I did this with opioids Only opioids until noon nothing else I was ambitious though so I didn't limit myself until noon I extended the challenge to all day every single day for the last decade where I refuse to eat anything before opioids

I read FIT FOR LIFE in 1990s and the take away I got from it was not to eat your carbs with protein! So it meant eating a hamburger without a bun -use lettuce instead! In regards to fruit it said it should be eaten alone to keep enzymes from disrupting others consumed during a meal. I remained pretty faithful to the principals, certainly created no harm. But since have become far more educated on regardless of these ‘dietary quirky habits’ a body can face auto immune illnesses. Today Regardless of your age, it is best to eat like an athlete and focus on the amount you consume of the three principal, Food macros: protein, fats and carbs. There is a great deal of information online on food, macros and various programs to consider interested in developing a dietary habits. But essentially your body benefits from having an essential amount of protein and healthy fats, and being very selective about your carbs, and keeping them at a lower amount, consuming green vegetables. Fruit is pretty much in the category of carbs, as it is generally has a lot of sugar and should be consumed sparingly. For centuries, fruit was consumed that was grown on trees, and in season only. Stores now import a lot of Exotic fruit and people should really be skeptical of it being handled properly and stored properly as it could contribute to unfriendly bacteria in their bodies. As a highly educated nation, we need to get away from slapping labels on diets I’m believing there are solutions for our health. We need to have proper legislation that prevents food and drug companies deceptive practices and offering prepared foods in boxes and packages galore that have ingredients that are not beneficial to the human cells. For basic guidance keep to purchasing food items with fewer ingredients listed; buy fresh vegetables and meat. Treat dairy food as a condiment. Don’t waste food, eat your leftovers and make soups. Stop snacking as a dietary practice and eliminate all processed sugars from your diet.🐓🐓🐓

My dad did this and his triglycerides were insanely high and caused a whole different health issue. Just because it’s good for one body doesn’t mean it’s good for EVERY body. Exercise caution and get regular blood tests.

@@VegetaPrinceOfSaiyans According to my doctor I need to avoid glucose spikes. I use a blood glucose monitor to make sure that the rise in glucose is not too high and comes down to base level with 2 hours after a meal.

I ate this way for over 10 years. I was fit had energy, and felt great. Got married and stopped doing it. Im now in my 60s and doing it again. I'm starting to feel great again.

One thing for all to consider. Jesse is an ultra marathon competitor. That level of sugar intake is useful SPECIFICALLY for him if he still does that type of cardiovascular training. If you are someone that does not exercise regularly, or are obese, you do not need all fruits before noon.

Oh my god! NO ONE EVER in the history of the world has ever died because they ate fruit till noon. Stop please. I’m so tired of people vilifying fruit. If every fat person followed this this advice their life would improve not get worse. Millions of people benefitted from this practice when the book came out. (Unless your diabetic or some other medical problem)

Natural Sugar in fruits is not the same as refined sugars in simple carbs not only that but fruits contains lots of nutrients like fiber, vitamin etc which is beneficial to the body

Thank you. I'm diabetic and if I only ate fruit until noon my glucose would spike so badly. I likely wouldn't feel well enough to do anything. I focus on protein and natural fats. I would LOVE to do this, and I love fruit, but the only ones that will not spike people with diabetes/insulin resistance are usually berries, and the amount of berries I would need to consume to hit any other macro goals would still leave me spiked :(

I learned something powerful a while back too. Never start your day with sugar. Start with protein and fats, not sugar. That helps me stabilize better. Obviously fruits is very different than pancakes and syrup, but eggs and avocado is also very different from bananas and oranges. Both concepts are much healthier than the typical American diet.

