OUTRAGEOUS comment from fan, Can He Back Up His Claim? (22 and 710 yards)

During our how far is 22 deadly video a fan commented and stated that us having troubles hitting the target at 500 were ridiculous and that he regularly shot soda cans at 710 yards with a Ruger 10/22 using Winchester 22lr ammunition. This seemed like an insane claim so we invited him to prove it.

-The Ballad of .22 Man Fellows, do gather and bend me an ear Hearken this legend that happened quite near; In the Idaho hills, as Winter expired 'Twas first told to Michael, a warrior retired From the lips of a Hero, this legend was told And never heard Michael a claim quite so bold Of nerve, and of skill, and small metal can That attracted the wrath of this sharp-sighted man As he gazed from his porch, just outside his front door, He noted the yardage, "Thirty-five-and-half-score." Then to arms did he go, as all good heroes do His hands, they were steady, his aim, it was true Though his weapon was small, some say almost a toy He chuckled, "Perhaps... In the hands of a boy." He pointed, calling out to his quivering foe, "You've awakened my wrath, and down you shall go!" Then swiftly and smartly, he pointed his gun, On account of the range, somewhere close to the sun He fired his shot, it rang out like a bell And he knew that he'd punched his foe's ticket to Hell To the maidens he turned, with a smile and a wink, Then four seconds later... a small metal *TINK!* And so ends the tale of that dastardly can And so goes the legend... of .22 Man

yeah- i can totally believe with a familiar gun over a familiar range with calm wind and younger eyes, he'd have that slight advantage to be able to pull it off given how well he did . there may also be an element of someone having said it was 710 yards back on the farm, but it was actually 690, I don't know if he actually measured it accurately that kinda thing, but shooting that kinda range as well as he did with a .22 is seriously impressive stuff.

Consider making that shot at a Coke can And no he didn't say Pepsi! From a kitchen chair off the railing of your West Texas front porch or a bench rest. A piece of grass dropped from shoulder height, would hit the ground at your toes. Dead still the air at 30% humidity and doing this day after day after day with your brothers. Through bricks and bricks of Winchester X 22 LR... Summers are long dry and hot where the great planes meet the southwest desert. I'd like to see him come back out and shot at a man sized target at 1500+ with like a .338 lapua (or something) like give him a better more consistent tool and lets see how far he can ring that bell with whatever you guys think is the best tool for the job! I loved how you guys changed it up and put yourselves out there and that's how you grow and get new jokes and expand your tribe and I think thats great! I wish I had you guys as my friends (i know i sound a little sad) but I just think it would be a lot of fun and I could share and teach you guys a lot about a lot and visa versa! Instead I live around people who don't value knowledge and don't care to try to expand their horizons and push their limits. Oh did I tell you I hit two birds with one stone at a 1000 yrds? Yeah you wanna see me do it? You're not going to fly me out are you? Well at least bring .22 man back out! Yep. When I was in the Army, sometimes, when we'd be on the range, we'd ask each other: Would you stand at 500 meters and let Private Snuffy take one shot at you for $1,000? Sometimes, it would be a hard yes because that particular Joe simply couldn't shoot. But with others, you'd be like, 'Nope.' If I had to stand at 500 meters with this guy and a .22, that'd be a hard no. That can was 700 yards. I'm thinking he's going to hit a man sized target at 500 or less.

100% bullshit artist. The simple fact is, even with the best match grade ammo, 22lr isn't that accurate at distance. You can bolt the rifle down to the table and still have 4 FOOT groups at 700 yards. The round is too light and too slow to make it happen. The fact is, the dude conned them for a free vacation. When I was a kid back in the early 60s I would go spend a month in the summer on my Uncle's farm in Iowa. He had a one acre pond for holding irrigation water that was about a half mile from the house. Muskrats were a constant problem. In the evening after dinner we would go up on a balcony on the second floor and shoot an ancient single shot 22LR in the general direction of a muskrat on the pond. "Aiming" was accomplished by guessing at the barrel angle for drop compensation. Then, guessing at wind deflection, we used the vertical edges of the rear sight to figure out how far to hold left or right. When you are holding with even a whisper of a breez at that distance the "hold" for windage allowed you to see the target. Now, I admit that shooting at a moving muskrat a half mile away with a 22 that looked like it had been used as a tent peg was a fool's errand. But, it was a hoot with me and Tim doing the shooting and Uncle Russ spotting the shots over his every-evening-"two" beers and...every once in a great while... we hit ...the pond. when we turned twelve, Uncle Russ gave us our first master class in economics. He woud let us shoot his 220 Swift so long as we bought our own ammo. We quickly learned that the laughter involved in burning up an entire brick of 22s and MAYBE hitting the pond was worth far more than possibly scaring the crap out of a muskrat with 20 rounds of 220.

The very fact that he was even consistently close with a shot like that is enough in my book. Shooting irons with a .22lr gun you've never used before on a range you've never been to before on a windy day in front of people you look up to on camera for all the world to see would absolutely be difficult! What a shooter! I really hope he comes back on the channel!

After his first few shots, I honestly believe he did make these shots years ago. The fact he was able to land those first few shots that close to the target being in a different environment, wind and vision problems, tells me that he was quite a sharp shooter back in the days and his environment.

@@DSMattitude I think anywhere you shoot a lot, you get a better sense of the range, the wind behaviour, sightmarks etc. When I was a kid, my range was an old railway cutting on my grandfather's farm. So nice and level, berms either side and at the back. My cousins and I just got a feel for how everything worked in that location. Then trying to do the same thing on other ranges, I was often a lot less accurate. It's why I still love long range rifle shooting though because there's just so many factors to work into each shot.

Incredibly impressed with all aspects of the episode- the hype was built well, just the right amount or tech input, "22 Man"... PERFECT 10 and looked just about as I pictured which is kinda like you, me or our brothers-in-law x Micah and a half dozen John Doe's. Bottom line on this one?? One more in the W column for the good guys and even more importantly, GT's general operating funds account cuz with 4.5M views and climbing, paying for Double-Duece Hombre's plane ticket, hotel room incl. the raided mini-fridge, and 2 of the finest fully-toothed escorts that side of the Mississippi... there was still enough booty left in the kitty to fund another 1/4 year of fully-educational firearms-related shenanigans to keep even the most post-climactic crowd appeased! Thanks guys, much respect for everyone there showing and being shown respect, cuz that fella's is a rarity in this day and age, PEACE

Yep, I'm pretty sure with several kids, several 500-round bricks of ammunition, and infinite summer vacation time to just sit there plinking at the can forever, they hit it eventually. Probably several times. Possibly numerous times, depending on how persistent they were -- you know how kids can be. And only the high points remain in memory decades later. He may well be remembering 15 or 20 actual hits. While the 2,000 misses needed to get those have long faded out of recollection.

Hey big props to this guy, he got close. To his credit, not all 10/22s are equal off the shelf. i have one that is an absolute tack driver and two that are okay. Maybe his childhood one is a good one. Never tried 700 yards, but i have an early 1900s savage model 5, a beautiful bolt action .22 with a 23 inch barrel and a fixed 4 power on it. At 500 yards, i hit about 5/10 on a full size steel torso. They barely ding, you have to listen really hard. Also, they barely chip the paint off the torso, leaving no mark from that range. When you get up close you can see light skip marks and can really tell the rounds were coming in at a downward angle. About 21 feet of drop at that range great video, as usual
