I’ve watched this a bunch of times, but this is the first time I realized you’re driving through Wilsonville. I used to live there, then Canby, before moving to Idaho. Even bought my 2018 4Runner new at Wilsonville Toyota in 2017. Miss that area so much. ❤
AWESOME! Yup, mine came from Wilsonville Toyota, and I still live in that area. Two of my kids live in the Boise area, so it’s a favorite destination too. Happy trails 🙌
Thanks for a great vid. I’m going the same route in 2022. Thanks for showing how yours went. I really appreciate the channels you and your brother are doing, so helpful for novices like me. And it helps we share the same backyard (I live four minutes from the tire shop). What I mean by that is the terrain, trails, etc. are very relevant to me. Many thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experiences.
Looks awesome! Great job! I agree with the author, the wider the width, the worse the stability and controllability. The greater the weight and, accordingly, the load on the bearings increases, the fuel consumption increases and the acceleration dynamics decreases. Personally, I prefer to increase the profile of the tire, for example setting 255/80/17.
Love the ko2s. I have 60K on my ko2s 18’ 4runner. Stock size. They still have plenty of tread left. Thank you for the video as I will be looking at either 295/70 but I really like the taller 285/75.
I've been running 285/75r17 KO2s on my stock-suspension JKU for 4 years and 45,000 miles, and they still have plenty of tread left! I am blown away by these tires and they have taken me from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, and from the heat of Death Valley to the blizzards of Montana. I begin to think about changing them, then they just prove their value season after season. Great tires!
285/75 r17 nice especially without having to change the front bumper. We recently went with a Hefty Fabworks front bumper and we fit 35x12.5r17. I know lots of people said that 34's and 35's you have to regear but with the right tire weight it's not to bad on power. We went with the Mickey Thompson MTZ P3's and they weight is not bad on them at all. Keep up the detailed work and videos.
I'm fairly new to learning how all of this works and I'm always looking for more input, but would not regearing and running 35s put extra stress on the transmission, especially on long drives? And is it that big of an issue even if it did? Thanks
@@mastrtonberry2 it's been done for years and it actually helps reduce the stress on everything due to the rotational torque it takes to turn the larger more aggressive tires. It does cause the motor and transmission to turn a little faster to create 1 revolution with the tire but that's how it helps build up the extra power to rotate them. Check out driving line on youtube he has a good video explaining regearing.
I went through 2 great sets of KO2's on my old FJ. They did great in everything except mud. Every tire has a weakness and mud is this one's. Easy to get 50k or more out of them if you rotate religiously. Lol. Agreed on Pink Floyd!!!
Really good information and presentation! Enjoyed your video. You’ve gained some new friends who are excited to follow you along and see more content! -Tawnie & Wayne
Thx amigo, she’s coming together nicely. Trying to find the time to install the Southern Style Offroad hybrid bumper, 30” light bar, winch, and high clearance fender mod. Works, always in the way 😉😄. Looking forward to checking out your latest vid.
So true. Fortunately I have a two pet lift, so I’m able to easily and quickly rotate them myself. I’m going to take them in for ax rebalance though. 80k from a Tundra is amazing!
@@aired-downoverland9239 lol I bought them for that reason though so I can’t complain. They fit nicer in my 3rd gen. My brother in law has a leveling kit in his 5th gen trd pro and fits true 34” toyo mt without a BMC and stock UCA. I was surprised it fit.
You guys rock. So i think you can fit 35's. Go for it. Also, where is your brother at? He makes you laugh from time to time. I wish I had a bro like that, handy and useful when needed. Great content...please keep it up.
When I bought new 4runner trd off road with big tires. I have an issue when I drive on the highway. I hear a little noice. It's normal. 4Runner good for off roading not on regular road.
Thank you R M, like all rigs, she’s a work in progress. A couple big ticket items going on soon will really add a lot; SSO hybrid bumper with lightbar and winch, SSO high clearance front fender mod, and Method 703’s (likely in matte black).