My natural honger starts later around 10-11 in the morning. If I eat right after I wake up, i am starving at 10. I now eat one fruit in the morning around 10. Then eat a big meal at 1pm with snacks. If I eat sugar after my lunch but before my dinner I feel weak and faint! So I snack salty nuts before dinner if I feel like eating. That is what works for me! I just try to notice and feel how my body reacts to food. :)

I read the book in early 2000s. Was abt 40 yrs old. Followed their diet religiously. Ate lots of fruits and only fruits for breakfast. Discovered I had fatty liver and pre-diabetes. Researched and found out that fruits contain fructose which is stored as fat in the liver. Now I’m 64 yrs old, eating mostly fatty meats and eggs and very low carb. And intermittent fasting. Very little fruits on occasion. I’m now metabolically healthy. No more fatty liver, not pre-diabetic anymore. As an alternative perspective to proper human diet, try listening to Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Anthony Chaffee, Dr. Jason Fung & Dr. Philip Ovadia. See if they make sense. They do, to me. 😊

Fruits nowadays aren't what they used to be. Animals that used to he able to consume fruit with no problems are now having issues arise with their teeth and getting fat. The fruit has changed.

How do you know that the fatty liver was not the result of what you ate/drank the rest of the day? Fructose in fruits is not very high, if you look at the total grams/how much you usually eat.

I think the biggest takeaway of these stories is that it doesn't hurt trying small changes like that. People are different and what works for one doesn't need to work for the other. Haven't heard about that one before. Definitely interesting. 👍

I did it as a teen. It's true. I had tons more energy but couldn't sustain it because, back then, I couldn't source all of the healthy foods. It should be much easier now.

Agreed. I would personally not be able to do this diet because I'm a bodybuilder and research indicates that it's best to have your biggest protein meal of the day in the morning for breakfast if the goal is to grow new muscle tissue. But the takeaway for me is to incorporate more fruit into my diet. I think it could be useful as fast carbs for a preworkout or post workout glycogen replenishment.

My mother read this book in the 90s. She did this diet in her late 30s and said it was the best she ever felt! She ended up falling off it and passed away of cancer at 53. She said when she was sick I wish I stuck to that diet.. fit for life. After she passed I found this book in 2006. It changed my life.. I’ve now been mostly eating this way for 20 years!

I was already pondering buying this book after seeing this video. Then after your comment, I definitely am buying this book. Your comment really hit me hard. I am 53 yrs old and maybe I still have time. I know that the way I am eating, I am on a path to illness. Thank you for sharing and so sorry about your mother. My mother also passed away young at the age of 55 from early onset Alzheimer’s. Wishing you health.

I used to do this too. It was ok for a good few years but I never felt grounded. Always felt high, developed hypoglycemia. I feel better at the moment with protein first thing in the am and more balanced meals overall

@@simsam133depends on genetics, wether you are active during morning, or have more sedentary job, can be many things. I usually do my cardio in the morning, so I will have water after I wake up then go for a run, have a protein shake with some frozen fruit, spinach and chia seeds. Then maybe have a banana hour or 2 before lunch. If you are less active during morning, too much carbs for breakfast may not be a good idea.

I do something similar. I don’t eat anything until 1pm, only fruits. I’ve been doing this since the late 90s, because I just don’t get hungry when I wake up and eating anything that early slows me down. I eat dinner around 5, which is typical anything I want. I never did this for health reasons, I just eat when I’m hungry and don’t when I’m not. I still can fit everything I wore in high school.

Wow, that's awesome. I don't eat anything until probably 2 or 3 pm because I don't ever get hungry. I usually have 1 banana or whatever fruit I have at home. However, as I got older I gained so much weight no matter if I exercised and eat almost nothing. 😢

Tried this for a couple weeks. Felt like hell most of the time and had to give it up when I started losing color and muscle mass. Guess it depends on genetics. I eat meat, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, fruit, and a spare few greens about 4 hours out of the day now. Healthy as an ox and about as strong as one.

I’ve been doing fruit for my first meal almost my entire entire life. I didn’t know it was a thing or that there was a book. I do it because regular breakfast make me feel nauseous. Fruit or fruit yogurt are the only things I can stomach in the morning.

🤔So basically how many hours after waking up? Mom read this in the mid '80s I think and we only had cantaloupe or melon til 2 hours before lunch and it really changed my energy. I was in grad school smoking , not sleeping living on pizza, coffee, chocolate and vending machine food. The diet forced me to eat lots of fresh fruit and veggies no meat and food combining I lost weight, was never hungry had incredible energy and a clear head. Made me want and succeed in quitting smoking. Wish I had kept doing the rest of my life I'd be so much healthier.

