My best find was at my local Salvation Army I found a small canteen shaped purse that I fell in love with; I bought it for $3.99 since it was half off day and when I got home I realized it was brand new so I googled the brand name “Etienne Aigner” and realized it’s a $230 purse I couldn’t believe it....sometimes the thrift stores don’t know what they have 😂
The joy of thrift stores: IT'S THE HUNT! My best find was a 25 cent book at a library sale - it was a yearbook from the US Army's Cavalry School (at Ft. Riley, Kansas) from the year that then-Major George Patton attended the school. It included an essay by MAJ Patton. It made the very best present I ever gave to my brother - a US Army Armored Cavalry officer.
Mikayla Skierski, I went to a local Hospital Auxiliary (Hazel Hawkins in Hollister) several years ago when they were fixing to move to a bigger place. The sign said, "All Womens' Clothing $1.00" so I took all 6 real leather coats & jackets to the register. The girl questioned it, manager was brought up, she said the sign said..., sell them to her for $1 !!!! I STILL wear them, one is a gorgeous calf-length duster, another is designer waist-coat, another a brown bomber, another biker-type; the rest I have to family!!!!
I went once to a cute thrift store in a small town where i used to live. There was a fill (STUFF!!!) a paper grocery bag for $3 apiece special major sale. I found the two most awesome red and camel knee-length leather fitted coats. Both truly vintage i believe. They didn't mark them as not for sale in the brown grocery paper bag sale but hesitated greatly on allowing that major steal. I still feel that $20 each was an amazing find. Alas both are dead now. One, i got too heavy for and the sleeves ended up being too short anyway and no returns (red one and SUCH beautiful color. Blue-based vivid red...maybe cross between cherry, candy apple and strawberry reds. Or the color British Red Coat like the iconic L'Oreal lipstick shade or cherries in the snow lipstick by Revlon...but as usual i seriously digress.) I wore that camel coat every day in fall and winter and even early spring, until i wore it out from daily use. The loss and grief was overwhelming...just kidding.
Vintage Christian Dior trench coat $49.99 Google it $300. Givenchy red caplet jacket/coat $49.99 couldn't find anything on Google similar but Givenchy is expensive af. Marmot coat $34.99 Google $425. Jams World Hawaiian dresses(3) $2.99 each Google $133 each. Louis Vuitton mini backpack $30 took it to the LV store confirmed it was real. Columbia coats(3) & Columbia full ski onesie $6.49 each also, Columbia ski pants $4.99 everyone knows the brand it ain't cheap. I live & thrift in Brooklyn, NY.
thrift used to be good for me, I have an extensive collection of vintage dresses, however, during the past year or year and a half I notice that they're pricing the items really high, local shops, goodwill, salvation, anywhere..... and tip #33, it's a lesson hard learned, when buying clothes don't take them straight home, even if you spend a little extra time and money, take them to the dry cleaners or the washateria, cloth moths can hide very very well even if you think it's clean, the getting rid of those suckers and the damage they can cause to your other items is not worth it
Monalisa Menno I stopped shopping Goodwill, because their prices are higher now than several discount retailers. A manager once told me, they price items according to their "typical retail value". That's so wrong. And I even see a lot of Dollar Tree items in there, priced from $5 - $10. They KNOW they're ripping us off.
Monalisa Menno ... OR you could take large plastic bags (trash bags etc.) and put the clothing in it and tie it closed....those moths can't get into your home that way, and you've got extra time to plan a trip to the laundromat in a day or two.
many of my clothes and shoes that usually catch my friends' attention are the ones from the thrift shop. it's really a good feeling not mainly because i'm being complimented, but because digging through the items in the store and getting them for an affordable price are pure heaven. ♥
Also, some big name stores donate to thrift stores. Our target donates items that don't sale to our goodwill. That includes anything from furniture to baby wipes.
Different thrift stores, you'll find, have a different "flavor" if you go there often. I have three in my area I shop often, and I've learned A has great handmade quilts a lot, B has really good clothing my size, and C has furniture and art I like. All three stores sell all those things, but each one has it's own pool of donators, which influences what exactly they have to sell.
+Marialla I would forego the furniture unless you are capable of cleaning it well. Bedbugs are to bad right now and a infestation will cost you more than you would save.
These are all amazing tips! I absolutely love thrifiting! I'm in the Portland, Oregon area and do well with mostly Goodwill here. I seriously can't imagine paying full price and shopping at retail stores!
As someone who works at a thrift store, I almost threw up. I've seen things that will make you want to wash, bleach, and steam everything you buy from one.
