As musicians, we're always making noise with our instruments. But there's a whole other world of sound that surrounds us all the time - and the talented Hayley Suviste is here to answer all your questions! Meg and Ria from PMTVUK join Hayley to discuss frequently asked questions such as what is field recording, how do you get started field recording, what skills you need to start field recording and so much more!
‪@hayleysuviste7237‬ is a sound artist and composer based in Manchester. Working across field recording, archival sound, electronic hardware and live instrumentation, Hayley uses her music to explore community and culture. Her work draws on first-hand oral histories and is made in close collaboration with those who can provide the most accurate document of their environment. Much of her music is immersed in the rural and urban narratives of her local Manchester, observing the city’s threatened natural spaces and our experiences preserving and polluting them.
In this video, PMTVUK presenters Meg and Ria are joined by Hayley as she takes them on a sound tour of Manchester's canals. They seek out any and every interesting sound they come across, and Hayley shares her expert advice on how best to capture audio in your immediate environment.
She reveals that anyone can start field recording - the only limit is your creativity! There are countless sounds around us that have musical qualities, and the potential to create interesting music, sound effects and soundscapes from them is truly endless.

I just loved this video. I’m about to launch my 2nd album based on field-recordings. I’m planning on a trilogy with sound from the Arctic and I’ve called it The Sonic Experience. I’m combining with saxophone and voice. Greetings from Norway 🏔️🎷🌊

This is a really great video and thanks for taking the time to do it! I have forgotten about my recorders of late - they have become neglected and dusty - and this has completely inspired me to get going again with capturing the sounds around me. Thank you! ❤

This video is a true inspiration! Really nice also that she mentioned the easy way to start recording with this app. I'll definitely check it out! But the gear she uses .... just WOW! Such a versatile recorder! And the results are stunning! Listened to it on my studioboxes.

Hands Down. The Zoom F3 is the best Field Recorder. It´s so compact, light with very fast start up time and no need to set gain, no clipping because 32Bit Float.

Interesting video. Been aware of this idea for some time. I was exposed to the UK band Test Department back in the day and know that peter gabriel has experimented with this concept in his early solo work (for use with the Fairlight). Others as well. Glad that this idea is still alive and well.

yea the DT770s are not open (even though imho they do a bad job at being closed) the dt990s are the open version of the same

Thanks, this was a cool video! I'm producing music and just getting started with field recording myself. I already have a Zoom H4n so I have a head start, but I thought the H6 looked very useful because one thing I lack is a direction microphone so the interchangeability seems like a big benefit. For now, I want to keep spending to a minimum - so I think the next purchases are going to be a shock mount and headphones. I also have a SOMA Ether, which is a device that picks up EM like the one that you used at the traffic lights. I'm not too sure how different it is, but it's certainly very enlightening to listen through it as you move through particularly an urban environment.

Thanks for making this video!! I’m from the States, & last summer I thought ‘well how cool would it be to bring my MacBook out & set up a session in Cubase & get the sound of the wind I this tree, right outside my house’… and now I don’t have to go that route if I don’t want to… I downloaded the app y’all mention in the video… the one from Rose.

I don't know about beyerdynamic cause I never had those but I had Sennheiser HD280 and they are really CLOSED and isolate so you can only hear what is coming through the mic. She is using fluffy ear pads so I guess they are kind of open sound in them and I can appreciate the opinion that open or semi open headphones can be useful. A mix of ambient sound and microphone sound can be fun and it does not matter if they leak from the earpads or from the back, it is still open or semi open sound. Interesting point cause I like my closed but leaky Fostex T40RP headphones. It's kind of different and a bit less pro style than HD280PRO but kind of fun to don't really know if the sound comes from the mic or from the leaky ear pads...

have you tried taping the contact mic to a glass cup with some water in it, dip the tip of your finger in the water then rubbing the glass cup with soaked finger? does that work? how does it sound????

Field sound is so beautiful but some sounds in this video are not really themself sound. They are transformation from one form of energy to the sound (another form of energy). However, depends on your definition of field sound, field sound is interesting. Thank you to your team.

HUummm I have tried to find a shock mount for my tripod and failed. I have tried to find a contact microphone but only found ones made for instruments, are these the same thing? Can someone please point me in the right direction?

The best and most expensive are from Rycote and that is what she is also using. Then cheaper ones but as good are from Rode. But you can buy no brand from amazon at a fraction of the price and they are still usable.

Will one day we recorded most or enough of all the sounds and we can all just generate from AI and don't need to physically do field recording anymore? But even now is it still make sense to record it yourself and not just get what's already done on the internet, do there still much to record given so many field recording already done, or it is a way to have original stuff and to prevent copyright strike? And why can't AI or software able to generate whatever sound we want yet, or there are but just record and modify is easier than create from blank state?
@KerythDraws
@KerythDraws 5 месяцев назад
Because AI doesn't work that way. It can only rearrange what you put into it. The different natural combinations of sound in reality are basically infinite. Also the point of designing a soundscape is personal expression which a machine is incapable of.
@jannisbmrt
@jannisbmrt 3 месяца назад
But where's the fun in that. You also wouldn't have any personal connections to that sound.

Kinda lost me when she called the DT770 “Open back aerodynamic headphones”. Not only are they super closed back, they’re also chunky AF. They’re not bad headphones, just not portable and not open back. Honestly, you don’t want open back when field recording because it can mess with your monitoring. In-ears are also a good option.