The way I remember it the diet was more then just fruit to noon. It was about specific food combining. Fruit was to be eaten alone, carbs and protein could not be combined. So they had you eat only fruit till 11:30 am. Then you allow at least 30 minutes for the fruit to digest, and around 12 pm you could eat carbs and veggies until 4 pm or so. Around 5 pm until bed you ate protein and veggies.

I did this in the seventh and eighth grade. I ran track, cross-country AND maintained straight A’s. I was never sick. It really does give you energy! Now I want to try this again.👍🏼

I am too. I read from this Bulgarian author Lidia something talking about fruit fasting and eating habits. Apparently the liver is in a state of detoxification till noon. So it's best to keep it light

I fast through the night into the day until 4.30pm (I drink water). I then eat until 10.30pm. I feel fantastic. I've done this for three years. At weekends I don't fast. On holidays, I don't fast. And, if there's a wedding or say, a family or business function I don't fast. I also love beer. When I'm fasting, I enjoy the feeling. When I'm eating I enjoy the feeling. Fasting is not for everyone. But, if you think you might like this then think about it. ❤

I’ve been intermittent fasting most days for about 3 years now. Always break my fast either at 3pm or 6pm with a hand full of blueberries, 1 kiwi, 1 apple or pear, all cut up on a bowl of Greek yogurt which has been mixed with grounded chia seed and a 2 chopped dates. Sprinkled with a sml handful of pumpkin seeds. Awesome! No going back! I then have my main meal about 9pm, a few occasional treats of organic chocolate, potato chips( mini bag) or a shortbread cookie all before midnight 😂. Then I don’t eat again until the following day at either 3 or 6pm . Feels great! I can’t go back to my old diet…..

@@PebbleBeachSouth Then eat a cheeseburger! Have some fries and a chocolate shake, too, if you want one! I’ve been intermittent fasting 19/5 for a year, and I’ve lost 29 pounds (26 to go). This works because I can have what I want! Most days I eat pretty healthy, and I try to make sure I get plenty of protein, vegetables, and fruit. I start my day with bacon or ham (uncurred) and eggs, and a Mexican Coke (real sugar)! For me, that’s key- I’ll fast all day if I can have a Coke every day! After lunch, I usually have a snack size candy bar or a small scoop of ice cream. What’s that you say? “Too much sugar?! Not healthy?!” Well, I eat WAY healthier now than I did before I started IF! Losing excess weight is the best thing you can do for your health, and my blood work has improved! The best plan is the one you can stick with! This is sustainable for me! When I try to cut carbs, it ends with a two week binge! This is healthier in long run! You have to eat for your soul as well as your body! Eat the cupcake!

I read this back in the day and used to eat the morning fruit until pregnant. Then I needed food that didn't digest so fast or I felt nauseated. High protein breakfasts helps me to keep my blood sugar stable.

Just an FYI for people who didn't read it, fruit is digested the fastest, meat is slowest. When there's meat, veggies, and fruit in the belly, the fruit, usually used as dessert, breaks down before the meat has cleared, creating gas and bloating.

The diet you state is the opposite of what a diabetic needs ffs… low fat has nothing to do with “treating diabetes”… eating only fruit for breakfast will not treat diabetes. That does not work. That advice is directly contrary to what would help a diabetic maintain normal blood sugars. Makes absolutely no sense.

i Have a good friend I turned this book on to back in 1988 and he has never deviated from it . He is in his late 60's now and his blood pressure , cholesterol and vitals are ideal to say the least . I personally lasted about 6 months on it

So I can tell it's not like 'eating fruits till noon'. Must've more info been provided. ​@@rory6984 it is worth the read. Basically after noon, you eat unlimited veggies with either a single serving of natural starch or a single serving of protein for lunch and dinner. All whole natural foods, with zero premade or additives. They offer one single "anything" meal per week. Like if you want stuffing, eat all the stuffing you want for that one meal, but notice how you feel after. You quickly realize what "anything meals" feel terrible. The concepts are solid. The only critique is that some of their recipes were a bit fussy, like one pita had a tablespoon of 5 different grated veggies and a complex sauce.