What about bed bugs or something else? I usually wash and iron new stuff from Dillards where we have 70% plus additional 30 - 40%. Estate sales, probably, a better option.
this is so helpful!! i love the ethics behind thrift stores, so much less wasteful! also the thing about out of town thrift stores is true af i find the best stuff at thrift stores that aren't in my city
+ohceanique It's so true!! Love thrifting in other cities!! I just shared a thrifted levis JEANS DIY on my channel! Would love for you to check it out!
LOVE thrift store shopping! Found sooo many good pieces of clothing over the years, all in great condition for a fraction of the price you would spend in the stores!
Minna Randolph I'm not a breakfast person bc when I'm running errands, the "heavy" feeling slows me down!lol! But I go early to the thrift stores... then always regret not eating!lol So I keep a protein bar in my bag now...Just gotta remember to bring water too! Thrift Shopping isn't a jog...it's a marathon!!!
I work next door to a thrift store so I go in often! A few finds include a Rebecca minkoff bag, a k-cup carousel, a pair of almost new converse, a few video games, season 1/2 of game of thrones, a couple times I've found cross stitching supplies and latest my wallet that's olivia+joy! Everything was super cheap!
Great tips i think i use all of them , we have 11 thrift stores in out suburb and i go to at least 3 of them every week , and i do agree you have to dig deep and look through everything , my last 3 grandchildren have been dressed beautifully in label clothes ..great video ty x
Why are you so likeable? Just keep doing whatever you're doing, you're amazing. The video, the personality, the thrifting traditions, the editing. Amazing.
it's my dream to do a thrifting road trip in the US. But it'll probably kill me, not only cause I can't drive, but because of all the great furniture and decor items I could spot in your vid alone and not being able to take them with me on the plane back home. The Dutch are so frugal everything here is picked over or priced ridiculously.
I have always wanted to run a business where I mail clothes to other countries for someone there to resell. >D I wanted a degree in intl. business when I was 15 for that reason... but I lost my connections in Japan to make it happen. ::sighs:: So many countries where this kind of thing would work. My Dutch friends complain that their secondhand jeans are as expensive as higher-end brand jeans here in America! o.o *or* I could get a secondhand pair here for ~$10 and ship them for $10-15 by weight. heh.
I currently work in a thrift store and you won’t believe all good stuff people donate ! Sometimes you open up a bag full of Lacoste shirts or Levis... the thing is that we gotta price more than 2000 items a day so that means that we don’t have time to check clothes correctly. So always check good before you buy !
Bring socks along with those slip off shoes! In case you find a pair of sneakers or something, but you don't want to put your bare feet in them Some of my best thrift finds have been maxi skirts. The area I'm in has a pretty large religious community (many dress on the modest side) and we have theme parks near by (some look like costume/uniform wear) so I get to pick up lots and lots of long skirts for less than $4. Some other faves: a pair of Demonia heels for $5, a musical carousel with my birthstone, and a vintage (vinyl) copy of Deliver by The Mamas & The Papas.
Love this. I've been shopping at Goodwill for decades. My home is 95% furnished from Goodwill, thrift stores, and resale apps. And people tell me all the time how beautiful it is. Cheap is fun!! Yes, the hunt is fun!!
You have great tips! And your personality is vivid and warm. I'm a thrifter and reseller in Big D. We have about a dozen great "honey holes" here but I highly recommend the local charity thrifts in your city, wherever that is. They tend to have lower prices because they want to move a lot of merch. AND you're helping a local cause like a women's shelter, hospital or other nonprofit. Happy thrifting! OH, my best find: Mary McFadden 1980 Fortuny pleat skirt, $1. Sold it for $125.
I love retro clothes and I find that Goodwill is a great place to find them! I also agree with the stinky items! It's more costly to try and remove odor from clothing, especially if it never comes off the clothes! So many of my jewelry came from thift stores, too!
If the item is very inexpensive, I have taken the chance and machine-washed "Dry Clean Only" items. I have had some things fall apart, but more often than not, I have been successful. Nonetheless, I am more willing to take a chance on a stained garment than a smelly one. Also, if a blouse or dress is large enough, I will wash it and then re-cut and re-style it, removing the sweat-stained underarm and collar areas.
