So you 2 rather watch these AC 100'S, rather than the 75's? These weren't even the best muti's in the world. there copies of the big open oceaners at the time. The big technological advance, was the Big Hard wing only. Either way , even if they bring thard wing back, it didn't take them long to realize, that there were moving away from this quickly.

@@jameslittlewood7821 agreed. I guess I was saying sarcastically, that "the big technological advancement" was the wing. Multi was tried in 88, but I don't remember the wing? I'll take a look. I've been bindging The America's Cup seasons for the past few weeks and it's amazing how different these boats are from one another compared to other races. The Alinghi crews have been truly impressive during the other Cups and to see them at such a disadvantage here is a little disheartening.

@team3383 7 лет назад
Ainghi lost it when they 'gave in' and allowed power (other than human power) to be used on these boats. They thought they would gain time in hoisting the main and in fact GAVE the whole thing to Oracle who could then use the wing. Before this Oracle had to use conventional sails. Thats why it went on for so long because Oracle wouldn't leav the bone alone until they got their wing. Alinghi gave in and lost...

Lawyers have always been part of the cup. Y’all remember back in the day when the Aussies (or was it Kiwi’s) came to the cup with a fiberglass 12m? And the wing keel from the Aussies in 1983 was litigated against as well. From a sailing standpoint, this deed of gift cup match was pretty lame. But from a technological standpoint, these boats were cutting edge. This cup lead to the development of the AC foiling cats, which were amazing boats. That said, I did prefer the sailing/racing in the 12m era. The IACC mono hulls were fun to watch as well. Those cup cycles were marketed to sailors, as opposed to the NASCAR/Busch Lite crowd, like the foiling cats were.

+Pedro Slavatori: Teenageers peddling to generate enough power to electric winches and power up computers that set the foils, wing sail and jib to a millimetre and GPS tracking. Is that what you call back on track ??? The current AC foiling craft are an amazing engineering feat and showcase of what is possible with wind power, but in my mind the sould of the AC and match racing was definitely lost by moving to foils and teenagers who don't even have to know anything about sailing and tactics but DO have to obey computer instructions to the second. Next AC should be without the humans who only generate electricity for the winches and computers now. They should each be given identical battery packs and then go off and race with robots. THE RACING WOULD BE MUCH CLOSER AND SPECTACULAR PICTURES FOR THE PRESS. Next time round it will be a virtual competition on computers... Pity for the soul of sailing and losing experienced sailors to easily moulded teenagers who can generate more wattage than older people.

Good points there, it has come a game of tech, rather than sailing but I guess the america's cup has always been like that, there are other races where the boats are the same, I guess those are the ones that are true to the competition of authentic sailing.
@team3383
@team3383 7 лет назад
It is and the current youth see it as this. They are amazed at the foiling AC craft but after many years as a sailing instructor this is the very first time I actually hear the children saying "Wow" but then choose to sail class boats and learn true tactics and skills where the human body and mind is at the centre of things NOT computers. Just like all our road transport is run by computers (And can be shut down in a second by "higher" authorities) our portable phones are now not only taking pictures of us when we don't realise it, but also taking our finger prints !!! All in all (and like George Orwell predicted ist for our own good) it will work until someone like Hitler (to give an example) gets hold of the reigns. THEN WHAT ? This sailing by computers and needing young men to create wattage to re charge batteries that run the said computers and winches is a laugh at sailors. Technically 'at the very top', but lacking all humanity. Only the skippers and a select few actually know what is going on on these craft that are unable to set to sea without their computer programmes. Why oh why involve humans on these craft ? It doesn't make sense. A malintentioned hacker could/should hack into the programmes of these craft and stop them right in their tracks seconds after the first start. THAT WOULD BE FUN TO WATCH :-) All the RIB's with the geeks onboard frantically trying to re-boot their programmes and a bunch of teenegers drifting away with the tide. LOL. I would do it but I lack the know how. I would however back up a hacker completely if one wanted a go at it.
@psneves
@psneves 7 лет назад
Team33 by back on track I meant this time I actually saw some competition I my opinion. but yeah some guys on board never got to see what they were sailing on. one day this play of tech development will get too expensive and like the F1 they will hve to limit new high ultra expensive to develop so as to have conpetition among drivers instead of developers. the cup.The AC HAS to find its balance so as to keep the competition among men. on the other end the AC is a devolopers cup too just like F1 and tha's the trick. maybe coming to a rule where having the best foil can get you to win may take the fun out off the men competition.

No sail changes, chutes to fly, peels, etc. As a result, the whole race seems to now be in the hands of the tactician rather than the entire crew. All they do anymore is grind away, and that's just to "recharge" the mechanisms used for trimming, etc.

@Angelous Bacon Yes. I was exaggerating. Hence the ridiculously high percentage I used. That said, I'll still take the days when there was a foredeck crew that had to wrestle in a 400 lb. jib to the deck after hoisting a chute for a downhill leg, and swing the spinnaker pole over during a jibe, or do an emergency peel when the chute blows out on a windy day.
