The best justification I have seen for the .327. If I could find a good supply of ammo I would purchase a Ruger .327.

Bought Rugar LCR in 327 federal magnum in 2018. Have not had an issue with finding ammunition in East central Missouri. It helps that it will fire 4 different types of the 32 caliber family.

Ammo manufacturers claim they won't make more ammo because the gun manufacturers don't make enough guns. Guess what the gun makers claim!!! The 32s are reloaders' cartridges until one or both of the ignoramuses wakes up!!

But it still has a 3” or shorter barrel insufficient to expand 90%+ of 357 hollowpoints on the market. 4” 357 might as well just carry a smith K frame.

Another benefit of the 327 Federal is the variety of ammo one can use. I don't know if this is a benefit that you assumed, but I think it needs to be stated. One can fire 32 short, 32 long, H&R mag and 327 Federal. For me, that means I can practice ad absurdum with 32 long and H&R mag ammo, then with 327 "for effect." I like that flexibility. That ability to fire a variety of ammo also helps to some degree to address the ammo shortage issue. Where I live, 32 long and H&R mag are readily available, hence good for extended practice.

I pick up brass at my local shooting range and noticed 327 fed mag brass tends to split a lot more often on the first firing than any other caliber I've seen before. That's one reason why I haven't bothered getting into 327 fed mag. I think 357 mag with a 4" or longer barrel makes more sense. If I want anything smaller I'll go with 9mm or 380 acp.
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 5 лет назад
Prepare2Survive That’s strange. I have over a thousand pieces of .327 brass that have 1-5+ firings and not a single one has ever split. I expect some splits somewhere after the 7th reload when the brass gets brittle. You might be picking up people’s trash brass they leave behind when it does split.
@Prepare2Survive
@Prepare2Survive 5 лет назад
@@HughesEnterprises I already know all the reloaders at my range and none of them reload 327 mag. Maybe someone has a 327 fed mag revolver that has an out of spec chamber that's allowing the casings to split open when fired in that gun. Thanks for letting me know your brass lasts a decent amount of reloads. Maybe I'll consider getting into reloading that caliber. I already have a couple 32 cal handgun lee bullet molds I've been experimenting with for low power 300 blk.

Speer discontinued them years ago. Maybe if enough of us contact Hornady and tell them we want a 115 grain .32 XTP bullet, they'll make one. I mean, if they're willing to make 85 and 100 grainers, no reason not to offer a 115 that would also work wonders in other .32's like the .32-20

They never should have discontinued the 115gr Gold dots. Could have been great in those Ruger 'Single actions' or the Henry rifle. 9mm starts at 115gr. Yet the best SD box, bullet, for the .327 gets dismissed. Ever heard about some guy shot a deer or something with .22 rimfire..? Great! I don't hunt. But in many states there is a minimal diameter deer size. 30/30 is 'the deer caliber'. .30 Caliber carbine is overlooked (that's a good home defense, urban caliber).

That's probably an ideal powder as well for a 2" barrel. Pressures are surely high, but I imagine very low recoil and low flash. 1499fps is the highest reading I've seen so far and that's with an 85gr bullet and 3" barrel with a stout charge of titegroup. I'm working on some compressed H110 loads that will hopefully break the 1500fps barrier with the 100gr bullets in a 3". Should be at least 2500fps out of my 20" Henry. Once I pick up a 125/130gr mold I'm going to try and push a hard cast gas check bullet to 2300fps in the rifle. Duplicate 7.62x39/.300 Blackout loads.

The more videos I watch on 327 Fed Mag the more I think I'm going to load cast bullets in mine when it comes in. The first two expanded so much they didn't penetrate. And the third penetrated, expanded enough, but I'd like to see a 5 x 5 drill with that load. I'm wondering if a hot H&R mag might bridge the gap, but I haven't seen any HP's expanded beyond their copper jacket peeling back... Anyway, great video and subbed.
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 4 года назад
If you check out one of my later videos I shot factory 85gr loads through a Paul Harrel style meat target. I thought the penetration was enough. But I wouldn’t hesitate to carry a 100-130gr Keith SWC or even a 100gr full wadcutter at moderate velocity if you’re not concerned with overpenetration. There are still some Speer Gold Dots floating around that are supposed to be the best HP available for the caliber but they’re rare and $$$. I have a couple boxes but haven’t tried them yet,
@pacanis

@@HughesEnterprises I'll look for that other video. And not that I would want to be hit with one, but that first bullet didn't even make it through three jugs with no barrier to penetrate first. Out of a 3" barrel. You might as well have been shooting S&W longs. IMO :)

