Question, I’m trying to use a XLR condenser mic with the Mackey 48 in the field to do some wildlife recording but the 48 sucks up at 9 V like it’s nobody’s business can I use a 12 V battery and wire it that way for phantom power? If not, what would you do?
I am a bit worried that you have not taken into account the voltage, usually a couple of volts, produced by the F2 that powers the lavalier mic. Be careful as you may damage some of your gear.
Ha. These guys used to pretend they were gangsters from Compton so much. These days, they still let the fake poser slang slip here and there. Ha, We will always know them. They can never hide.
Top man, I just did this set up last night with athe same kit one thing i need is that 3d mount i was think how can i mount it ...Lucky i have a 3d printer thanks for sharing, i do have the tascam X8 and the zoom podtrak 4, but i have an XLR mic with a battery and i plugged it in and it worked.
Another nice piece of kit is the B&H IndiPRO Tools Dual LP-E6 Power Grid & XLR Audio Box. Cheap. dummy battery for np-fw50 (sony) and 2 xlr ports. two adapter from xlr to a 3.5 mini stero. $80USD. I've been looking at the F3 but the F2 with the battery box is cheap and flexible as heck.
So what's the quietest recorder with little internal feedback sound for my dynamic mic for studio recording. I'm making low volume meditation videos. What about the Zoom H3?
Hi, am I right in saying that if I had 3 zoom f2bt's and 3 old cheap smartphones, I could have control of all the recorders (one app for each f2) I coud 3d print a mount to hold all 3 phones as one unit :)
3:30 How cool is that device, I did not know that something like M48, 48V Phantom Power Supply existed. I can now add XLR to my SONY PCM D100. One drawback, it's bulky, and I do not like very much those 9V batteries. Are there alternatives that are smaller? Awesome video, a second one I watch on your channel. Videos very to the point, subscribed ;)
Yes, great informative video. Even though I have been an audio engineer for over 30 years, the "one-man-show" you speak of, we both are needing this 32bitFloat so I/we can be immersed and totally focused on our dialog in the video.
The input on the F2 supplies 2.5V. So any condenser microphone that needs that amount of voltage can be plugged into the F2. Plugging any dynamic microphone into the F2 to take advantage of 32bit float recording is not going to work because of the 2.5V input...not because the F2 doesn't have enough gain to supply low output dynamic mics. *unless you want noise in your recording, welp...you demoed that part
Thank you for your time and valuable videos! I can see in this video that the noise is almost inexistent and I wonder why, versus your other video. My guess is that noise was induced by your computer audio out interface. Since Deity D3 is self powered, recording to Zoom F2 should produce no noise, as in this phantom powered scenario, where the self is almost inexistent. How come you didn't tested the F2 with Deity D3? :)
Excellent video Paul! I know absolutely nothing about audio recording but I would like to be able to capture the ambient sounds in the streets and markets of Thailand. Could this rig be configured to accommodate binaural recording? Thanks Paul.
I've never used the Polsen, so I can't say for sure. But it would be cheaper to just use an adapter cable like I did with the dynamic mic test in this video. Just be aware of that high noise floor when using dynamics with the F2.
The M48 is big, so the size advantage of the F2 is lost. In the past, I have used a Countryman B2D with a Zoom H5, which is about the size of the M48 and F2 combined. I strapped the H5 to the talent's back. the B2D is a cardioid, suitable for noisy locations. I would like to see a 48V adapter that is much smaller.
Hello, thank you for posting this type of video. It’s definitely gonna help me with my current set up. I just had a quick question, with the zoom f2 connected to the Mackie. Do you think you would you be able to record a sound board at a wedding? Although I know that the f2 is not really made for that on its own
You could certainly record from a sound board with the F2. Although I wouldn't even bother with the M48 unless XLR is the only option. You could probably just get a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter cable and record directly from one of the headphone jacks on the sound board. That's how I recorded sound boards on the Zoom H1 when I've filmed weddings.
Unfortunately, the answer is no. You can record the F4 output into the Zoom F2, but you will not see the benefits of 32bit float. Since the audio would pass through the preamps of the F4 before it reaches the F2, if the signal peaks in the F4, it will still be peaked in the F2.
iRig PRE 2 is $50 provide 3.5mm output from 1 XLR input with phantom power. Cheap inline mic booster starts from $25 you could use phantom power to get 20-25db clean gain. If you don't absolutely need 32bit, plenty of cheap options offer battery powered phantom XLR and 24bit recording.
Yeah there are many cheaper options available for 24bit. This is just the cheapest option for 32bit in a field recorder at the moment. Thanks for the recommendations!
@@GearTestTVTech I found one even better suited for dynamic mic from great Ian Craig channel called FEL 3.5 inline micbooster. It uses only 3V power from 3.5mm jack to drive mini preamp for 20db of gain, no button no switches. Check it out if you are interested.
There are cheaper options if you don’t need 32-bit float. For example, the Tascam DR-10X is $30 cheaper, and you wouldn’t even need the 3D printed mount for the Mackie.
@@BigOlSmellyFlashlight Neither does the F2, although I suppose the DR-10X needs a mount of its own. I think I was assuming the Mackie unit had a 1/4”-20 mount.
Thanks for the video. So, what are my options if I want to use a dynamic mic? I am looking for a solution where I can give the mic to a moving person and attach a recorder directly to the mic.
The only two recorders I know of that attach directly to XLR mics are the Tascam DR-10X and the Deity HD-TX. They're not 32-bit, but they do have limiter options. I would expect the Deity to have better preamps than the Tascam, so it's probably your best option for dynamic mics.
The HD-TX seems a great and versatile option that will serve the purpose very well. Thanks for letting me know about it and looking to see your next video.
