew on regularly, instead in flew the c27. Was pretty cool, had never even seen a c27 before.

I was part of the initial QF-102 target drone program that flew out of Tyndall AFB in NW Florida. It was strange to see the videos of some of those planes as they blew apart after being hit. Once hit and deemed too unsafe to bring back to land there is a safety charge inside the plane and it rips the plane apart in the middle. The F-102 and the F-106 looked very much alike and the easiest way to tell them apart was to look and see if the top of the vertical stabilizer had a point to it or not. The F-102 had that point but the F-106 was flat.

I know most of these aircraft are just to supply parts for aircraft still in service but those three or four rows of C-12s (King Air 200) should be made available to the civilian market, or at least to support the civilian parts market for this great airplane. So much hardware now called obsolescence. They all had their day of glory..

Me too! My dad was stationed at DM from 1959-1962 and retired. We moved across Golf Links in what was then a new housing development. In 1961, I had strep throat for the air show that year, but dad took me up on the roof of our quarters so I could watch the Thunderbirds. Then promptly off the roof, back in the house and back to bed! I don't think I'll ever forget that. Great place to watch them. They were flying F-100s! I remember that like it was last week! Cool ass airplane! It looks like it's flyng sitting on the ground. In that time, B-47s were stationed at DM and he did something with their electronics. Electronic counter measures I think. I was 6-7-8 there. No specific memories, but he'd had TV repair training before returning to the military after WWII.

What material do they use to cover glass surfaces and to seal up the planes to keep outside dirt and other stuff from getting inside? // One question: does the extreme heat of the Arizona climate take a big toll on these planes? Those interiors, being sealed up, must get incredibly hot.
@SgtJoeSmith
@SgtJoeSmith Год назад
Im not sure what they use to cover the glass but it is heat reflective. It still gets hot inside but its better to have them in a dry are that doesnt have freezing weather or so or temperature extremes.

I have nothing against the military.One reason I was in the military for a number of years.But I look at this and all of the planes and the most important thing the billions of dollars that is just sitting there.Also there is a bone yard for tanks,jeeps and all kinds of stuff that goes back to WWI.My brother drove a 18 wheeler years ago and he made a delivery to it.No bull,when I got out of the truck I looked and we were inline with Willy's Jeep as far as I could see.One spot had tarps and a shed over it and the guy said go ahead take a look.Under one of the tarps was a brand new Willy's Jeep engine and transmission.BRAND NEW still in a crate with the top off,transmission's beside them.To take a guess I would say they were more than 400 tarped new engines and transmissions just sitting there.Thats something I always wanted a "Wille" jeep and they wouldn't miss one.lol!

Those got sold surplus long ago. You can visit the liquidation sites online for newer machines. M-151 (which were NOT Willy's and shared no parts) were considered rollover prone due to the stupid IRS rear axle and most were quartered for scrap though some are in civilian hands.

They never cut an airplane altogether. They 'transition'. So this is a perfect idea. They can 'stand down' older aircraft without destroying them, and.... they have the option of re-enlisting them with minimal work if there was a serious need without serious cost.
