Hey Guys. So, I was planning to be here during the premiere but I had to attend a dance performance (www.dimitrispapaioannou.com/en/current/transverse-orientation) that got a last minute change due to COVID.... It was great but I was sad to miss this, thank you all who participated! I wanted to answer @Seth Vasquez who was super generous in the chat-thanks! So Seth, yes, huge fan of Herzog, seen most of his work. My top fiction of his would be "Fitzcarraldo", "Aguirre, the wrath of God", "Rescue Dawn" and "Signs of Life" (his first feature, shot in Greece). Top documentaries would be Encounters at the End of the World and Grizzly Man. I think Grizzly Man would be the best entry into Herzog's compendium for anyone who is not familiar with his work. I also think watching Les Blank's Burden of Dreams (i.e the making of Fitzcarraldo) is absolutely worth it (and the source of the most infamous Herzog meme)! As to any other question about work, the gaming industry, influences, inspiration, etc. these are coming in the 2nd part! Cheers, Chris
It's a bit late for that now, I called for questions about a month ago and have already collected them and recorded the answers. But you can ask me stuff here and I'll get to it (unless it's something I cover in part 2).
How did they fit so much humor and talent into one person? Seriously though, you’re amazing Chris. Your tracks are wonderful and your jokes are hilarious.
Great video! One thing I just realized "The Raindrop that Fell to the Sky" is actually a phenomenon that happens in hailstorms where warm updrafts cause raindrops to travel back upwards top the sky and recirculate in clouds building layers of ice on hailstones until the hailstones get too heavy to remain trapped by the warm updrafts. Just a thought I had during the discussion of that song while watching the video, love your work!
Honesly RoR1 has some of the best if not THE best soundtrack i've ever heard and i've been a huge fan of yours ever since. Glad to get some nice answers to some interesting questions~
The marching arts loves and appreciates your productions more than you will ever know! Never stop! There's an unbelievably large mass of your listeners that love your music, but have no idea who you are! NEVER STOP!
Hi Chris, this comment is super late but I'm so glad you keep updating your channel. Your videos provide great insight, your music is so memorable and inspirational, many of the tracks are in my all time favorites. Best wishes to you, keep up the good work!
Thanks for answering my question, can't wait for the RoR expansion's music! Your editing is incredibly entertaining (also I'd love to see a breakdown of Ashes to Ashes)
Just found out about these, fortunately for you, the youtube algorithm was nice enough to keep me away from you long enough to not be able to ask you 50 questions about guitar/piano chords and tabs, but seriously man you are generous enough to like and react to new comments so this is so refreshing to see this from a cool ass artist
I'm sure you've been asked this time and time again but if there's one thing I'd want to be answered in the next part it'd be... Do you have any advice for improving as a composer, musician, etc? DAWs like Cubase are so overwhelming and leave me having no idea where to even start. Thank you for the great music!
The video for part two is already recorded. There are questions related to this, but as I always say, you just need to sit your ass down and study. Also, something that a lot of people confuse is that being a musician is about learning some software. Software is just a tool, learning it will not improve your composition skills or musicianship. It will help you realise the music in your head, but it won't write music for you. That said, it's an important part of the job and the best way is to sit next to someone who knows it and pick up the basics.
One thing I will say about a decent numbers of musicians I enjoy is that they just, ya know, release their music, and that's about all (i.e. they don't really discuss their music or anything, once it's out, that's more or less it until the next release, if that makes any sense). But Chris got me real pogged up ever since I first downloaded the RoR1 OST from Bandcamp and saw there were some lovely PDFs of (if I recall correctly) the sheet music for a variety of the tracks and an overview of the different gear/software used to produce them. It's pretty noice to see a composer/producer/whatever the exact terminology is who continues to discuss their music, do breakdowns of it, and so on rather than just disappear until their next project is completed. So thanks, Chris, for being such a cool fella Also ever since seeing your freeclip video I've been using it an absolute shitton. Believe it or not, it's quite sick, as you said. Wow. This is one of the most incredible things ever - something someone recommends is good. Noice. That is all.
Fantastic video! Thanks for answering my question! As for which tracks I'd like to see breakdowns of, The Raindrop that Fell to the Sky will always be my most requested as it's my favorite track you've written. As for Deadbolt tracks, Blood on the Dancefloor and Ashes to Ashes, to Ashes (to Ashes) would be my top picks, but I adore so much of the soundtrack. The Banality of Eternity, Werner und Klaus, The Proverbial Dust Biters, any track would be awesome really! I quite like the small amount of the Blubber Busters OST you played for us, and would love to hear it and any other unreleased music you've made! Super hyped for the RoR2 DLC OST and part two of this Q&A. Congrats on 30k, here's to 30k more and beyond!
if i didn't know already from your music, i would know from the way you talk about metal that you're a metalhead. i'm about 86% sure this is meant as a compliment.
