30W Bipolar Tesla Coil

This is a simple bipolar Tesla coil that's small enough to touch while it's running. A bipolar tesla coil is simply a tesla coil that has both sides of its secondary coil connected to electrodes facing each other, as opposed to a typical tesla coil which uses earth ground (or a sufficiently large ground plane) as one pole of its secondary coil.
This is probably the cheapest, easiest, and most convenient way to create a very high voltage power supply - simply a dimmer switch and an ignition coil. The output of my supply is over 30,000V DC.
Here's a list of the hardware i used:
Box - Hobby Lobby
6uF/220V Capacitor - Salvaged from an old microwave. This part is equivalent to the one i had: www.amazon.com...
600W Dimmer Switch - www.amazon.com...
Ignition Coil -

Primary Wire: 12 turns of 12 AWG Solid copper
Secondary Wire: ~1700 turns 32 AWG magnet wire
Electrode Arms: 1/4" Copper Tubing
Electrode Tips: www.amazon.com...
Everything else is 3d printed with PLA on a Prusa MK3S.

Interesting! Somehow I've never seen using TC windings in such configuration, not sure if it can be still called TC or just a transformer but still is fun ;-) The part before coils resembles a thing I made way back as a teenager in pre-RU-vid times. I remember using few caps in paralel to increase the max current from 230V mains (I live in Poland so as most of Europe we have 230V). And I had it rectified still at that stage so it did not require HV rectifier. The switching frequency of about 15Hz was supplied from NE555 controlling 12V relay since I had bad time burning through a bunch oftransistors too expensive for my teenage pocket money budget :D Such switched DC supply was then fed to two ignition coils where one had reversed polarity effectively doubling the voltage between them. Did not thought then about adding a second stage as you did here although plans for making TC were on my mind ;-). But even with this simple contraption I had a lot of fun and even had a video about it that was Internet accessible from a small server placed in my very bedroom :D Ah, those good old days when internet was harder yet simpler haha. BTW, I assume there's a mistake on the schematic you've shown and the secondary winding isn't shorted with neutral line but rather goes to the negative terminal of the bridge, right? This looks strange as one of the diodes in the bridge effectively shorts the ignition coil in each half cycle.

Nice build. I can touch a 80 VA spark gap Tesla coil with a metal piece and nothing happens, but I cant touch it with fingers. The arcs could light a cigar.

You should use an inductor between the high voltage rectifier and capacitor.

That DIY high voltage capacitor is dope! I'll try making one someday😄 Do you have any future plans of building a musical Tesla coil?

Maybe, but I haven't built an SSTC before so I'd have to figure that out first

So… nice design, I’m considering a similar one. I am curious as to why you rectified the ignition coil output instead of just using the AC.

So why not boost your voltage to higher numbers for coil induced magnetic propulsion? Is there a reduction in current associated with this?

Do you mean using this for a ring accelerator / coilgun?

@@HyperspacePirate Yes. Is this a DC current?
@HyperspacePirate
@HyperspacePirate 3 года назад
@@TheSicGamer The power supply i built for this is DC, yeah. It could be used to a coil launcher, but it's more challenging to build capacitors to store large amounts of energy at this voltage, since regular electrolytic caps won't cut it. For example, the cap bank in this power supply is ~4nF at 30,000V which is only 1.8 joules of stored energy. It would take up a lot of space to store, say, 100 or 200 joules at the same voltage. You also run into issues with projectile saturation when you have an extremely high current pulse, and lose efficiency. A better approach at this voltage might be an induction coil that repels an aluminum projectile
