I have a 77 RD standard - burst. I bought it for 50 bucks no case in 1980. They said they couldn't give it away and to make an offer. I bought it for the "Fender" longer scale length thin body. Such a weird guitar at the time and still today - but I love it.

It's amazing that they can't just sell the standard line as it is. And then have a modern or creative line up. Seriously... It's not like anything has changed at all. All they do is just rehash the old and call it new or special edition. I love Gibson and fenders but they don't do anything to challenge the old. Ibanez and Yamaha have been doing really well lately and they are being rewarded for it.

@MintStiles

@@fuzzboi2712 that's fine if people want a classic line, which has always been available. But times are different. Non-traditional big boys are catching up. While you do see lots of fenders still (not as much as before), Gibsons are getting much less and visible in newer media. It's just the same old same old.

They're the Harley Davidson of the guitar world. When Harley try to make something that wasn't designed in the 1960s all the fans burst a collective aneurysm, and when Gibson try to sell something that isn't from 1959 the same happens...
@MintStiles
@MintStiles 2 года назад
@@ryos.5974 I agree. They even kept all the sun bursts. Like how many sun burst guitars do I need? Why is it that they don't build metallic finished guitars. I am saying they need to get some new stuff in. Not just with the studios and the ridiculous robot stuff. The last good improvement was the chambering/modern weight relief and the PLEK. For example, new designs that use simple but different electronics to get the modern players excited. Not that I think it's a good sound, the modern guys seem to really like the scooped chimney octave kind of droning sounds.
@Napalm6b

I don't see why they don't experiment with putting active parametric eq into the guitar. Being able to sculpt the midrange tones, and use a pick-up blending knob would blow a lot of player's minds.

I got into RD’s because of Ghost with the original Nameless Ghouls (Opus Eponymous-Meliora). IMO the original ghouls had an strange mysterious yet elegant way of composing and playing. Also worth-mentioning how Infestissumam and Meliora were fantastically recorded, mixed and mastered, every instrument sounds amazing with lots of dynamics. Greetings from México 🇲🇽🎸

I am actually really curious about trying one of these. I like the unusual shape. Also, I recall that some of the past members of Ghost used RDs (a black and a white one), which was one of the first times I saw a band use this guitar. The ebony finish would be my first choice, but the natural would be my other pick.
@Stratplayer05

They still do (sort of). Nowadays Hagstrom makes the Fantomen, which is basically the same shape as an RD and is an actual signature model, so they play those instead. That shape is still an inseparable part of their whole schtick.

Id love to check out one of those Artist LP's. Combining Moog and Les Paul sounds like a match made in heaven. From what Ive read, even back in the 80's and arguably the heyday of synthesizers, people weren't interested in new tecnology on their Gibsons. Amazing how wome things never change. Oh well. Id still love to have one. Oh, while we're at it. Can somoene explain this obsession with being the first to post? Would've been cool if the could've come up with it's own headstock variation. Looks like it would be a good base for a baritone. And all that real estate looks like it should have either a trapeze or some sort of tremolo system with a separate bridge. Maybe the person who installed the tuners had the screws in their mouth. I like the tones and a chunky neck doesn't bother me . I'm not much of an explorer fan. I like the RD since the tail isn't as big but would still prefer that relief in that area.

I have a 2017 Epi Lee Malia RD Artisan and I absolutely love that thing. Indonesian crafted, Gibson Custom Shop pickups stock, lacquered finish, and just such a unique guitar overall. Plays extremely well too, no qc issues at all. I lucked out back in 2020 and got one of the last new old stock models on the market for msrp. They've trippled in price since then. Lucked out again a few months later( EDIT - it is the same exact case Austin has in the video so definitely from this run )and found a TKL Gibson hardshell case that I'm assuming was from this run that matched the 24¾ scale length since the first RDs had the 25½ scale length; got it for only $100 on Reverb! Overall it's my favorite guitar I've ever owned and pretty rare.

If Gibson or Epiphone started producing more guitars like this, then younger artists would be more attracted to their guitars and the brand would lose it's "boomer" reputation that people have been talking about lately especially. Just spotted one of the Lee Malia's on Reverb for over $1000 but it looks amazing with those pickups and the gold fittings, inlays and binding. But then I am a "boomer" so I would love those classy looks... however, take that style and chuck some interesting paint jobs at it like Fender and Yamaha are doing, and make sure there are cheap enough Epiphone versions available for the same price as a standard Revstar or Player and I can imagine the cool young crowd giving them more than just a second look.

Stage manager came out and saw them still there and lost his shit. I had met him earlier and he was friends with my boss so he asked me to drive them back to their dressing room. Oli was going through his woman problems at that time (as was I) and that ended up being a very memorable weekend.

