So it finally came! Good. ABUS is almost always the same - first standard and rest spools with all-standard key pins. I have much more problems with all-standard pins as with ABUS security pins since they give so much feedback. Non spring-loaded abus locks are a bit harder and I'm not a good picker by any means. The US version looks like "love padlock" here in Germany (not sure about keyway but rest is the same).

Thanks again for the locks! It was very nice to include these. I've never seem an Abus with all standard pins. What model(s)?
@wysmolek
@wysmolek 7 лет назад
For instance 54/40 is all standard. I have one with a crazy bidding high-low-high-low and managed only to pick it few times. With abus (pin-tumbler) is always all-standard key pins and first standard and rest spool driver pins. I believe all dimples are spooled. Disks are beyond my undestanding but they seem secure.

Cool bypass with the deep hook. I never would have thought of that.

By the way, I am really enjoying this point system you've come up with!

Thanks... I didn't like the subjective ranking from my last series, so I've been thinking about doing something like this for a while.

Please consider adding an 'LPLScore' to the end of each lock review video.

I picked one this morning finally after a couple weeks of frustration. it had really tough bitting. Fun fact you can put an american bypass wafer on one.

Nice job... keep pushing yourself!

way awesome!!! yeah, i knew it wouldn't score much more, but the new one you were sent (the HX series it looks like, as per the code below the keyway), is the one i have, and has only an advantage of the better keyway. also, i was studying mine to see if it could be bypassed, thanks for showing that it can!
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
Thanks, and good luck with your own bypass. IIRC, Sparrows has a bypass tool for locks like this. I had one a while ago, but broke it. :-( Also, I believe that HX stamp denotes the date of production, but I'm not positive.

Series is coming along nicely. Great job picking as usual brother and thanks for sharing!

Nice work. So much variation in these in terms of pins and keyways. Almost each time I have bought one I got something a little different. :)

Thanks... and variety is the spice of life.

Nice pick as always Sir. You know, the first Abus I got my hands on had an antibypass wafer. As my collection grew I didn't even think to try those as well. Guess I have a project now. Don't I feel silly. Thanks!

Thanks. I didn't know that Abus included bypass wafers... never seen one myself.

Just picked one up during my lunch, and from the quick look I had, it didn't have a wafer. Hope I can find wafers somewhere in EU. :/

I just bought one 72/40 today ! I will give it a try tonight but to me it looks like a interesting lock to pratice spools !

These are definitely nice practice locks. Good luck with it.

Very interesting to see the difference in manufacturing between different regions for the same exact model. I'm surprised that it was bypassable, since germans are usually very 'precise' in production and don't leave room to such errors in general.. :)
@lockpickinglawyer

Agreed. I enjoy finding difference like this as well.

Just picked up an Abus LOTO lockpad. It's gat an extremely paracentric keyway.

I have a few of the WW style keyway 72/40's They are the most restrictive keyways I've ever seen from Abus. No way you could use a 25 thousandths to pick it. most 72/40 I have (over a dozen) have serrated key pins. all but two or three of them have the single piece core without the adaptor as well. I guess we get different stuff in Canada. If you're interested you can search my channel for Abus WW and see me pick one open. I know you've done the 72/40 to death on this 40mm series, but if you want one let me know.
@lockpickinglawyer

I'm not familiar with that keyway -- I'll take a look soon. Thanks.

the ones I got from work that have the 'ABUS' keyway have codes starting with HH. I could not really see the keyway in your WW video - any chance you could send me a pic?

For sure. I'll dig one out (just packed them away the other day).

I have 2 of these locks, they look like the German one (key-way). One is marked UJ at the bottom and is by-passable as this one. The other is marked XG and is key retaining, so the mechanism works completely different. The inside part (the one that connects to the cylinder plug) is not spring loaded but is a half-moon shape, instead of the quarter shape. so the mechanism cant be turned without turning the plug and therefor makes it non by-passable and key retaining. I bought both on the same shelf in a local hardware store, no difference in packaging, no way to tell.

Nice ongoing detailed series on these "anodizers". Sad to see Master Lock scoring lowest, but not at all surprising. What a tremendous opportunity ML has at present time when they could truly "Make Master Lock Great Again". I don't know, though. Was ML really *ever* great?
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
Thanks...and Master lock wasn't the lowest ranked. THe Squire SAL40 and the other Abus 72/40 ranked lower!

Oh! Thanks for the info. I don't know how on Earth I forgot about that Squire.

I don't get why so many of those padlocks are by-passable, I mean a company may make this mistake one time, but then learn from it.
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
It's a good question... wish I knew.
@Potti314
@Potti314 7 лет назад
Again bypassable! But at least the keyway is better. I was really afraid you would break your nice pick ;-)
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
The bypass is always a disappointment, but it is particularly so on an Abus, because we expect a bit more from the company.
@tedpark6814
@tedpark6814 7 лет назад
It looks like they have a hole at the end drilled where you could insert a pin to prevent the bypass attack too.
@spooxe

Good work. Thats interesting, did you know what series (there are ZC, YD, YC and so on) are not able to bypass? I know from WJ with a bypassing security . Greetings

Very nice picking. Was the orange one as easy? Looks to have better bitting.
@wysmolek
@wysmolek 7 лет назад
Orange one was not 100% original. 1 pin is serrated making it (at least for me) a bit more challenging especially if you tension too hard.
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
Let me guess... pin 1? I knew that one was funky, but I was tool lazy to open it up. I needed to shoot several videos before getting back on the road, so I was in a hurry.
@wysmolek
@wysmolek 7 лет назад
Yup, the first one was with extra love. If all were serrated it would make this lock much better.
@lmars5933
@lmars5933 7 лет назад
vary surprising it was BYPASSABLE nicely done sir.would it be rakeabl? ?
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
I doubt I can be raked.... between the spools and the tight keyway, it seems very unlikely to me.
@HingerlAlois

I‘m wondering which versions of the 72/40 can be bypassed and which not? Spooxe the German shop for Sparrows tools mentions that the bypass driver doesn’t work for the 72/40 WJ series.
