338 bullet testing in ballistic gel 

These were shot from an 18" specialty pistol chambered in 338/375 Ruger. It's ballistically identical to the 340 Weatherby, 330 Dakota, and 33 Nosler when fired from the same length barrels. The shorter barrel on my specialty pistol will duplicate the performance of a 24-26" 338 Win Mag, but do it with an 18" barrel.

@@boondooglebullettesting1432 A winchester model 70 with 26" barrel, with 225gr ttsx and imr 4831 are coking along at 2880fps. @2420 fps your impact velocities that is what a model 70 does at roughly 300 yards. My question is, how is your specialty pistol supposedly duplicating performance at a 460fps deficit?

@@pipefitter82 Remember that the velocity listed in the description is the IMPACT velocity, not the muzzle velocity. The bullet impacted the gel at 215 yards, giving the approximate velocity I listed. The rest of your numbers are pretty accurate. A full power load with the 225 TTSX in my 338/37 Ruger specialty pistol gives me 2870 fps from the 18” barrel. The load fired in this test was not a full power load though. The load fired here was a reduced load so I could simulate an impact at 3-400 yards. It’s easier to adjust the muzzle velocity to match the desired impact velocity than hit the gel blocks with random loads when I may only have 3-5 bullet samples available to test.

I haven’t tested the 200gr SST, but I have tried the SST in other calibers. They’re a pretty soft bullet, so they’d expand pretty fast at 3100 fps. I used the 200gr Ballistic tip for a few years in a 338/06 with good results on game. The 200 BT is constructed a little different that the SST though, so it’s not really a fair comparison.

The 250gr SBII impact was roughly 2450fps. The 270gr SBII impacted at roughly 2245.