@Munky332

My real question, is how does it stack up for recoil, relative to 38spl and/or 38spl+P? I have no doubt that I could find a load that would be adequate in terminal ballistics in either loads, the thing that has me curious is recoil. I'm somewhat familiar with 38spl and +P loads in S&W airweights and LCRs, and have been contemplating either an LCRx snub in either 38spl or 327. The 327 gets the nod for capacity, but the 38spl gets a nod for weight (about 4oz less unloaded). The 327 LCRx for some reason weighs the same as the 357 variant (maybe due to pressure they used more steel? cartridge length? or due to the smaller bullet diameter the barrel is a tad thicker?)
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 4 года назад
If you can handle 38+p in an airweight, 327 in a steel gun is no problem. 327 in an LCR is a handful with the AE 100gr. If I was going to carry a LCRx it would be the 327 with the Federal 85gr low recoil. Less recoil than 38 +p and better ballistics on paper and more reliable expansion. Gold dots or Underwood or AE 100gr may take some practice to shoot well in that light of a gun but are going to be way more manageable than a .357 in the same gun. Another option are the hot 100gr .32 H&R. LCR in .327 weighs the same as the 357 because of the beefed up frame for high pressure. You’ll want the weight for the hot stuff.
@johnnyvasquez4605
@johnnyvasquez4605 6 лет назад
This is a really good cartridge. I will buy an LCR in it most likely... it's on par and exceeds 9mm . As for 357 no its still has a ways to go. Even in Paul Harrells vids 357 is getting 1200+ velocities with 125 gr... never the less this is an outstanding cartridge .. right now I carry Underwood in my SP101 ... it's labled at 1500 fps out of this gun.

Johnny Gunz Man, that underwood ammo must be punishing to shoot. I tried some like that in a S&W model 60 and I bruised my knuckle even with a very tight grip. If you're interested in Paul Harrel check out Chapter 5. I shoot a meat target with the .327 and the results are pretty impressive.

As people should know, velocity isn't the end-all be-all in cartridges, rifle or handgun. If it was, you could sling a 100gr slug down range with energy exceeding a .50 BMG so long as it going fast enough. Impact performance is a multi-faceted science. In some cases, a slower and heavier bullet is more effective than a faster lighter one, for example. The energy charts are a nice starting place, but they aren't any ending place.
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 5 лет назад
Lifted_Above Velocity isn’t everything but it sure does help in promoting rapid reliable expansion with under .40cal bullet diameters with small hollow point cavities. When I don’t carry a .327 I carry a .45 with 230gr Ranger-T’s or a .44 Mag with slow WFN cast bullets. When you’re already carrying a small caliber the best chance you’ve got to try and cause the same wounding effect as a larger diameter caliber is to get that bullet moving as fast as possible with a bullet alloy that can handle the speed.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 5 лет назад
Quite true. You actually carry .44mag? What platform, may I ask?
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 5 лет назад
Lifted_Above S&W 629. I have three of them in various barrel lengths. 6” in a shoulder rig if a belt holster is impractical or if I’m concealing it under a big coat. 4” in a OWB belt holster. Still looking for a decent IWB pancake rig for the 4”. Concealed carry is difficult but possible if you dress around the gun. My carry .45 is a full size HK USP, so no small gun either. I am a proponent of the “carry the biggest gun you possibly can” philosophy.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 5 лет назад
Yeah. I personally don't yet have CC. It's the direction I'm going however. Personally I'm a fan of the .38 Special variants, up to .357mag. I'd be looking for something in a J-frame or SP101 size, but I personally feel K/L or GP100 to be a tad bulky for a nice concealment option. This of course is only speaking from my exposure to these actual guns and my body type. It's a very good idea to put a lot of rounds through whatever someone carries to get very familiar with it and build muscle memory. But my main fun guns wouldn't be for carry so I for me personally, I'm not going to buy whatever I have to try to make work for bears, squirrels, dinosaurs, and two-legged predators.
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 5 лет назад
Lifted_Above If you feel the GP100 is a little too big look for a Smith K frame in .357. I have a Smith model 13 that’s really nice. They’re still making the model 19 and 66 if you want a new one. A 2.75” model 66 would be a great option for a medium size concealed carry. The new round butt guns are barely any bigger than an SP101 plus you’ll get all six rounds in the cylinder rather than five.

