*Please note: Scott's comments on Katie's American friends coming to stay on the island in this episode are meant to be humorous - as intended. Please do not choose to take offence. Without the help of our State-side friends, none of this would be possible.

Think that was your best vlog yet ! It had everything. Beautiful filming and photos ( especially of the ice and frost on the shore line ) cute sheep , history, making your own hay net with the sound of the rain and clock ticking in background ( which reminded me of my gran/ grandads house 😊) but best of all your humour ! “ Well I’ve just banged my head on that arch for the last time ! “ , sorry Scott for your pain but you crack me up , you too Katie , I love your smirk when you’re up to something. Look forward to the next vlog 👍

I appreciate how you mention history and the daily lives of everyday people. I get a little sensitive about my ancestors and have wondered if they prayed for us . I’m an American, my ancestry is Scottish and Irish and a few other things. I’ve wondered at times if I were to go to Scotland or Ireland, would it feel familiar . Why is it we have a longing for a place we’ve never been to. God knows that and maybe that’s why He has told us where our true home is.
@TheScottishIsle
@TheScottishIsle 6 месяцев назад
It's my belief that we feel that way because we know inherently that ancestry is important. Just look at the genealogies recorded throughout the Bible...your family tree is what makes you who you are. Root and Branch! 🤍 Kx
@dottiebaker6623
@dottiebaker6623 6 месяцев назад
I'm not sure why, but my both my sister and I have felt that same longing, that same connection to Scotland, for a long time. I learned to play the bagpipes in high school. She married a man (American) who is descended from William Wallace, her hobby is Scottish Country dancing, and they've been to Scotland. It makes us wonder if our family was originally from there.

My husband is 6'4" and I am also tall, and we both felt your pain. Nothing worse than hitting ones head. Ugh! I love how enthusiastic the sheep were about the lovely treat. They never cease to amaze me with the level of understanding and intelligence that they have. That tree was awesome. I could see it being the perfect tree for a house. I love the trees when all of the leaves are gone. I love seeing the pattern of their branches. They are a work of art, in themselves. Nothing better or sometimes, crueler than nature and yet, so beautiful. Thank you.

The wood reminds me of when I was a boy of 6 and got a Rupert book to keep me entertained on a long train journey . I vividly remember feeling i didn't like that kind of wood. I lived in Canada, and the trees grew straight and tall. English trees (and apparently Scottish trees as well) had to contend with less sun and longer periods of cool weather and tended to be more contorted, thicker and stockier... Gives a gloomy look. Likely not true for all of the trees in Britain.

Katie, I love your mini-essays about everything and anything. And your net bag did the trick with the hay. I guess wool is OK with the sheep, eh? And Scott, your shots of the frost are beyond words wonderful. I'm puzzled about the frozen water, though. I was assuming you looked out onto a bay off the ocean. Or am I just totally misinformed about sea water being too salty to freeze? Also, I just love the "new"music. Stay warm!
@TheScottishIsle
@TheScottishIsle 6 месяцев назад
I think that particular bay is just so secluded and still, that it does freeze. I've never seen frozen seawater either...maybe the fact that it's close to land and some freshwater running off the hill means the saline content isn't that high? Kx

I read on facebook from some non-vloggers, complaining about the vloggers they watch -- as you say, they do not understand! I have a channel too, and I film by myself. Unless you want a really boring video, you have to move your camera, get yourself at different angles. Ugh! It is quite time consuming to pre-craft the editing, and then edit again later. You both are doing a marvelous job, and never listen to the whiners out there! :) I'm surprised (as a non-sheep owner) that they need heat lamps with their fleeces and the nice shelter. Also, when you say you will be building up livestock, is that more sheep, or other kinds of livestock?

The island seems to be a lot bigger than I thought. You are still exploring what you have and finding new interesting views. I am a former postman and I am ashamed of the treatment of your mail. I always had an empathetic way of looking at my delivery. Would you want your mail delivered in such a damaged condition? Happy Holidays.

The official posties seem to have a lot more integrity (Royal Mail), David, but some companies in particular are terrible! You know, back in the 50s/60s, the PO had their own boat over on the mainland, and one of their posties would row over to the little inhabited islands here, in all weathers. Men took pride in their work, as you say. Kx

Bree has . . . a bow-legged wattle going on. It's so cute! That said, I'm wonering how the cottage is doing; you mentioned that you'd just experienced your coldet night, so far, Scott. Several videos back, one of you said that the cottage ws holding heat better after removing added-on wall coverings. Is that still the case, with the colder temperature? And, I don't want anyone to feel like they're reading a longg novel, do you see the northern lights? 💙💙

The cottage is incredibly warm throughout the day and night. The Victorian stove creates so much heat that it stays within the living room long after it has gone out. The stone is retaining all of the heat and it always warm to the touch. The only rooms which the very cold temperatures can be felt in are the small hallway and room behind the central door and the bathroom. Unfortunately, we have yet to see the aurora here.

Thank you; I feel it's important to weave it into His beautiful natural creation while we try to showcase it. Kx

Something to, maybe, help you climb up, and down, a hill is to walk sideways. Like walking uphill in a pair of skis. And walk in a more zig-zag pattern. Like a cut-back road. ❤

Enjoying your podcasts very much. Questions: Since it’s an island, how is your electricity furnished? And why does it matter where the deer roam? How many buildings are on the island and how big is the island? The trees are absolutely beautiful there!!!

You'll find the answers to your questions in various vids already. 😊 There are electricity cables which come across the sea, by the channel where we cross over to the mainland. The deer fence keeps them out of the cultivated part of the island. There are just a handful of buildings, including ruins. Kx

I've heard a lot about the harsh life on the islands but you two look like it's fun . Do you still have an antiques business or isn't it possible living there with the deliveries being difficult ?

We're not doing any of that at the moment. Maybe in time we can get to know some locals who have junk lying around outbuildings. Kx
