The underrated, unappreciated 338 Federal in Savage 110 Long Range Hunter With 26 inch barrel and adjustable muzzle brake. Shoots a 200 grain bullet as fast as a 308 Winchester shoots a 165 grain bullet but out of the same 308 case necked up to .338 cal!

Great video and beautiful setup! I almost got a 338 Federal in 2020.. I narrowed it down to the Savage Hog Hunter.. almost put one on layaway! Then I came across the advertisement for the BRUSH BUSTING 358 WINCHESTER!!! Apparently.. Ruger made a special run of 400 Ruger American Predators chambered in the 358 Winchester.. which were sold at Grice Gun Shop here in Pennsylvania. For the price of $399.00.. I had to have one 😊 They're both similar and like you've stated.. not at all hard on the shoulder! I've shot mine with and without a muzzle break. I'd compare it to the 30-06 Springfield without the break.. and the 7mm-08 with the break! Finally harvested a buck with it this past season. It literally knocked him off his feet! He still jumped up and mad dashed about 100 yards! Falling a few times and pouring blood along the way! It was a heart and lung shot! Just clipped the heart! Deer are tuff critters.. especially bucks that are hot on the trail of a doe in heat! This particular buck was nose to the ground following a mother doe with its two yearlings! Anyways.. thanks for sharing this brother 😊

I Have 5 rifles that drove me nuts with shooting groups like you showed. Then I bought a one picatinny rail mount then I bought from Ebay heavy scope rings with 3 screws each side. The Winchester Mod 70 338-win mag went from 6-inch groups & 100 yards to 1/4-inch groups @ 100 yards. Then the 4 other left rifles got the same change in scope mounting using the same rings and same picatinny rail with all 4 rifles going from lousy shooter to near 1 shot holes to 1/2-inch groups & 100 yards. I am now 63 years old so when I was in my late teens I hung around a Gunshop that made some really exceptional rifles so I heard for a long time many times rifles that shoot madly can be traced back to 1 peace scope mounts that shift on recoil of the rifle so this is why I was at the end of wits and dished out big buck to solve the lousy accuracy I bought the 1 peace picatinny rail mount and extreme heavy scope rings. I am a professional hunting guide since 1976 working the Pacific NW to Alaska and from a child to adult I've been a Roosevelt Elk hunter so some advice to you don't be shooting at Elk with that rifle over 200 yards or long shots you better be a good tracker because these Elk are tough. You would be best to use the 338 cal 160 grain Barns bullets for game than any kind of lead core bullets .

Love my Savage model 11 LRH in 338 Federal, very accurate with 185gr Barnes TTSX with X-Terminator and midway over run 185gr bullets with Varget. Have some 5 shot groups in the .2-.3” (.272,.285”) at 100 yards. It’s an awesome cartridge.

im 64 years old i started reloading when i was about 20 years old and in the last 44 years i have found out that very few factory loads work well in any guns i have owned and i have owned dozens of rifles pistols and shot guns as well as black powder guns and loaded black powder shells mainly 12 ga but i have loaded 32-20 44-40 30-30 and 45-70 and a few modern rounds as a joke ....when you reload you can dial in your ammo for 1 gun and some times you will run into the odd gun that just will not shoot right no matter what you do...and i should tell i just got an old savage 110 in 30-06 that shot a 5/8 inch pair at 90 yards with factory ammo and i have 2 other witness to that fact and can tell you that this is the first time in my life i have seen factory ammo perform that well that ammo is winchester 150 grain copper extreme point....the reason why i did not want to take the third shot is i did not want to spoil that moment of seeing sub moa factory ammo in a 20 year old savage 110.....and the other 2 guys agreed with me if i hadnt went out to look at it i would have been better prepared for the third shot...but why spoil some thing so good thats what i call the perfect pair and thats enough for me i know the rifle can do it so why waste costly ammo...i did some thing similar with a hand made 45 caliber long rifle even the rifleing was hand cut and very shallow but i shot a 3/16 inch pair with that rifle at a 100 yards...that rifle had to be cleaned after every second shot you could barly get a bullet down the bore after the second shot it was one sweet rifle and i only had that one about a year before it got stolen......

The same muzzle energy gains are seen blowing out the shoulder of many bottlenecked cartridges. With the .308 case .338 feels like a good place to stop before you get into light-for-caliber territory. Same thing is true with .223. There's a wildcat called the 6.8 badger which fires a 90gr .277 projectile at the same speed .223 fires a 60gr, same sectional density, only ~4gr more powder in the charge. So a ~15% increase in powder for a 50% increase in energy, at the same SD.

