In this video I have a first look at a new loco for my n-gauge model railway - a Graham Farish Stanier 8F in black LMS livery. As well as reviewing the model, I also will also install a Zimo MX658 DCC sound decoder with 8F sounds by YouChoos.
Finally I test is the loco is capable of hauling a full coach set up gradients and also test to see if it is able to negotiate a first radius curve.

Hi Phillip, Nice video! the next 18 makes things so simple, Great looking loco and it sounds so good! I remember buying the 4mt sound on the next 18 chip from John at youchoos, he gave me a funny look as the farish 4mt doesn't have a next 18 socket LOL! I had to explain to him that My sound system is what's called underboard sound, and that I would be using a next 18 breakout board to wire into my system 😁. at that time next 18 was so new, and he didn't even realise you could get breakout boards. Since then I have seen a few people hard wire N-gauge locos to the next 18 sockets as it's so much easier to install and remove the chips in locos providing you have enough room. You are correct about the solder points on the chip they are used for functions, but can also be used for Susi. All the best Tony.

Funny you mention it - I have just bought 3 DigiHats and 3 Next18 breakout boards with a view to future conversions. I have an Old Farish 4P compound waiting to be converted, so I think that will be a future project. wiring in a next 18 socket seems ideal as I can use a blanking board to test the conversion on DC before adding in a proper chip. I have also bought a sueth smoke generator to go in the 4P (hopefully). If I can find room for a speaker in the tender too, it will be an awesome conversion :) Definitely a video or two in all of that. But first I need to sort out my infrared detectors and iTrain.....

@@naivegauge The beauty about the next 18 is the speakers will wire directly to the socket rather than the chip, I covered the next 18 in my decoder video. will be very interested to see how you get on with the Sueth smoke gen. next you'll be exploring servos for uncoupling locos 😂😂😂. it has been done in 2mm on a shunter. At this rate it might be worth you getting hold of a decoder tester so you can set up a test bench, and try different functions and cv's before installing in a loco. All the best Tony.

Hi just found your channel and subscribed, enjoyed your 8F video as trying to find one for my layout but like gold dust! I am looking forward to watching your other videos 😊 Cheers Gary

Brilliant! And thank you for explaining it so simply. Remarkable what is now becoming available in N gauge - sound makes it so realistic.

Good job, welcome to the world of sound fitting. Gratefully, I think manufacturers are starting to consider sound in N gauge, ie fitting speakers or at least provision for the decode4 and speaker. Its taken a few years but finally its a much easier job now than it used to be even 3-4 years ago. Be nice to see it running on the layout maybe bit more at speed, when you set it up on itrain?

Modern locos have so many more features. I am sure I will get it going at speed soon :)

Does it go around first radius?
@naivegauge
@naivegauge 2 года назад
Excellent question - that was one of my main concerns buying it, but in the end I just bought it anyway so I could find out. I have first radius curves on my layout, so that is one of the things that I needed to test, before whether to put it straight on ebay or not!

Hi Philip. Just curious: model manufacturers usually suggest testing a loco on DC before fitting a decoder; you didn't appear to do so - does anyone?
@naivegauge
@naivegauge 2 года назад
No, I did not, and yes, you are right - I probably should have..... But it is so exciting to have a new toy - I just want to play!! To be honest, I do not have a length of track and a DC controller that is easy to set up to do such a test. I think manufacturers suggest you do it, so that they can say "well it worked in its factory condition - if it does not work with DCC then that is your fault." Obviously with any technology, you want to eliminate as many variables as possible when unit testing a component.

The whistle sounds are not as good as the Bachmann chip, no echo and not much variation...but sound grouping is better....