@@Pb_Slinger Though it could vary based on where you live and the shop doing the work, my Nitro 4.88’s, ARB locker, plus all labor, is going to run around $4k…AND, it could be 3-6 months before I have all the parts. So frustrating…
Thank you. I had some computer problems that got me frustrated. I have footage for the hybrid front bumper install and high fender clearance chop, I just need to edit it. I may do that here soon.
@@aired-downoverland9239 I know it can be overwhelming and frustrating with editing, comments , subscribers and other issues that come along to the daily workloads. I ordered the stage 3 foam cell but will only be adding 33 in tires since I do a lot of towing also. Wish you the best !
Thx. The only thing I don’t like about the stock wheels is they’re only 7.5 inch wide, so the tire sits about an inch inside the fender. Just an esthetic thing.
@@aired-downoverland9239 Ya i'm gonna tell myself it helps keep the beads on and rocks off the paint !!!!! i'm going 287 70 17 stock rims 3 in probably the ome bp51 kit
Thx Fredadd. No, not a fan of spacers. I think they’re likely ok if you don’t plan to Offroad hard. Glad you’re finding some inspiration here. I also find a lot of great ideas and inspiration on RU-vid. Welcome to the channel!
Hey man, love the work you’re doing. Your rig is looking awesome. Was there a reason you went with a 285/75 over a 305/70? My wife’s 4Runner. Toyo 305/70r17s are sitting in the shop already mounted on method 701s, SPC UCAs, super tight cab mount chop and pinch weld are done, and did the high clearance cut. We’re ready to go but King gave me a 36 week ETA on our shocks though. Being patient is tough when you know the finished product will be so awesome.
I really appreciate the comment and compliment; our rigs are labors of love, right? The only difference between my 285 and your 305 is the width, yours being a full 12” and mine being 11.2”. I was concerned with how tight it would be next to my UCA’s (Ironman), but I don’t think you’ll have that with SPC’s tubular design. I’ll have to figure it out one way or another, she’ll be on true 35’s after re-gearing to 4.88’s next year. 👍🏻
Great comment OT, and an accurate observation. I actually filmed that but had a memory card go corrupt (lost ALL my dual battery install footage). I plan to shoot those angles again when I have the 8.5 x 17 wheels installed, since the offset is slightly different. Keep your fingers crossed for no rubs 🤞
I’m running 285 70 17 mud terrain tires, with 3” lift, viper cut, and my tires still rub when I turn sharp enough. I did cut some plastic out but still rubs!
@@aired-downoverland9239 my wheels do push them out a little, when I checked I only saw rubbing on a small section of plastic on backside of wheel well. I cut away the plastic which fixed it, now only when I turn sharp I notice rubbing. Assumed it was just the aggressive tires? Will have to look closer
Will do. Once I do the Southern Style Offroad bumper and high clearance fender chop (next weekend) I’m confident it won’t even come close to rubbing…but I’ll for sure video it.
Hey man.. saw your latest video, I hope you fully recover soon. Take care of your self. I had few questions regarding this particular video. - did you have any rubbing on the front fenders? I notice you did not have the high clearance cut on this video - on your newer video any reason why you changed out the stock trail rims to aftermarket? - when you installed winch bumper and winch did it cause a rake and did it cause more rubbing on your 34”? - Currently , do you still have 34” on the runner? If so any prolonged issues having the 34” - any updated or further modifications made to accommodate the 34”? Still just the BMC, high clearance and suspension?
No rubbing early or later; still running the same tires since I only have 29k miles on my 2021. I only drive it for fun. No rake as the hybrid bumpers are light, even with the winch, plus most aftermarket coilovers have pre-load adjustment. As for the recovery, it’s going really well, and I’m just grateful to be alive. 👍🏻👍🏻
Truck looks really good! Are those UCA’s adjustable? Oh and there are blackout kits available for those two chrome strips Toyota added as of 2020 or 21 up front on the grill either side of the sombrero!
@@aired-downoverland9239 www.ebay.com/itm/For-Toyota-4Runner-2020-ABS-Matt-Black-Front-Center-Grilles-Grille-Molding-Trims/274442692750?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&campid=5335841727&toolid=10001&customid=4ro1371059 Or just remove them, screwed in from behind I believe and plastidip or paint em. I plastidipped my front and rear lower valences and added a few coats of plastidip glossifier and it’s held up great s far!
