I speak with Dr. Myhill on the role gut health plays in chronic fatigue syndrome. Dr. Myhill shares with us her analogy of the 'energy bucket' and also her car analogy, to help us understand all the key elements we need to be considering when seeking improvement in energy levels.
We also touch on the role of mitochondria, the energy factories of the cells, as well as the adrenal and thyroid glands.

Firstly I have a huge respect for Dr Myhill and her books are an invaluable reference.That said I do question her assertion that the paleo-ketogenic diet is the ONLY way based on her further assertion that this is what we are evolved to eat. As she mentions here, homo sapiens evolved in Africa near the equator: The oldest remains so far discovered go back 150,000 years, and importantly these were people who were anatomically identical to modern humans. These people were omnivores and will have eaten anything they could lay their hands on, and since this is equatorial Africa we're talking year round growth of all manner of foods including those fruits, berries, nuts and tubers rich in carbs. For sure, they're not massively over-eating grains and cereals or starchy tubers, because, as hunter gatherers, they're not growing crops. But the 'autumn only' idea can't be quite right? Also there is growing evidence from places like Gobleki Tepi that the 'agricultural revolution' of around 10,000 BC was probably a reintroduction of such skills post ice-age, rather than being the time of their first invention. I suspect that human 'civilisation' goes back a lot further than what we're told by orthodox archaeology which basically starts things off at the end of the last ice age and assumes that people who were anatomically identical to us left Africa and spent 140,000 years twiddling their thumbs, which seems implausible to me. Surely the argument to make is then about drastically reducing our dietary dependence on carbohydrates? Using the paleo-ketogenic diet as a carb and sugar detox to regain ketones as a viable energy source? For some this might be a 'for life' thing, for others something shorter term, maybe only a few months. I just wonder if the whole idea wouldn't be more 'palatable' if it were presented as a six month dietary 'reset' to eliminate the effects of modern excesses? Arguably it's easier to forbid a food group than it is to eat it in sensible proportions, but when history shows us long lived civilisations such as those on the Indian sub-continent and China subsisting largely on rice, wheat, legumes, veggies etc. it would seem that with the junk and rubbish eliminated and detoxed, healthy gut flora re-established etc, it's not actively bad for us, in moderation? I've phrased the above as questions because I'm keen to learn, and might well have missed something obvious :)

Hi Julian. Many thanks for your comment. No I don't think you have missed anything and I tend to agree with your line of thinking - it is rare there is ONE approach that will work for everyone. Ultimately there are numerous causes to CFS and thus treatment needs to be tailored to the needs/preferences of each individual. I do feel a low carb approach is almost always best but having some root veggies/tubers etc in there for some is really helpful and needed.

We have to remember they didn't have pesticides and genetically modified food.well we don't think so they found a steel ship 2500 years old with cast gears in this week so who knows.

The tubers weren’t as starchy and the fruit was small and not nearly as sweet as we have now.

Proper circadian rhythm is foundation of health. Then food.
@ourhealthpath
@ourhealthpath Год назад
Yes I’d agree with circadian rhythm being foundational. Yet it’s also bidirectional - many of the conditions that can be caused by circadian dysfunction are thought to also cause or exacerbate circadian dysfunction.

I love you dr my hill ,oh how I wish I was in England and that you’re taking new patients ,but I’ve suffered my whole life ,my mother too,I’ve heard versions of what you’re saying but never presented the way you are / do.!!I have severe fatigue ,cfs and hypothyroidism autoimmunity,wondering now if the severe symptoms are the result of Candida and when it’s really bad Candida die off.Listening to you makes me think that’s what it is ,one of tje symptoms is not only fatigue but this horrible feeling of being pulled to the ground,don’t know if I can convey what I mean by that ,it’s horrific 😡

My friend cured candida by taking the larger bottle she bought, of capsules called "Candidase" which also well addresses the "die-off" symptoms so one doesn't suffer them at all. Good luck to you.

First time visitor here to listen to you and Dr Myhill, (The video title drew me in, being the parent of someone with CFS). I am currently in the process of adjusting my own food intake after months of feeling 'not right' and was fascinated to hear Dr Myhill talk about fasting. Does one simply stop eating anything , and for how many days? I am not averse to the idea, and am generally in good health.
@ourhealthpath
@ourhealthpath 2 года назад
Hi there! We’d recommend speaking with a nutritional therapist to discuss fasting - there are different ways to fast and things to consider before implementing any extended fast. One of the more popular ways to fast is the 16:8, where you eat with in an eight hour window (say 8am-4pm) and then fast for 16hrs over night. Wishing your child a full recovery.

So to break it down for CFS/ME people like me 1) cut carbs and sugar 2) focus on fats and fiber and protein Keto/Paleo 3) do some fasting. What else did those of you with more energy and attention catch from this vid? thanks

The problem I have with this diet is all the hormones that is injected into the animals ……surely that will impact on our gut microbiome ?

Great point! Yes ideally we would need to be eating antibiotic and hormone free produce but I totally appreciate this is impossible for many due to the crazy costs.