I hear that hodgdon. Makes a perfect powder for .327 it's called cfe pistol
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 6 лет назад
It does extremely well. My 85 and 100gr XTP carry ammo uses CFE pistol. No flash, mild recoil, very accurate, very clean burning, very high velocities while keeping pressure safe. However there is no substitute for playing the game of: "how much H110 can I pack into the case?" in terms of squeezing every bit of velocity in longer barrels. The trade off is monstrous muzzle blast and flash making it only useful for fun and for use in rifles.

Thank you for making these great videos! I am seriously considering the 3" Sp101. My only concern is the fixed sights. I would only be using 32 H&R mag and 327 in it. Do you notice any difference in point of impact between the two cartridges? I can't seem to find any info about this.
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 4 года назад
There is some difference, it all depends on the weight of the bullet and velocity. Within 10 yards it’s not enough of a difference to make a difference. You’ll see similar shifts in point of impact just shooting different brands of ammo. If you’re shooting for 1-2” groups at 25 yards you’ll definitely want some form of adjustable sight but that’s true for any gun/caliber. There’s always Kentucky windage/elevation too.

At least two; likely up to four. One coving these 85gr defense loads in Chapter 3. The detailed process uploaded as an extra. And one covering the complete process loading some 95gr cast target loads in Chapter 4. When I am able to reliably source 100gr XTP’s I will also develop a load with those. I will also be loading XTP’s and Cast in .32H&R brass and pressures and making a video on that.

i noticed that the buffalo bore 357 load you showed was the low recoil low flash version..not what people think of when they hear buf bore. the real stuff out of the 3" has a mv of 1475 yielding over 600fpe. ymmv its kinda ludicrous to assert that the 327 is on par with the 357 in power, it just isn't so. in standard length revolvers (5-7") the difference is even more pronounced. personally, if i had to carry a snubbie it would be an alaskan in 44, which can be loaded with lighter 44spc up to full power mags. far more versatile
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 6 лет назад
It’s only fair to compare apples to apples. 3” barrels with 3” barrels. 100gr bullets with 110gr and 125gr bullets. In that respect they are ballistic equals. Outside of that the .357 is far more powerful. Plus most people don’t carry buffalo bore anyway. They’ll have Rem/Win/Fed ammo made for 8” revolvers that won’t even expand at the abysmal velocities they will get in a snubby.
@boedude8496
@boedude8496 6 лет назад
@@HughesEnterprises i was mentioning that buf bore has two 125gr loads, and the one that more common one is much more powerful. as far as apples to apples, this is a caliber debate not a specific bullet weight debate. the capabilities of the caliber include bullet weight, power limits, etc. because one is limited does not require the other to follow the same limitations. that is not apples to the other caliber
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 6 лет назад
+boedude More powerful isn’t always better. Everything’s a trade off. And with J-Frame size snubbies I contend that the .327 is superior in that it is a sufficiently powerful cartridge for the purpose, has very manageable recoil vs the .357, and extra round vs the .357. Also I didn’t create an exhaustive list of all ammo options for both calibers. I simply chose those that were most closely comparable to the .327.
@boedude8496
@boedude8496 6 лет назад
@@HughesEnterprises within a narrow set of parameters it could be an acceptable alternative for some. and no, power isnt everything but i am very hesitant to throw so much of it away, for only one round. my first and still favorite is the 44 so recoil is not an issue
@emiliochavez5121
@emiliochavez5121 5 лет назад
I’d say you did a good job comparing. Obviously the .357 has greater power potential in some configurations. I carry .357 and I am full sized so reduced recoil is not of much appeal, however an extra round in the wheel is very appealing, and as you demonstrated the .327 is PLENTY powerful for self defense. I am considering an LCR in .327 magnum... my biggest hesitation is ammo availability, and price.