Luis, It handles just fine, no issues there. The only time the transmission felt forced was on hills, on or off-road. That said, I put a lot of miles on it, both on and off-road, without issue.
Im wanting to go with 34s i just cant make up my mind on 305/70/r17 or 285/75/r17 Will both of these work? I am running the icon stage 5 lift doing a bmc as well
The only difference is the width, the 305 is a full 12” wide, while the 285 is 11.2” wide. Based on expertise with my 5th gen, which has a BMC, inner fender liner trim, and front bumper high clearance trim, the 305 will likely have you chasing rubbing issues. Can you solve them? Probably, but it’s a question of whether or not you want to pound and seam pinch welds, trim or remove the lower fender trim piece. In the end, chose what you like. 👍🏻🙌
Thank you Mark. This sounds like a “subscriber” pitch, but it’s not. Check out my Instagram (same name) and you’ll see the suspension in action. All the best on your project.
how tall does this make the 4runner overall? I don't want to hit the top of some parking garages here in Houston. Debating on 285/70 or 285/75 or 295/70 if possible
Andrew, my rig has a 3” lift and 285/75R17 tires. With just that, I could fit into any garage. My rooftop basket, however, makes it so I cannot fit into parking garage. The 295/70 is slightly shorter and slightly wider than the 285/75 (33.8 vs 33.3 and 11.2 vs 11.6). With just a body mount chop and no mud flaps, I have zero rubbing. Hope that info helps
I made a custom bracket that mounted them to my highlift jack. I’ve since changed the location to my roof by replacing the stock crossbars with two made by Victory 4x4; Maxtrax mounts bolt directly to them.
Thank you for the great video! I plan on going with 34” for my ORP . I have question regarding the alignment. Did you adjust the caste? If so to what ? I have the same iron man kit .
Have you tested to see if you rub in the front when you turn in to a driveway at about 3/4 turn at 2-3 mph? I'm guessing that unless you are barely moving you will rub against the plastic where the mud flap used to be. At full turn you won't since you have the BMC. Curious.
Not that I’ve noticed, but I plan to do some full articulation and turning tests right before and after I change to a 8.5” wheel; I’ll be videoing and posting the before and after.
@@mikelamp8118 Funny thing, I am too. I suspect the new wheels will cause some rubbing up front, but we’ll see. I have three weeks wait for the wheels 🙄
I haven’t yet, but desperately need to as my camera is currently useless. I haven’t decided if I’ll tackle that one myself, but if I do, I’ll record the process. Thx for the comment
With my set-up, zero rubbing at full articulation. Your tire selection will be 34.1 tall vs mine at 33.8, however, yours will be 10” wide vs mine at 11.2”. I will go 285/75 R17 every time; personal choice. 👍🏻🙌
My hope is that the slight offset in width vs height will still avoid rubbing. I’m also going to mount on stock wheels first and add spacers if needed. If you ever find yourself around someone with the same wheel and tire combo, lmk if you test fit them lol
Thanks for your great videos, I have installed same lift kit as well as same BMC and did viper cut, did you do any other trimming such as pinch hammer the weld or anything else in order to be able to fit 34s?
I installed an Icon Stage 2, a BMC and BF Goodrich KO2’s 285/75/17 and have rubbing in the wheel well on the back side near the outer edge. I plan to trim the liner a couple of inches up from the bottom. Should I be having this rub?
Great question. I could drive it for years and do plenty of light off-roading without changing gears, however, I plan to re-gear to 4.88’s so I can confidently do more aggressive trails. I’ll be installing a front locker when I have the new gears installed (not a task I’ll be tackling).
The awning setup I have (Slumberjack) actually requires expanding poles, and that’s where I keep them. I made it myself out of PVC pipe, an end cap, and screw on closure. I painted it with a slightly textured fender well spray paint; it seems to be holding up well.
Yes, in 17x8.5 and zero offset. I filmed it months ago, then has a knee injury I’m just now recovering from. I actually started editing the video last Saturday. Just need some free time to bang it out. They fit perfectly.
