I once met somebody who pronounced Rolex as "Roleigh", they were clearly trying to act posh and well educated but had no idea what they were doing and it was hilarious.
@@barto22 Casio may have changed the spelling, but it doesn't mean that they pronounce it that way. My remark was snarky, because it seems a little too pedantic to try to pronounce luxury watch names as a fluent French or German speaker would.
This video was so many different things. Educational, entertaining, interesting, and hilarious! Hearing the 'American' pronunciations was both painful and hysterical at the same time, just because I know people who actually do that stuff...
Great video as always, but the picture at 6:46 doesn't show Schaffhausen but rather Stein am Rhein, which is around 15 km away from Schaffhausen. Grüße aus Deutschland :)
Here's another fine Swiss French brand worth mentioning which most English speakers probably wont get right, "Jaquet Droz" Founded in 1738 by Pierre Jaquet-Droz and now famous for producing amazing very intricate artistic watch complications. The Bird minute repeater is mind blowing.
As an American I always had to ask the salesmen how to pronounce the watch and then forgot. Will keep this video for future reference. Thank you. BTW I have a silver and black GP watch that I wear with my harringbone gray suit.
Flannel suit and boots go perfect with that vintage Reverso. Love it. That watch looks very interesting too, I like the art deco style of the Reverso. But the modern models are a bit too big and boxy. Will check out the vintages. Where do you get your suits done?
Thank you for this. I am amused by some of the well known horology "experts" on RU-vid who cannot be bothered to even make a stab at correct pronunciation of many of these brands. You, sir, have mad polyglot skills!
In fairness, he grew up in Germany. He's definitely fluent in German. Wouldn't be surprised if he's fluent in French too. Americans (and I am one) get totally shortchanged on language education, and end up monolingual. Totally the opposite in Europe. So it's a little unfair to bag on the American watch RU-vidrs for being, well, raised in America.
I loved the video but at 8:04 you said American store and showed a photo of a Amsterdam based vintage watch store. They have a youtube channel too with some pretty nice videos that might be interesting to watch if you are interested in vintage menswear.
Excellent video and a masterclass in pronunciation. Your French was flawless too (at least to my ear). Unfortunately, Biel was misspelt at 09:51 as “Beil”. Sorry to be ‘that guy’. Huge fan of the channel.
As a french guy, i won't speak about german names and such. Concerning french names, even if i heard few subtles mistakes, i must say that u nailed it! Way more accurate than any other english sources! P.S: You have to pronounce the "R" in Jaeger and not pronounce the 2nd "L" in Lecoultre. I know... Pretty confusing. As a french, i said it wrong too. source: Jaeger Lecoulte employe
en tant qu'employée de JLC, tu peux confirmer sa prononciation de "Jaeger" comme "zhezhe" ? En Suisse romande je n'entends que "JaeGère" comme la prononciation allemande.
@@CyclingNick970 Yeah, I thought so too. In Germany we pronounce the first word german and the "Le Coultre" french. Google Translate also says that there is no such word as Jaeger in French, but the translation of the German Word would be "Chasseur".
Hi, nice video but requires quite important correction on Patek Philippe. This is combination of 2 surnames -> Antoni Patek, who was Polish, and Adrien Philippe, who was French. Polish words and names are ALWAYS emphasized on penultimate syllabus, so it is not pa-TEK, but PA-tek. French names and words are always stressed on the last syllabus, so phi-LIPPE is OK. So the whole name is not pa-TEK phi-LIPPE, but PA-tek phi-LIPPE. Lot of people make mistake here. Sterns, company owners pronounce it correctly, there is also a nice video of Jenni Elle, who explains it right. Hope you will also remember it :)
This video is very much useful especially to me. Without this, I would most definitely have been pronouncing most of the names wrongly. Someone even pronounced Cartier correctly and I thought they were wrong. The most informing are Cartier and A. Lange & Sohne. Thank you.
In french, the l in le coultre is silent; we have a lot of useless letter that are put in word, like the "esn" in domesnil is traduced "é". Amazing video nontheless, really love your style
WHICH "l" is silent? Personally, I think the French Academy rolls dice to see which letters are silent an which are just wrong, and makes that the standard. :-)
David Weihe you pronouce « coutre » instead of « coultre » , but yeah, we have a dumb laguage. I think it’s old french words that got new but kept some old « roots ». For example, many old word used to have « est » like in « forest » and it became « forêt ». Typically the « ltr » or the « esn » looks like old letter combination
I love your personality. I like the sardonic little smile you get when you imitate we American’s likely mispronunciations. I thought it funny, however, that when you said ‘France,’ you sounded like you’re from Brooklyn!
Pronouncing the brand should be a prerequisite for purchasing any of these brands. It shows that you're serious and have a true respect for the brand. Otherwise, I love his pronunciations, so natural.
If I remember correctly, that Patek Phillippe watch was made and auctioned specifically for charity. It is one of a kind. It literally says "the only one" on it.
Could you do an in depth review of the JLC Master Control watch with the sector dial. Can't find many out there and less information. Was it a limited edition. That is one beautiful watch. Blue hands. Silver dial. Gold rotor on back. I want one. Need a review.
That was a super interesting video. I knew some of those, but far from all. I also was amused at your impersonation of how Americans pronounce things 😂
Sven, I’ve always dressed vintage but in a more casual way. Lots of jeans and Eisenhower jackets. However I want to start wearing pleaded pants and collar shirts. Where can I begin?