Highly interesting since I'm a .327 fan/owner. Handloading is off the table for me at this time. However as you seem to have delved into the subject AND are a .327 enthusiast, what's your take on a solid copper like a Barnes TAC-XP for this caliber? Have you tried loading some for comparison? And do you think expansion suffers too much from a shorter barrel like the LCR? Look forward to following the rest of this series. Cheers.
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 6 лет назад
Randy Souse-Git Don't have any first hand experience with Barnes in this caliber but I will try them out. They don't seem to sell that bullet to the general public for reloading either. As far as the .327 in the 2" LCR, you're probably going to lose about 100-150 fps. However environmental conditions can have beneficial or detrimental effects on performance too. The factory loads I shot here chronographed 150fps less than advertised because they were fired in a cold 45 degree gun and it's 45 degrees outside however they still expanded and penetrated well. I would assume they would perform similarly or better with the LCR at body temperature ~90 degrees and it a bit warmer outside. That hydra-shook sure looks like it would perform even at lower velocity. The XTP handload definitely would because the bullet is designed to start expanding at just 850 FPS. Black Hills makes a factory .32H&R load with the XTP that does 1200fps in a 2" barrel Smith. I'll be doing some comparisons with full power 32H&R mag loads in the 3" as well with some different bullet types so that should be somewhat similar to .327 in a 2". The key to expansion though is velocity. The fastest bullet you can push through a snub nose will probably be the most reliable expander. Anyway thanks for watching and feel free to ask questions.
@randysouse-git531
@randysouse-git531 6 лет назад
Thanks for the quick reply. Due to where I can shoot, I can't send downrange to objects other than paper so I'm using a lot of supposition when choosing loads. I appreciate you showing some real world effects for this caliber. I do understand the 1.87" barrel will compromise speed so I need to shoot "hot" if I can. Yeah, 95 gr Hydra-Shok is my first choice in .327, with 85 gr America Eagle JSP as a second. For .32 H&R I have settled for a 95 gr hard cast semi wadcutter (Federal Champion) and a 98 gr semi-jacketed hollow point in .32 S&W Long (Magtech). Of course these are off the shelf loads selected after some considerable shuffling through available choices. I do look for "sizzle" when comparison shopping, but of course the round has to be manageable out of the light weight LCR for twelve consecutive shots to pass my personal criteria. I'd rather be able to shoot a few rounds well placed rapidly rather than counting on one or two big booms spaced out further over time like Speer Gold Dot or heavier AE loads seem to demand from a 17 ounce snubbie. Double Tap does offer a sold copper Barnes in both .327 and .32 H&R. I'm thinking of giving them a go. I'll have to try the Black Hills XTP as well. Again, thanks for the fascinating look. You are definitely covering lightly trodden ground that needs your in-depth examination. Eagerly awaiting the next chapter.
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 6 лет назад
+Randy Souse-Git Definitely check out that Black Hills .32H&R. It is pretty expensive but totally worth it if you don’t or can’t reload XTP’s yourself. It is moving fast but shoots like a .22LR in my steel guns. Georgia Arms also loads a hot .32H&R XTP in 100gr which may be worth checking out.

A little follow up for future readers. Remember I'm using the lightweight Ruger LCR in .327 Federal. I've got some Buffalo Bore on order. The .32 H&R Magnum, 130gr, Hard Cast Keith. Those hit as hard (365 ft/lbs) as the Federal .327, 85gr Hydra-Shok or the American Eagle .327, 85gr Jacketed Soft Point (370 ft/lbs each). I plan on trying the Buff Bore .327, 100gr JHP as well. Those are pretty hot at 467 ft/lbs and they may be a bit "stiff" out of the light weight snubbie. Never know till you try. I've shot stiffer (500+ ft/lbs), but it's just not comfortable for fast follow ups and multiple shots out of a 17 ounce gun. I did touch on my worries about ensuring expansion producing velocities from the short 1.87" barrel. Today I had a chance to test fire into some water filled jugs. Magtech makes a .32 S&W Long that is 98gr Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point. Out of a 4" test barrel they clock 778 ft/sec for 132 ft/lbs at the muzzle. I shot from approx. 10 yards. With the LCR I had penetration to the second and third jug (I tried to shoot fast before the first jug drained, but may have hit air in jug 1 after shot 1). The two rounds I recovered mushroomed very nicely. So I think I'll stop worrying about a hotter JHP not expanding through the short LCR barrel. :-)

Very informative! In terms of recoil, how would you compare the .32 H & R Magnum vs. .327 Mag in the LCR?
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 6 лет назад
I've never personally fired an LCR in .327, but based on the Ruger SP101 and S&W 632 the recoil of the 85gr .327 is maybe 20-30% more and the 100gr is 40-50% more VS the Black Hills .32 H&R 100gr XTP In the steel guns the recoil is very manageable it is just MUCH louder than .32 H&R. .32H&R is quieter than .38SPL, so you may be surprised and develop a flinch if it takes you by surprise if you start out shooting .32's and switch to .327's. Shoot the .327's first so you get used to them, then switch to .32's. Wear both plugs and muffs if you shoot indoors. The .327 in a snubby is about the same, maybe a little quieter than a .357 mag in a 6" barrel. It's not a sharp recoil either like a .40S&W or .357 Sig in a compact auto or .380 in a light subcompact Ruger LCP. It has more of the recoil impulse of a hot .38SPL in a Smith model 10 or similar duty revolver. The noise makes the recoil seem worse than it is. I have also heard from other viewers that the 100gr American Eagle and Speer 115gr(discontinued) are a handful in the LCR but the 85gr loads are perfectly fine. The only way to know for sure is to go shoot one.