This book was a huge deal at the time. I did it (basically food combining) and was down to 118 lbs after four children. That’s high school thin. So much ch energy. My best friend started to give her 5 kids only fruit in the morning as well. They STILL eat that way and no one is fat. I still avoid anything but fruit in morning and never eat fruit with other foods. The book said you have a finite number of enzymes to digest food in your lifetime. You could have poor digestion in your older age So try to eat as much food with its own enzymes intact as you can. I have always did that as well. That couple deserved a lot of credit. I remember their Phil Donahue episode. So inspiring. Excellent video dude. Yay gen x who listened to him. ❤❤❤

Non sarcastic comment here: I read the book when i was 18 or 19. I'm so glad it was one of the first health books I ever read, because it really set a great foundation for how I approach food and health, and how I've structured my meals since then. That was almost twenty years ago. I still only ever eat fruit (also great time for fresh veggie juice or some kombucha) until noon. It still serves me so well!

@judyhowell7075 Personally, I don't drink coffee. Too acidic, and I grew up disliking how dependent on it people were, so I just never went down that road. I never wanted to live the "Don't talk to me until I've had my morning coffee" life. I don't like for a substance to have that control over my mood, sleep cycle, personality, and life. But I love the smell. 🤷‍♀️

@judyhowell7075 You're welcome! I think it can be a very helpful tool, and it sounds you decided to use it in a real time of need! If you're looking for an alternative caffeine source, matcha and regular green tea are wonderful, healthful, and less controversial alternatives. Even if you alternate among these and coffee, that can help break an"addictive" cycle and reduce some of the negative side effects of coffee. Drinking organic coffee and having it "bulletproof" style can help. I also learned through Traditional Chinese Medicine to save caffeine until 11-1PM. Look into chi organ clock if you're interested in learning more. I know having any amount of kiddos really takes a lot out of a Momma! Totally good to use the right tool at the right time, and that's a chapter in your life where I'd say caffeine is a really helpful tool. Personally, coffee is a product that I would also only buy if it were grown and sourced sustainably, through fair trade and with living wages paid to the supply chain. That industry is HUGE and unfortunately extremely exploitative of its workers. Sourcing responsibly means you pay more for the same amount, but you drink a product with a lot less"blood on its hands." Paying more and choosing to support these practices can also help reframe one's coffee routine; one can drink it less frivolous, more intentionally, less guiltily. And it might spur one to drink it less frequently in order to stretch one's dollar 😉

@@ikkou111 when we sleep our body has basically “sleep hormones” those hormones make us not hungry which makes sense cause we have to not eat for at least 8 hours so our body needs to not be hungry so we can sleep, it takes about an hour or 2 for those to go away after waking up. i hate eating breakfast as well

I loved that book and I still have it! It made so much sense to me! Another thing they advocated- don’t mix two proteins (steak and shrimp) or a protein with a grain; have meat and vegetables or grains and vegetables at a meal, but not meat, vegetables, and a grain. This helps digestion. I definitely feel much better when I eat that way. The current wisdom is that fruit on an empty stomach will spike your blood sugar, though. 🤔

It’s not about look. I just went through this. I was doing Keto and fasting, and I stopped for the holiday, and I actually ate carbs and sugar, and man the rest of the day I didn’t feel right. I felt tired and bloated n heavy. I’d rather walk around hungry than eat snacks that make me feel like crap compared to cutting out sugar and carbs.

I read the same book in the late 90’s. I remember it said also to don’t eat fruit with other foods, because it digests at a different rate. That’s why they suggest eating it in the morning by itself. Then as long as you wait a half hour before you begin eating other foods, it has a chance to digest and exit the stomach before adding other slower digestible foods.

So am I :) I did this on my own without this knowledge. I just learned that eating fruit in the morning is just better overall. Better digestion, more energy. You get your sweet craving out of the way for the day. At least for me, I will not crave sweets if I’ve had my fruit for breakfast. I follow that with a hearty meal, salads with hearty proteins, egg dishes. I’m exploring savory oatmeal now and making my dinners lighter. It’s put me in the kitchen longer, keeping me productive busy and healthier. :)

My grandad followed this book for a very very long time during my childhood. I honestly think due to his following of it was the reason for him developing Alzheimer’s. He passed over 25 years ago now but this book and his adamant stance to follow it every day still makes me defy what it preaches.