I found a vintage 70s wedding dress in perfect condition. The lace on the bodice was stunning and the small train was all set for bustling too. What was most amazing was that it fit me like a glove and even my height. $25 for it. I never wore it, I just like looking at it
Since my mom sews, I learned to turn the clothing inside out to make sure it's properly lined/not damaged. Also, some items are handmade but made extremely well and that's always a score! I live in the DC area so I hit the Value Villages and Goodwills (there are plenty between DC, MD, VA) and my favorite is the Salvation Army in Alexandria VA. It's where I've picked up all of my Oscar De La Renta, Guiseppe Zannotti and BCBG!
I found a L'objet candle (which I had to google while I was shopping), found out it retails for $130 and I scored it for $5. It had only been burned once and barely at all. Such a thrill.
One of my best thrift store finds was a Longaberger Purse basket with the liner and protector for 25 cents. It was in a huge box of baskets and I almost overlooked it. One of our favorite pieces of furniture is a big wooden chair that was left on the side of the road, so it was free. Hubby painted it white and I bought Sunbrella fabric (60% off) to reupholster the seat. It's gorgeous, fun and very comfortable.
Yes, I understand completely when you encounter a designer luxury item at bargain prices....it is amazing. I attain a authentic beautiful Black Leather, Mens Coach Legacy tote bag for $80.00. Which retail for $700 or $800 in excellent condition. I gotten a timeless Mens full length Blk. Shearling coat for $15.00 Which retail for any where from $1200 or $2000 depending on where you purchase new like Neiman Marcus or Barney's of New York. Many other wonderful fines over the years thrifting. I go frequently least one a month and donate some items back once done with items and get a receipt for my taxes for charitable donations. Helping the homeless and providing job training in the Goodwill corporation, Salvation Army, maybe other stores when you Thrift plus savings ect. Is why I thrift.
Going thrifting this weekend. Gotta update my wardrobe, find some home decor since I just moved, and got a few DIYs in mind. Goodwill is always a treasure trove.
the hell kind of thrift stores do you have? i live in a terrible small town so everything is either dirty confederate flags for 99 cents or nothing at all
My best thrift store find was this really cool snow globe that was on this beautiful Mahogany wood stand thingy. It's in amazing condition and it has a beautiful bird on the inside. It was also only five bucks! A really good score!!
Wow. The trift store here completely suck. They have nothing good AT ALL. a lot of junk and over priced. Like $12 for a shirt at the thrift T shirt? You can find that at tj Max.
Oh, I always bring a jewelry loop, blanket or old towels, empty box, hand sanitizer, measuring tape and everything else you've shared, my husband and I do that! I think you're my kindred thrift store sister! ;-)
Such a nice fun video to end my day with! Thank you Mary! I know exactly how number thirty applies! I snapchatted my whole day of thrifting and I swear...all my favorite things disappeared.
A lot of women look through clothing in the men's section, for their boyfriends or hubby's. Nothing wrong at all. I actually found myself a pair of sports related pants, which are geared toward men buying them. $2.50! :D
I frequently shop the men's section! Jeans, button downs, tees, sweatshirts. I swear men's clothing is made better than women's. I also hit up the boys XL/16 racks for tees, dress pants, and hoodies:)
I feel like we are bffs already, but not in a creepy way! I just discovered your channel and I LOVE IT!! I also grew up playing in antique stores (my Mom owned an antique store in the valley, and all our family vacations were spent being dragged to antique stores across the country) and as I grew older it weirdly turned into a passion for interior design, and thrifting! And I live in Santa Monica, so it is so fun to see your stuff on Venice and Crossroads and local thrift stores. Thanks for posting! I am totally loving it!
I’ve been watching thrifting videos lately & stumbled upon yours! I have to say this is the absolute BEST hands down thrifting video I’ve came across! You nailed it!! 💯educational 💯valuable info 💯organized content 💯appropriate pictures 💯cute friendly messenger But MOST OFF ALL 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯to the point!!!!! didn’t waste a bunch of time talking about sh*t that doesn’t matter!!!!! Thanks girl!
One time I found these beautiful Calvin Klein high waisted jeans. Could barely sit down in them so I cut them into shorts. Eventually grew out of them though. Still, they were amazing!
I think I may have a super power when it comes to thrifting. Sometimes this overwhelming feeling just hit's me that I need to make a thrift store run, those times are the times I always find the best stuff.
Yaaaaas! This is a genius vid. I buy as much as poss at thrift shops but am doing a spring living room refresh. Any great sources for throw pillow covers in the 10-20 dollar range? Need some color back in my liiiife. Love ya!
I JUST found some on the H&M website 2 days ago! I didn't even know they carried home goods but they do! it's it's own whole section! I guess it's new. But I got some really nice covers (20x20) for $4.99 I think? maybe $5.99...