I've since finished gospels of the flood and absolutely recommend it! Not only is it interesting, it kinda landed *exactly* where am at with a lot in life, as someone raised very religious. Thanks for everything you do, I'm off to listen to hexadecimal :P
7:29 - "And all of the Risk of Rain games" - I immediately paused, put on my tinfoil hat and went looking if somebody else in the comments has picked up on what might be hiding under that banner ;)
No matter what you upload I just have a massive grin all the way to the end of your videos, I dont study music yet I watch your breakdowns. Thank you chris for enriching games with your music and for being a stellar person!
@@AstronautDown I actually couldn't tell if you're teasing or being sincere, but either way, I realized that I can still watch this on the plane. The plane has wifi, so I won't have to miss it! Gonna see my fiancée for the first time in over two years. The plane ride is long though, so actually I'm glad this Q&A coincides with the flight. It'll be good on-flight entertainment! Thanks for all your hard work, Chris. Looking forward to hearing what you've cooked up for the upcoming RoR2 expansion!
@@AstronautDown I'll try to make it! It all depends on how long it takes me to get through the airport. I mistook my flight time (thought it was at 10:30 AM PST but it's actually at 1:30 PM) so I'll be in the airport when it goes live. I'll try to get in the live chat, but don't hold it against me if I'm late or miss it!
I have to say, you are by far one of my favorite composers. The ROR2 soundtrack is absolutely amazing and inspirational. Even though they are instrumental, they've inspired some really cool ideas for my writing. "...con lentitud poderosa" especially helped me work through a bit of writer's block and kick out an idea I'm super proud of. Did realize you had a channel. Can't wait to dig through it!
Great Q&A, Chris! Since you said "fat chance" about live performances, I guess I should stop tagging you when Geoff Keighley asks Twitter for suggestions of which musicians to bring onto the Game Awards. 😅
Hello Chris I don't know if this has been asked before but I was wondering if there was any specific inspiration for you going into the music industry, not sure if that's the right wording but I'm not sure how to ask it? Also hearing you mention Azathoth when talking about the flute was really cool because it was something I had read about before and figured it wouldn't be something that would make a difference but hearing you mention it pertaining to your tracks makes me think of the song in a whole new way. Sorry if this is a long comment, I just had a lot to ask and mention but thank you for making all that you have, it has been a dream to listen to all that you have made bro and I can't wait to hear everything that you're working on.
I'll be talking quite a bit about inspiration and composery stuff in the second part, hope you get your answer there. As for Azathoth, Lovecraft is a huge influence on me and I was always fascinated by his description of an idiot god spending his eternal dream listening to mad flutes and drums :)
The only thing i would have asked is When did you start making music and then when did you take it seriously Great q&a the questions where good although some of them where funky
I do like how if I comment there’s a very good chance that Chris sees it and sometimes even replies, grats on the 30k dude. You got a very chatty cat too!
@@AstronautDown Huh. I guess I should start lurking around music communities. I honestly thought that it's a well received genre due to the high ratings they receive on youtube.
It's very interesting that even describing the music of the DLC could give away secrets... 🤔 Also, great video, one of the funniest Q&As I've seen in a long time!
Nah, it's not nearly as interesting as you might think, I just don't want to create false expectations because people tend to read too much into shit. In any case, the Development Thoughts are now showing more of the DLC content with every new installment.
@@AstronautDown that's completely reasonable! After seeing people fall into the same trap (overexpect, get disappointed) so often I try not to overthink things, but it's still fun to think about smaller details. Thank you for keeping us grounded, while not spoiling anything!
A question: if I were to arrange some of your songs for orchestra and play them with an actual orchestra, will you allow that? This is just one of the many ideas my mind has and i havent started on this at all. Also im not a professional music by any means, let allone arrange for orchestra.
If there's anything good about it it's because I've spent countless hours studying music (practically a lifetime, since, the years of my life I _haven't_ studied music are a small percentage of its span by now) and still do every single day. It's simple really, anyone can do it :)
@@AstronautDown Thats a bummer, Is there any way of getting the sheet music for TRFKaP and ...con lentitud poderosa? I am learning guitar and those are my favorite tracks of all time! Edit: just learned difference between a song and a track
