Bob, I have been working with fiberglass for over 5 decades, I put the cloth as I use it in the resin so it is saturated then lay it where it goes. When you get the doors done you can paint it and make a beautiful street rod out of it. The beauty of glass you can work with it and make it look great. You will do great as you learn.

Watched a guy in the boatyard do just what you said. He would lay those strips out on old cardboard, get one wet, place it, get the air bubbles out and move on to the next one.

Awesome to see Red back and as far as tips on glass it looks like you have the right touch, trimming is a bit easier and less dusty if you trim the edges with a utility knife when it gets to a stiffer rubbery time in the cure, if it starts to tear just wait another 5 or 10 minutes, that's a great looking car Bob and I can't wait to see what you do with it as I'm sure it's bound to be something special
@yolocah

when you do the strips you start with a narrow strip and do another layer slightly wider strip and then another strip wider again. this builds up the strength.
@camcutcnc
@camcutcnc 5 месяцев назад
Hi Bob, the cool temperature helped you out a lot as it slowed the cure of the resin and gave the binders in the cloth more time to relax. The other thing that helped is that you mixed your resin in a smaller cup and then transferred to the roller pan. If you would have left it in the cup it would have kicked sooner ( Important on warmer days !!) Keep up the good work !
@camcutcnc

Hi Bob, I was just thinking about how you might go about making the trunk lid nicer. I would give the outside a sanding and spray Gelcoat on the outside spraying more coats in the low areas. Just a thought.

Done some fiberglass work, but that has been decades ago. Not too sure I could give good advice now. With the angles of the top and bottom being wrong for it, I can't help but think it is for a rumble seat lid instead of trunk lid, as they open opposite of each other.

Your the first person I ever seen doing it the EZY way using a paint roller i been doing that for 30 years the only thing you need to do is use styrene to wipe the fibre glass down it helps activate the glass and tear the fibre glass mat it helps too blend in so you don’t end up with high spots keep it up ilove the show

Years ago I worked in a body shop and we were working on a 61 corvette and the hood was low on the drivers side. The boss cut a piece of rubber and put it under the hood and it fit perfectly. By the time the car was completed he took the rubber out and the hood held the shape. I didn't see that coming but I didn't know beans I was just doing the crap work.

25:30 As the excess fiberglass cures on the overhangs - wait until it is about 75%-80% cure (still a bit pliable) and cut off the excess with scissors (an old pair). That saves a lot of time in cutting/grinding once it cures completely.

Get some quarter inch thick plywood and trace the curve of your trunk opening of the outside edge. Then subtract the thickness of your trunk lid then cut it in a strip the same size as the edge of your trunk that you cut up to get the curve you might have to re cut it but if you use the plywood as your edge and fiberglass it on the inside of your trunk to the edge of it use clamps or rivits or screws whatever you got to make your trunk form to the edge of your plywood it will line up perfectly and give more support along the edge as well

Hey there Bob, for old fibreglass I use West Systems epoxy for the best mechanical adhesive. If you need to modify other parts that require a stronger bond, use 105 resin with either 205 fast hardener or 206 slow hardener. You did a good job on this but mixing partial hard resin with new is not good practice. Always mix enough resin to do the job in one go. I am also looking to purchase a tupperware hotrod body to do up.

Bob, cut your glass in smaller pieces so it will lay flatter easier. Pour the resin in liberally it will be easier to brush or roll around. Not like steel, lots of small pieces just as strong as big one.

Hey Bob if you want to measure the resin to the amount of glass you use. Use a small scale, weigh the glass and measure out the resin ounce to ounce. One ounce of fiberglass gets one ounce of resin. Hope this helps!!

Bob, like everything inlife there are tons of ways to get what you want. You're on the right path. With polyester resin you can recoat after you can't leave a fingernail impression. It's usually 15-20 minutes. For fitting the deck lid , I'd start with putting the rubber in place then fit the deck lid. If you have hinges put them on as well. At that point you will know what adjustments you do or don't have. Metal is easier because you can twist it or perswaid it the way you want. You'll have plenty of suggestions for eveything you do ..... I guess that's just the nature of it all. Annyway you're doing fine. Unfortunately I do hate when you say it's good enough it's just a rat rod ! I have the thought that make it as best as you want or whatever time your wiilling tto put into it. Most everything you give up on probably could be better it's just figuring out how and how long it takes. By figuring it out the you can figure out how to do it faster. Itdoesn't matter to anyone but yourself though ! Enjoy what you do and do it for you ! Learning to do it better is for your satisfaction. When you're doing for the public is when it does make a difference tough. Kee on what youre doing !
