#31 - Finishing off the back of a canvas

Hi everyone!
Thanks for joining me again.
A while back, one of my subscribers had asked me to do a video and show how I finish off the back of my canvases.
So of course, I happily agreed.
Not everyone finishes off their canvases - it’s a preference for everyone.
For me, I like to finish them off as it looks more professional.
However, if I had a gallery wrapped canvas I would not finish the back on that. I would leave it as is.
I hope this video is helpful to those watching it. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
I am always happy to help!
Thanks again to everyone for all the love and support and the wonderful comments I read everyday on my videos!!! 💕

I love the idea of using a custom stamp to sign your paintings. So much cleaner than ink or pencil, and far easier than paint!

thanks Danielle... i love the stamp as well but I also now sign the back with a sharpie and date it... the stamp is still nice and classy, but having your actualy signature is good too

You really helped me with this information for the backing. Really well done. You helped me solve an issue I was having. At first, I was concerned because I've been hanging mine with just the back of the canvas wood, and not adding hardware, but this is much better. Grateful to the lady you asked and to you for giving of your time to help those of us who might be novices.

Thank you as always for sharing your knowledge. I was looking at ways to apply a dust cover to the back of my paintings and came across this one. Double sided tape takes away to issue with the staples however one thing that I saw in another video from the UK was to spray the paper lightly with water and rub in gently with a paper towel once you apply it to the back of your piece. When the paper dries it is tight like a drum. Of course, you would have to stamp after the paper dried. P.S. I am always so impressed with how immaculate you keep your work area and bottles. Mine looks like...well, lets just not go there lol.... Love from a fellow Canadian Artist

I've seen others use double-sided tape and it seemed cumbersome and a lot of extra work, money and quite honestly frustratrating for me bc I can see myself getting the tape stuck to itself and me. I did a cool pour in my wine glass. Turned it upside down and poured ! I like experimenting on anything. BTW....I did one with string where you wet your string & make a pattern on your canvas. Put another canvas (same size) on top, then pulled the strings from the e sides & "wa la", it wasn't bad! HAVE A BLESSED THANKSGIVING. WE ALL LOVE YOU & THE FAMILY

Rather than those heavy wide staples, you might want to try a T-20 staple gun. The gun is muck easier to manage and and the thinner staples go in more flush.

Just FYI Bent staples are usually cause by the workpiece (canvas frame) bouncing when you depress the trigger on the staple gun. Make sure you are on a solid surface, and press down hard while sending that staple home. Thanks for your instructional video.

No it hasn’t. Quite frankly I do not do this to the back of my pieces anymore. I found the paper would rip or get wrinkly etc. you also can’t hang the artwork from its frame because of the paper - which means you have to provide hanging hardware. I no longer do that either.

It's difficult for me to legibly sign my name. So I'm looking at a stamp option. I discussed the signing issue with an art store individual and when I told him I was looking at a fine line marker for signing. He said anything that conflicts with the type of painting you are signing makes it mixed media and not, say, watercolor. (He had a hard time saying acrylic pour.) What are your thoughts on that?

I love the idea of the rubberstamp for your name! Just a quick question a lot of artist use the double-sided tape and put the backing on it. The staple gun is a great idea ....is that just a personal preference for you or why do you not like the double-sided tape choice?

Thank you so much for this tutorial I had thought I would do that but wasn’t sure if it was the right way to do it. I also have a question about paintings that I have done. I had a lot of resin bubbles on the back. I bought a Dremel tool to take them off however I did mess up some of the canvas. is there anyway to avoid those resin bubbles were they don’t harden on the back.?
@KanellaCiracoArt
@KanellaCiracoArt 5 лет назад
Hi Jerry, you are referring to resin drips I believe. If you are going to resin your canvases it might be helpful to add painters tape to the back. Once dry, you can then peel the tape off with the drips attached to it. Check out my video # 16 - cleaning off the excess resin. That should be helpful.

i prefer the staples... glue could get messy (although I have never tried it) and I would fear tape would not hold over time.

How do you know what to price things at?
@KanellaCiracoArt
@KanellaCiracoArt 4 года назад
such a tough question to answer - there are SOOOOO many variables... just price it to what you think it right.. and enough to at least cover your costs... it's what ever you feel comfortable with

Meri Scott no problem! I’ve seen some people use double sided tape. I’ve never tried that myself. I prefer the staples :)

Kanella Ciraco Art I wouldn’t think the tape would hold up. But, I ❤️ using my staple gun.

Do you still finish off you canvases like this? If not how of you do it now?
@debrapolenz4962

Why would you use staples when you can use artist adhesive spray like professionals use? For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, its an adhesive spray that works like rubber cement, only one side it is a temporary stick and you can peel off as needed, or permanent would be spraying both surfaces and wait the time stated on can, then apply the brown paper back to canvas. (on permanent application you need to be exact you cannot move around.) I would never use staple to finish of a piece of artwork. Sorry, but not professional looking at all.