G Just based on bullet construction (identical except for weight) and real world velocities the 100gr is moving faster and should give better opportunity for expansion. I hope to have a test showing the comparison up in the next couple weeks I just very busy right now starting a new career.

I love the .38 special with proper loads. But what I dont like is that gun manufacturers insist on giving us only 5 shots for all .38 snub noses these days. I'd like a 6 or 7 shot snub nose rated for up to +P+ (just because i really want it to be able to go through +P without wear and tear) and give it a good 2.75" barrel with a high visibility front night sight! I just dont want to spend more than like $500 for it though....

Still got the data before it freaked out. It’s already been shot too so I wouldn’t mind if I had to upgrade to a better one.

The chrono on the table was just a decorative ornament. Bouncing around when the jugs are hit can't be helping it out either. Don't think I've seen someone put it on the same platform as the media that is being hit by the round.

What was your powder and load for the XTP hand loads? Fast or slow powder, etc.?
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 6 лет назад
Jay Warren Clark I will have that video uploaded late this evening. It was 7.5gr of CFE Pistol. Very similar in properties to Power Pistol or Autocomp but is flash suppressed. I tried Titegroup, H110, HP-38, and Power Pistol with this bullet but it did not produce the velocities I wanted and H110/ Power Pistol had too large of a fireball along with low velocities and high pressure.

Hughes Enterprises m: Thanks. I use 11.5 grains of H110 in my .32 H & R Magnum in both my Ruger Vaquero and my 20” Marlin Cowboy. There are no pressure problems and in pistol and rifle I get 1153/295 & 1667/620 FPE. This is pretty good but I am looking forward to a big leap in velocity and energy when I receive the guns in .327. The stats published on line are pretty impressive. I use the H110 because I want to exploit the long rifle barrel. I am expecting to get 2000 + FPS from the rifle! Thanks for the reply! JWC

@HughesEnterprises 6 лет назад
+Jay Warren Clark Oh yeah, you definitely want to use H110 for longer barrel guns. Just not enough barrel on an SP101 to take advantage of the powder. This CFE load usually chronographs around 1350-1400fps. We were a little slower today because it 40 degrees outside and the gun and ammo were also very cold. It should be very easy to push a 100gr XTP to 2,000fps in a rifle with H110. I’m doing testing now for chapter 5 and will be comparing the CFE pistol to H110 in 3” barrel guns with 100gr XTP’s. I’m hoping to get close to 1,400-1,450 fps out of the snub nose. Once I break down and drop the cash on a new Henry there will be additional chapters testing velocities out of a rifle. Thanks for watching!

I get 2241fps with American Eagle factory .327 100gr JSP in my 20" Marlin (Ranger Point Precision did a great job). 1600fps in a 4 5/8" Single Seven. Bullets and molds in 71, 85, 95, 122gr and 133gr Keith SWC mold I have yet to try out. I handload for over 30 calibers, but the .327 is what I shoot the most. The Single Six in .32H&R was the gateway gun. Now I have three S7s, the Marlin, and Single Six Magnum .32. I suppose the LCRx is next....327 Federal Magnum, the most versatile, maligned, and under-rated cartridge in American history. And all of this on a .22 frame revolver.

Blond Bowler What's your preferred powder for the .327? I've been using CFE pistol with good success with jacketed, and also Titegroup with cast 90gr SWC's. Anything I have tested has printed better than 2" at 25 yards. Right now I'm exploring H110/Enforcer/2400 for really hot Magnum loads that will also produce high velocities in a rifle. I have a 20" Henry Big Boy in the mail right now and want to get the most out of that longer tube.