There are many options, but all have an associated cost. I currently run the receiver hitch mounted one made by RIGd, which also has my camp table, Rotopax mount, and highlift Jack mount.
It’s the Ironman Foam Cell Pro. I had planned on upgrading to King or Fox, however, the on and off-road performance has been great, so no plans to change.
“Have to” is a subjective question. I drove mine on road, and mild Offroad, before I regeared without issue, though the speedo and shift points were off. I did not attempt any hard off-roading until I had regeared to 4.88’s. I also added a front locker when I did the gears.
Hi! Have you been able to check if you rub at all while fully articulating and at full lock? Really wondering if I should just stick with 285/70/17 or go up to 285/75/17. Thanks in advance!
@@aired-downoverland9239 Awesome. Thanks for the info! Also, how is your clearance with the upper control arms? Do you think if you went 295/70/17, you would rub the UCAs?
Do you have any data on your alignment? I’m have front rear wheel well rub but you seem to be clearing with ease. Could be my -10 offset but thinking it’s more to do with the alignment.. All ears from anyone else in the comments.
A -10 offset would definitely contribute. I first ran my 34’s on the stock 7.5” wheels, with no fender well trimming, just the 3” lift and BMC…no rubbing. When I switched to the 8.5” Method wheels I immediately had fender well rubbing.
@@aired-downoverland9239 Thanks for the reply. I'm hoping to eliminate most of the rub with some alignment adjustments and trimming where needed. Great videos btw. When you address your rubbing I would love to hear or see the process. TIA
@@aired-downoverland9239 on my BMC. I think I need to go get ANOTHER alignment have them shove the tires forward more, max limit. I get rubbing during up travel while turning. Was thinking about going to a different BMC type.
When I say I have no rubbing I mean no rubbing. My suspension has been fully compressed with wheels turned, straight, forward, reverse…No rubbing, at all.
@@aired-downoverland9239 yep I’m also on a 2” rear spring and it sags a bit when I’m fully loaded for a camping trip. Do you have any issues with rubbing when flexed out?
Tim, not so far, not a single tranny code has been thrown. It’s 97 today where I live and still no codes, even on hills. I haven’t done any hardcore trails, so there is more testing to do. I’ll be installing 4.88 gears sometime this year.
That’s good to hear. I’ll be starting my bmc and lift in a week or so, I’m expecting my suspension lift to show up around the 6th. I found your videos very informative and well done. I’ll be doing a re-gear to 4.88’s as well before I jump to 35’s
I haven’t had a single failure, and I’m not being gentle with it. I did some rock crawling (4Runner version) this past weekend and was yet again surprised at the capability. Note that I also have 4.88 gears and dual lockers.
@@aired-downoverland9239 nice! I’m going to be adding some “35’s” soon. I have 3.5 inch of lift with the iron man control arms already. I’ll be doing all the cutting/trimming, next will be regearing and a tune!
It doesn’t bounce, but like all swing-out tire carriers, it moves a little. My brother has a full CBI rear bumper with a tire swing out; my RIGd moves no more than his. I can tell you it is very well built and very solid.
@@benitoperez4883 Make sure you tighten the set screw to the required torque, if you haven’t already. It will move a little, but not enough to worry about👍🏻
good vid, but let's make something transparent for everyone dreaming of this.. Making it work on road is much different than making it work off road. You'll rub off road 100% and possibly damage components. Takes $$$$ to make 34 -35 work off road properly. Good content however.
@@ndover3505 Absolutely. I included the detailed specs at the end of the video to ensure those who were interested in specifics would have them available.
@@aired-downoverland9239 for some strange reason tires sized in inches are always undersized. i just got some 255-85-16 toyo MTs to avoid the cab mount chop and they have a 106" circumference. Unfortunately a CMC wont pass inspection here.
Matthew, the shift points are off a little, as compared to optimal. As a daily street and light Offroader it would be ok. If, however, you plan on some more aggressive offroading, re-gearing is advisable. I’ll be going with 4.88’s later this month, and a front air locker.
