I get it, I can’t afford it either, but if you enjoy reloading like I do, it’s cool to see it taken to the nerdy extreme, the extreme that I can’t afford. It’s fun to learn this stuff. If you don’t like it you don’t have to watch it…

I started reloading my own match ammunition with the intent of saving very little to nothing...and here I am looking at the UR shop machines comparing it to my 2x4 bench with Lee Precision, RCBS, Redding and Winchester brass neatly in their places waiting for me to load some cartridges 😆 AWESOME shop, UR. Thank you for showing us your shop and going nerd on the hobby. The only thing I have heard of in this video is "1776", ".338 Lapua" and "Blackhound". Good stuff all around.

Gavin- I have enjoyed .338 LM for years, glad to see you build one! I have shot mostly the 300gr Lapua Scenar out of Lapua and Peterson cases. It likes to be loaded at -0.015 in. from the lands in my experience. As long as this fits in the CIP+ magazine, you are good to go. One of my guns was chambered with a bit less freebore than I like, however it still shoots the 300gr Scenar wonderfully. Enjoy!
@zs503
@zs503 Год назад
I should add that I have found the best ES and SD (8.5) with the 300gr Scenar with 97.5gr of Reloader 33, at -0.015 in. from the lands. Good luck finding any these days unless you already had some. 7977 works well in one of my rifles but burns a bit too fast for longer barrels, starts to get pressure signs too early. US 869 works but is not as consistent, but certainly shows no pressure signs. N570 works, but I have not found a consistent charge in my testing. Excited to see what you come up with!
@zs503
@zs503 Год назад
Actually, I undersold the performance with Reloader 33, just went to the shop and checked the data. Velocity avg = 2935fps at 30 degrees F, out of a 28 inch barrel. ES = 23, SD = 6.9. 97.5gr charge weight, OAL 3.70 in, 300gr Lapua Scenar seated -0.015 in. from lands. Only bad thing is the powder is temperature sensitive.

I'm not sponsored so I did something similar on a budget. I got pre-sale pricing on an American Rifle Company Archimedes long action and a matching Xylo chassis. That limited me to a standard magnum bolt face but with 3.85" CIP magazine well. So I chose 338 RUM (the poor man's 338 Lapua) and had Lothar Walther cut a shouldered pre-fit barrel for me at 30" long, with 3/4-24 muzzle threads (with one of their heaviest tapered profiles) . I added an Area419 Sidewinder brake which is fantastic, great recoil reduction without too much blast directed back to the firing line. The trigger is a Triggertech Diamond. I was able to find magazines that are CIP length for 338 RUM (Accurate Mags maybe?). So I can single load extra long ELR rounds and magazine load lighter bullet "hunting" rounds. I'm not sure that would work with a 338 Edge (a slightly longer 300 RUM based wildcat). 30" makes it big and the gun is heavy but I can loosen the chassis LOP adjuster rods and slide off the butt, then I can fit the whole thing (and my cleaning rod) in my cheap SKB 4909 hard case with my custom cut Kaizen foam interior (Kaizen foam is awesome and not terribly expensive by the way). I just made a padded backpack strap/sling for it using two cheap Midway USA padded slings and some Grovetech hardware. I think it turned out pretty nice and it was cheap. I need to get a better ELR type scope for it. All in all, I could line it up on a bench next to you and not feel outgunned. I don't have the nice Cerakote or laser engraving but it still looks good.

I still have yet to see an application of the 338LM outside of the military. There are much better calibers for LR and ELR. Besides, it'd be pretty miserable to have to fire 300 rounds of LM in 2-3 days of an F-Class match. Now, if there were a 7mm Lapua Magnum, whoa nelly and Katie done barred the door. Beautiful build. Is it more expensive to build a gun then to just go buy one!??
@guyminer3168
@guyminer3168 Год назад
That's a good question. For me it depends on my needs, wants, my wallet and my abilities. 1) I have neither the knowledge nor the tools to build a rifle. 2) I've won matches, done well in others, and have taken every species of big game I wanted, without ever building a rifle... Having one built is indeed expensive if a skilled rifle builder is used. Buying one... There are many great rifles on the market anymore. For example my son's 7mm Rem Mag Bergara, which was about $900, groups at about 1/2" at 100 yards with powerful hunting loads. Honestly, that's better than I've ever asked of a hunting rifle.