1st, Snub Nose doesn't exist NEW anymore. With that in mind, a very misleading video. 2nd, 100 gr JSP, even on-line, rare as hens teeth and very expensive. Hollow points are a waste of money/effect on game and self defense. Hollow points used as self defense will have you spending time in prison regardless of your justification for defending yourself. Ask any lawyer.
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 4 года назад
First, yes, it does in several varieties. Ruger LCR/LCRx, SP101, and Freedom Arms custom order. Pre-Pandemic, SGAmmo had over 50 cases of the 100gr softpoint available. I know because I just bought some. As did graf and sons, lucky gunner, and others. Everybody’s sold out of everything now. And for the final point, hollowpoints have been used by police and civilians for regular everyday legal defensive use for well over 40 years now. If the shooting was justified no prosecutor is checking out your ammo unless it’s some novelty RIP super exploder nonsense. It’s not the 1980’s anymore. It would be very uncommon to NOT carry hollowpoint ammo for defense. Maybe you should find some lawyers that aren’t anti-gun. Hunting is a different matter entirely especially with .327.

I like .327 and your relative energies chart is very cool but... you left out the hotter .357 loads. I don't understand the claim that "with the .327 you get equal or better muzzle energy than the .357". That's just not factually correct. Here's a .357 loading with 783 ft * lbs of energy. (www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=100) Even if that's a long test barrel it still massively outperforms any .327 load. The .327 is great, but it would be more accurate to say that it equals some of the lighter .357 loads with smaller bullets.
@HughesEnterprises

Comparing different calibers is always an apples to oranges comparison. What I did was select energy levels of cartridges tested in 3” barrels only., specifically Ruger SP101’s. Believe it or not the 357 loads I included were the hottest loads I found with 110 and 125 gr bullets that’s why you see CorBon and Buffalo Bore, and not Remington. The 3” barrel just kills the 357’s velocity. The 158gr loads I left out because the muzzle energy wasn’t much different in the short barrel and it’s a stretch to compare muzzle energies when the 158’s are so much heavier than 85 or 100 gr loads.

How would you rank the 327 mag for loudness compared to 9, 40, 10, 357, 45?
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 5 лет назад
A .327 in a 3” barrel is as loud as a .357 Mag or hot compensated 10mm in a 3-4” barrel. If you shoot outdoors it isn’t too bad at all but you’ll definitely wake up the guys next door in an indoor range. It has more of a crack than a boom.

A solution in search of the problem. You are delusional if you think the smaller caliber is equal to .357 magnum ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iiKGAvXtpVQ.html and 580 ft lbs out of a 4 inch barrel

@HughesEnterprises 6 лет назад
There are some .327 loads equivalent to some .357 loads. Of course the .357 has the potential to be more powerful in any barrel length over 3”. It has way more powder capacity. What the .357 can’t do is fit six rounds in a J frame revolver or get 400+ foot pounds of energy with a bullet of equivalent sectional density from a 3” or shorter barrel along with mild recoil.

I'm not sure I'd call your handload "the most effective round", certainly the cheapest to procure, but empirically, not the most effective. I would be concerned about pass through penetration given how many water jugs it went through, and when the shape of the round and its dimensions are considered, the Hydra-shok and even the Soft Point exceed it in all areas. For a defensive load, I would never use handloads, no matter how nuclear or "effective" they might be.
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 6 лет назад
Check out Chapter 5. Water jugs don’t tell the whole story. Effectiveness in this case was based solely on muzzle energy numbers and as shown in Chapter 5 there is almost zero discernible difference in wounding capability between the Hydra-Shock and the XTP handload even though on paper the reload is far more powerful. The XTP did fragment more leading to additional wound tracks from lead fragments, but the Hydra-Shock produced similar bone fragmentation. As far as carrying reloads, I trust that my loads are just as reliable as factory produced ammo. I reload 10K+ rounds a year on a single stage press and have never had a dud or any ammunition failure. I’ve been doing this for seven years now at that volume. I use off the shelf normal components and my carry ammo is within ‘book’ specifications. I am able to practice regularly with my everyday carry ammo and rotate it out and shoot it at least monthly.
@kfeltenberger
@kfeltenberger 6 лет назад
My concern with reloads isn't reliability, in this day and age a mildly competent reloader should be able to make reliable rounds and someone well experienced should see no issues. Rather, my issue is with the aftermath of a shooting. Reloads are just that, a home cooked recipe that can not be independently validated by a forensics lab to compare them to what you fired in self defense. Every manufacturer holds back examples from each lot so that if testing needs to be done in the aftermath of a shooting, the lab can get test ammo for a baseline to compare against the evidence collected. Mostly this is for gunshot residue to confirm ranges and such. In the end, it's one more issue that will have to be overcome at a trial, criminal or civil, and it isn't an issue that I'm willing to trade potentially thousands of extra dollars (and potential jail time) to save a buck or two for carry ammo. YMMV.