I have been puzzled also why the 338 Fed died and died out for the AR 10. I build AR 10 uppers to sell in WSM cartridges and in 6mm - 284 win and in 6.5 - 284 Norma. It might be in soon in the future I add the 338 Fed and the 358 win to the AR 10 uppers I sell. One gun shop in Anchorage Alaska is buying my AR 10 uppers in 375-300 WSM on a regular basis for new orders. I have told the Gunshop I am about to do an AR 10 upper in 35-300 WSM which they said yes, we want that also. I am waiting for someone to ask for an AR 10 upper in 6.8 Western which someone sooner or later is going to ask for one. The video on RU-vid of a 458 WSM AR 10 has me thinking to add this to my own AR 10 uppers for sale.

Interesting caliber. I like the long slender barrel. Not too much weight and I like cartridges like the .308 and 30-06 necked up to larger calibers. It seems when it is done the round becomes faster and more energetic.

Nice rifle and nice cartridge. I was looking to do 2 AR 10 uppers in 338 Federal and 358 win but I am now looking to re-barrel a Weatherby Mark 5 due to it was defective rifle from Weatherby and Weatherby isn't going to fess up to putting out their guns with defects. So, I am on the repair of this rifle myself. Never buy a Weatherby because the company won't take any responsibility for defects, and this is the 5th Weatherby rifle I've bought that was defective then I got stuck for repairs.

Kind of an untimely fate for .338 Federal. I guess everyone wants long range cartidges these days, but as a Midwestern hunter that would be a baller elk and black bear cartridge. Been trying to get my hands on a Savage Hog Hunter, or a used M77 Ruger, but they have gotten really hard to find.

The hog hunters occasionally pop up on gunbroker as do the M77s. Im thinking about selling my Savage and getting a Ruger M77. The M77s are pricey though.

Velocity is what velocity is what controls a wound channel not the bullet diameter if bullet diameter did a 308 would have the same wound channel as a 300 win magnum

People often run down the .338FD because it’s trajectory is much worse then the 308. Energy is what makes this cartridge special. More energy then a 30-06 at the muzzle. With the Leupold CDS system it’s a no brainer of a cartridge
@MisterBrewer
@MisterBrewer 9 месяцев назад
I really dont think the trajectory is much worse than the 308 unless you are comparing the lightest 308 bullets to the heavier 338 Fed bullets. And it's probably better than the trajectory of the .358 Win, but you never hear anyone complaining about that.

I wanted a 458 socom but you can only get 8 or 9 rounds in a 556 mag n the 338 federal is practically a 458 socom twin that works in a 308 mag n same capacity so it was just what I wanted - same power but more capacity - perfect for taking down 15 or 20 linebackers coming to do you harm - I'm not a hunter but wanted something that will drop a beast ... 4 legs or 2 ... in his tracks
@lurebenson7722

You can buy an AR 10 upper in 338 WSM . The 338 Federal has nothing in common with the 458 Socom not even close. I build to sell AR 10 uppers in the WSM cartridges and other cartridges. If you want an AR in 45 call the AR 10 can be made in the 458 WSM which you can see a video of one on RU-vid. The 458 WSM puts out at the muzzle 5000 Foot pounds of energy.

As an Alaskan brown bear hunting guide since 1989 I hope you never have to defend your life against any adult brown bear with that small 338 Fed deer gun because I am betting on the bear will kill you before you killed the bear. In SE Alaska along the Alsek River me and clients have had brown bears shot full of holes from 338 magnums to 375 magnums and two people shooting with the bear coming to 20 feet of us before the bear was down for good. My years of seeing clients shoot these Hugh and dangerous brown bears has given me great respect just how tough these bears are which has made me a requirement for all clients to bring the minimum of a 338-win mag and ammo loaded with Barns TSX bullets or go hire another guide because getting jumped and mauled or killed by a wounded bear isn't worth any kind of money.

@lurebenson7722 As an avid Alaskan outdoorsman, hunter, pilot since i was born in 1967 thats friends with many master guides and hunting guides, 2 of which I fly, hunt, and fish with regularly, I think I know a thing or two about the 1000's of brown bears ive been around and seen some of which have been 10 feet away. I'm around them alot an i have a cabin on the far side of Lake Iliamna. I own .338-.378 Weatherby and .338 win mag as well as a safe full of other magnums and rifles. 338 federal and 338 win with nosler 210 are 3225 ft lbs and 4057 fr lbs. Drop is 1.5 inch difference at 300 yards w/ same barrel length. I'll take 25 rounds up close with a semi auto 338 fed vs your long bolt gun w/ 3 rounds you might get two shots off with any day! I also have 2, 375 raptors on ar-10 as well. You are an armchair quarterback back at best compared to what I've seen or done but thanks for your uneducated 2 cents!

If i'm gonna hunt bown bear, which i don't hardly do cuz they are a pain in the ass for something i dont eat, i would use one of my magnum long guns!
