My kids, all excited: "Mom! You must hear this new song, it is awesome." Me, singing along and getting a kick out of the confusion on their faces, then I play them the original or another version and sometimes they actually prefer the original.

I remember doing that as a kid in both the 70's and '80's. Every time my mum strolled out singing the words to what I thought was a brand new song, my jaw hit the ground! My mum must of had fun with us kids. She's been gone for about 2 1/2 yrs & I miss her everyday. All you guys who still have a Mum or Mom you love, tell her. Yeah, sometimes the cover can reinterpret the meaning of the song. For example, Aretha Franklin's cover of "Respect" reinterpreted the song from a misogynist expectation of his woman into an anthem for women power. Another example is Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt". After really listening to Cash's version, Trent Reznor said "It's not my song anymore."

Respect by Otis Redding is a particular favorite of mine. I had a college professor who loved Aretha Franklin's version and thought it was the original, written as a feminist anthem. When I pointed out that it was written by a man and originally meant to be from the point of view of a hard working man whose wife doesn't respect him, she about blew a gasket. (I love Aretha Franklin's version too, mind you.)

One of the more interesting covers is "Tainted Love", originally by Gloria Jones released in 1965, covered by Soft Cell in 1981, then by Marilyn Manson in 2001. I'm actually a huge fan of cover songs, particularly punk or rock covers of non-punk or non-rock songs. Compare "Turn Down for What" by DJ Snake and Lil Jon with the cover by Upon a Burning Body and Ice-T; or Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" by I Prevail. Also, a band called Our Last Night posts cover versions of songs on a weekly basis. Alex Melton does a great job of covering songs in different styles (and even sub-genres, like what if Angels and Airwaves wrote "Ocean Avenue" by Yellowcard).

Weird that they mentioned all the "You Raised Me Up" versions and didn't mention that the whole melody is lifted from "Danny Boy", lyrics written in 1913, which is a version of "Londonderry Air" which was found in a book published by the Society for the Preservation and Publication of the Melodies of Ireland in the 1855 book "The Ancient Music of Ireland", and that song is ancient, as the title suggests.

Don't now if you are old enough to remember George Harrison had problems with "My Sweet Lord" and He's So Fine" by the Chiffons it was alleged he copied the music. This actually went to court. He was charged with plagiarism and found guilty.

Most artists who don't write most, or any, of their material end up doing covers. Otherwise, you get the really good writers who cover a song to acknowledge the influence of a song, writer or performer on their careers, like Bowie's Pin Ups, which was a complete album of covers.

Many of the originasl were in 1927 and the 60's and the covers were much later. Some of us golden oldies remember the originals in the 60's. LOL.

Are you telling me Billy Ray couldn’t even come up with that piece of crap song on his own? Seriously, I hold that up as one of the stupidest and worst songs ever made and he was even covering it. Can’t sing, can’t write music... and I still had to hear that aggressive crap ear worm everywhere I went...

My biggest suprises ever: * "My Way" sung by Frank Sinatra * "Torn" sung by Natalie Imbruglia in 1998, originally by band Ednawapp * "Bailando" sung by Loona (originally by Paradiso) * "Nothing compares 2 u" sung by Sinead O'Connor, originally by the Family/Prince Elvis merely did own songs or songs written for him.