@@martin-1965 yea man it's a bummer that they don't really make much unique stuff anymore, and the bits they do are usually $5k+ Custom Shops that sell out the second they go on sale. My Lee Malia is such a special guitar to me, I love the RD shape in general but adding the Artisan inlays and such just puts it over the top. And yes the pickups are great! Like I said in my oc, the bridge is a fully designed and built Custom Shop pickup, it's called the 84T-LM. The neck pup is a P94 P90 but was also Custom voiced for Lee. Mines finish is less of a walnut like advertised and more so a translucent wine or dark cherry, not too sure why but I honestly prefer it. And yes they sell between $1,000-$1,600 on Reverb. The ones on the lower end usually have neck repairs etc. I only paid $680 and got it new 😁 one of the last ones that were still for sale in 2020. Overall tho for a number of reasons it's my favorite guitar I've ever owned and I've owned tons. It plays amazing, the Indonesian quality control is on par with Mexico at minimum, and everyone always asks me about it when they see it! It's a head turner for sure. They definitely should do more guitars like this I agree 100%

@@presmasterflash7555 that sounds awesome man haha Lee is a cool dude forsure. He also has a lot more talent than what he's unfortunately being made to write for BMTH currently. Their first album has so many great riffs and solos. Sucks that he's been reduced down to just open chugging but BMTH still does put out some good music every now in then. One things forsure tho he reallllly knows how to design a signature guitar haha. He's pretty passionate for tone too. @@_dmfd You got an absolute bargain there :) and the crazy thing about Gibson is they are really only known outside of the guitar world for one, maybe two, main guitar styles - LP and SG - plus the classic hollow body 335s etc. I'd never heard of this guitar until this Trogly review, but I know all the Fender models, and 100s more. People have been saying Gibson doesn't really care. I mean, the Gene Simmons bass is appallingly finished and - even worse - boring from Trog's last video and Gene is in his 70s - not exactly down with the kids. The guitar you have got is cool but only from Epiphone not Gibson and no longer made of course. I'm sure Gibson will carry on as they are doing and it would take Slash to leave them and go to PRS for them to panic lol, but they are definitely more for collectors like Trogly than players. Oh and you're totally right about Indonesia - making great guitars and even the Chinese models are getting so much better lately.

Oddly enough, this has been my primary guitar since 2011. It provides more of a lightweight Les Paul feel given the lovely 50's neck (I really do think the body is probably chambered though) and it has very little in common with the 70's RD's, short of the basic shape. This is also not a dupe of the 2007 GOTW Silverburst RD Reissue. Close, but the Silverburst one doesn't have nearly as obvious a wood grain and is quite noticeably a few pounds heavier. The finish here is rather soft and it dents easily. The Burstbucker Pro buckers are fantastic. I dig it. It "thwacks" really well and the shape feels more situated than a Firebird.

The neck never felt quite right and the tone controls were so complex, you could get so many variations, that I had to give up on any kind of switching between one definite sound and another. It was hit or miss. This one had a 9v battery, and that had a tendency to conk out too soon for my taste. There's something to be said for keeping it simple. This thing drove me nuts. I traded it eventually for a slightly used black SG jr-- a reissue, if I recall correctly, going from one extreme to another.

The one thing I would love to see Gibson reissue but yet all we get is more slash or Adam Jones Les Pauls

I really like the RD's, and it just looks fantastic in black! I'd love to own that!

at the opening you talking about les paul artist,i think that guitar guy from a band journey got a les paul looks like that, extra switch around that area, i thought that just a modified les paul, so maybe thats factory stock, or not, i just saw the wrong thing.

Underrated shape, but I think offset guitars look better with a headstock which is also offset. I think RD would look better with either Explorer's or Firebird's headstock.

When is a guitar not a reissue but instead a tribute, while not really a Tribute, but more like a Standard (Perloid), but crossed with a Studio (no binding). Has to be from the Gibson Paradox Series.

Gibson should bring these back without all the electronic Moog BS. Plus at a 24.75” scale - I’d buy one asap. I love the look of them.

I had an original 77 RD standard, it was just ok. Kinda heavy and sorta awkward. Tar back pickups, not very lively sounding at all. I don’t miss it. Maybe different pups would’ve woke it up?

Anyone else finding it comforting / "Oddly Satisfying" to watch him oil the fret board? Seriously Trog, make a slow motion video of slowly oiling a fret board... Slap "ASMR" on the video and get easy clicks...

Definitely one of the cooler Gibson shapes! If they made it part of their standard line-up, I would probably get one for shit and giggles

No the Hagstrom is shaped like the RD Martin Persner (Omega) designed the Fantomen and actually it is different from the RD I have both and a 1978 RD Artist just a little info

They have a version of this for the band Ghost. They've used this for a little while now, but I assumed it custom for them. Because they've used other companies but with that same shape. Hmm. I learn something new everyday, yet I'm STILL going to die an idiot.
@UncommonEphemera
@UncommonEphemera 2 года назад
Ghost stopped using the RDs in approximately 2016 when both live guitarists started using a guitar by Hagstrom called the Fantomen which has a similar shape. On the latest tour the lead guitarist is using two Strats loaded with Seymour Duncan Hot Rails and the new Floyd Rose retrofit trems that replace a six-screw Strat bridge.