These were such great tips! One thing I do when thrifting is to just look at colors and patterns as I go through the racks. If I love the material, then I look at the style, size, price, etc. That way, I find stuff in unexpected places and I can even consider altering something if I like it enough. Also, sidenote: you know that saying, "Wear your clothes, don't let your clothes wear you"? I feel like you're one of those people that it doesn't matter what you're wearing, you just rock it so confidently and comfortably! You are #goals. 😊
One of my best finds was a pair of Sperrys in amazing condition for $3. I also bought a pair of UGG boots for $4 and sold them on eBay for $45. Gotta love resell!! Most recent find though is a knee length down quilted coat for $15. Almost brand new and is super warm!!
I love thrifting because of the thrill of the hunt! I rewatched this video because I love your tips; They are all so helpful! I just went to my favorite Value Village in my city and I scored BIG TIME! 22 items for only $80!!!
I feel the same way! The thrill of the hunt is the best. Some days I strike out with nothing but the days that you find absolute treasures make it absolutely worth it!
Love these kinds of videos and thrifting in general. Went to one of my old fave thrift shops yesterday for a nosey and found me the Stieg Larsson collection for $2! Couldn't resist, had to buy!!
+Lizbeth Hernandez (IMLVH) I personally love thrifting and DIY videos and checked your video out and loved it!! Keep doing you girl...people will try to dull your shine but your stuff is so good don't let them 😌🙌🏽
I love your energy! I run a Sparrows Nest Thrift Store in Algonquin Illinois and its a blast. I never knew the cool fun stuff to be had and it’s purchase with a purpose too as we do it all for the homeless in our area.
Thanks for the great tips ! My favorite thrift store finds are all kinds of furniture that does not wobble . I spray it white and put on folk art paintig between the handles and several mismatched pieces are looking like a match. Great for Kids room and be creative with the paint. and ideas. How about a dresser in sky blue and straight stipes to top and paint daisies across top drawer. add lady bugs, etc. birds. etc. I did this for bedroom furniture for adults this way: I ainted over the brown with black enamel ( prie first ) I added brass oval handles and I put a stencil in between the handles in red. This looked like beautiful Chinese black, gold and red bedroom set ( the red was for the stencil - just a bit ) Merry Rodgers
Whenever I watch these videos I get so jealous, as we don't really have thrift stores in the UK. We have 'charity shops' but they're nearly always tiny... It's just not the same. I did however once find this amazing grey wool bomber jacket, very COS - like. And a grey matte dinnerware set, so good!
Ruth Leslie - I visited a friend in Edinburgh, and found quite a few of those charity shops... some great finds there. Morningside was a treasure trove.
These tips are awesome. However, I used to work at Goodwill. When it was summer we didn't push sweaters and long sleeves. And vise versa, when it was winter we didn't push as many summer clothes. Also, cashiers usually, at least in the case of my store, don't have any control over the price. But it is nice to be NICE- because they will definitely take care of your stuff better and be more helpful!
I ran into a friend at my usual thrifting place and she was super happy to see me, I just smiled awkwardly and nodded as she talked. Mostly I was just sad because now it wasn't just my special place...
Hello if you enjoy DIY's and thrift store hunts and follow me around the flea markets I just started my channel where I will be doing all that.hopefully you like to check it out :)
Where's #31??? Anyways, I actually work at a thriftstore and one time a pair of Christian Dior knee high blue suede boots were donated to us... With the box and everything!! It took about 20 minutes for them to be sold!!
@@rhondamontgomery4043 I've heard that the item has to be on the store floor for one day before workers are allowed to buy it; however there have to be at least *occasional* shenanigans taking place...hiding things and what not. But I don't think I could work at a thrift store--I'd be perpetually frustrated and tempted.
when you find an amazing jean jacket that fits perfectly for 6.99. but being nice she gave me the jacket for 1.99 Becuase sweaters were on sale. best find ever!
Rule #32 Before going out and buying something new that you want/need spend a few weeks looking at thrift stores. Rule #33 Think ahead for gifts. If the item is in good condition no one will care that it came from a thrift store. Especially antiques. Rule #34 When looking for clothes go alone so you can take your time, when looking for furniture take someone with you. Rule #35 Drop off items at thrift stores you go to less so that you don't see your old items and feel regret.
+Amanda Jacqueline Nice!! Great tips. I DEF agree on #35. LOL. Not that I have regret but it's so weird to walk around and see your old stuff FOR SURE!!