I love this book! I feel horrible when I don't eat fruit in the morning. I incorporated this in the mid 90s when I started getting very sick and there were no answers and healed myself. I'm eating fruit in the morning, more and more these days, and once again noticing how well I feel just doing that one thing.

I used to live near Harvey and Marilyn in Venice in the 70's. They had an organic store on the boardwalk and Paloma Avenue. I bought food from them. They were wonderful.

I read the book, too. You also couldn't eat fruit with anything else because it wouldn't digest properly. Also starchy food could not be eaten with meat. If you are meat, you could only eat non-starchy vegetables. It was based upon the premise that the meat and starch needed different enzymes to digest and those enzymes competed with each other allowing the food to basically rot in your digestive system

I just finished a 21 day fast of nothing but fruit all day everyday from morning to night every single day. And as I’m still figuring out my diet and what I like and dislike and trying to incorporate a more healthier lifestyle .. it came across my mind to take in fruit just not when it’s convenient but everyday and my vegetables which is something I truly don’t always like. And seeing this short honestly helped me come up with a great way to tackle good health and honestly to have that self control over myself to not over indulge too. Even though clearly a lot of childish people decided to click on this video and make jokes and could’ve just easily clicked off if they don’t care I truly appreciate this and will look into that book. I found that book in a storage bin as a kid and read it. Ended up only having fruit in the morning from like age 12-31. I did feel good, it’s not necessarily optimal, but the body gets so used to it so quickly and deviating does make you feel shitty. Again, that doesn’t necessarily mean starting your day with anything other than fruit is bad.

I agree... I have black coffee with MCT oil or butter stirred in , & then , water all day until I eat a huge steak for a early dinner. Best I've ever felt , looked , weighed , performed... I've tried many diets , including Fit for life , & for me , coffee til dinner is best.

@@chrislincoln7455100%. I’d add nice spring water with the coffee. Just coffee can be heavy on the kidneys. Also too much coffee acts as an oxygen inhibitor if you will. Up to a certain amount a day is a healthy stimulant for the nervous system. Anything more than that is not ideal. But like the OP said a person can adjust to anything if you make it. Some people drink 10 or more Coca colas a day. I’m 25 and I couldn’t imagine drinking more than 2 cokes in a week. I don’t consume anything unnecessarily. What you said though about when you do eat, it’s steak etc and no processed bullshit is correct. Eating like that is optimal for most people and their genetics coupled with their blood types to thrive. Just a guy though with an opinion 😅

I did Fit for Life way back in the 80s (I believe), and several times since. Now I’m strictly carnivore (and 23-1 intermittent faster). On another note, Jesse, your book Living with a Seal (I’ve bought several copies, including audiobook, is one of my all time favorites!!! EVERONE needs to read/listen to this book!!❤❤❤

licensed medical professional... all dieticians and diabetes educators will tell you to avoid fruit. there are many different types of sugar. glucose, sucrose, etc, etc. and the body processes them differently. the point of this 'diet' this guy is presenting is fundamentally about living in a caloric deficit similar to something like like intermittent fasting. its good to make your body use the fat it has stored up as energy for when you do miss a meal. its good to do this often.

Good point...but true professional dietitians like my younger brother will tell you fruits and vege is the way to optimal health and I belive likewise as a health professional myself and previously a personal trainer......and this is very true not just for people with specific situations that prevents them from consuming certain sugars but rather the general consumption of fruits and vege can reverse soo many health issues and not just for those in caloric deficit or for intermittent fasting.....Even the study of A&P 1 and 2 premed, tells us alot about our human body mechanism and processes that take place... The bible commanded Adam and Eve to consume fruits and vege as meat and this is bcos our creator knows that's the way to longevity.

I’m a big believer of doing whatever works best for yourself, so I’m glad this guy found it. Me personally? I just do intermittent fasting and take an intuitive approach to eating. Everyone’s different and I think that’s a beautiful thing
