The first of The Railway Touring Company, The Royal Duchy is suitably hauled by the last steam locomotive to cross the Tamar at the end of B.R. steam: 34067 Tangmere. In bright sunshine and strong breeze we pick up the light pacific hurrying down the Culm Valley at Rewe. After the Exeter water-stop, 34067 picks up speed across Marsh Barton for a high speed run down the Exe. Last but not least, we see the crossing of the Royal Albert Bridge over the Tamar to Saltash, resplendent in new coating and finally devoid of all scaffolding and covers. But as one local confided to me, referring to the approach spans: “pity they couldn’t have finished it!” Pleased to get the panning speed right whilst the train is out of sight in Saltash we see her picking up speed over Coombe-by-Saltash Viaduct and finally disappearing around the headland to Wearde Quay. It is always ominous when you see Tavistock Junction “passed” but then no report for Hemerdon on Realtime Trains and such was the case on the return as Tangmere stalled on the bank giving the title of this clip an unfortunate double meaning! The clip posted by moormanpete • A Day of Steam, Tornad... shows no slip and full steam pressure and as a BoB would normally only need 80% of full tractive effort to lift 9 coaches up a 1 in 42 by my calculation, there must have been something seriously wrong with Tangmere on this outing as confirmed by it's withdrawal from the 5th Aug. Weymouth tour.

Sorry I'm late Alan, still catching up but feel the need to comment!!!! Excellent panning, got so involved with looking at your usual excellent scenery shots I forgot I was watching Tangmere and out she popped right on target!!! Yet again you give us the non standard view of Brunels' bridge - nice, makes the train look tiny.

Thanks for the posting,well shot as usual.As one of your subscribers commented i was on board.It at went wrong at Plymouth,a heavy shower,lots of slip and that was it.Not enough speed to climb the bank.Yes we were pulled back by a shunter from Laira and transfered to F.G.W, for the trip back home.Still a good day.

Hi Tony, many thanks for the nice comment and the interesting information. As of now, Tangmere is still "undergoing repairs" whatever that means and did not haul the Dorset Coast last week. From a video posted of the start at Plymouth it looks like there was serious priming and therefore water in the valves and cylinders when they tried to move off. If so, this can be a big problem for the chain operated valves on an unrebuilt Bullied. It looks like the loco could not achieve full cut-off on the bank from the video I mention in the description, like a car stuck in high gear. It will be interesting to find out what the problem really was. I am glad that you had a good day and you even got back only 30 mins late we are told! Alan

Thank you for your excellent quality videos. I have been a long time replying, but have just seen this again. Regarding Tangmere on Hemerdon, I knew people on the train. They report that it did slip badly. Hemerdon is 2 miles long and it slipped very badly at Plympton-Langage. If it slips very badly in the wet, that's it, it won't re-start I'm sure. Even X Country trains have come to grief here in recent times, (and to my inconvenience) as well as other trains that slip and jerk occasionally,...on which I have been, (about twice weekly). So although our good friend Moorman Pete filmed it, it was long after, power off and gently coming to a stop. The calculations may show otherwise, but get the wrong conditions...(certain) slimy leaves and there can be problems. As I say, when it left the busiest station (for passenger numbers) west of Bristol, it looked like there may likely be problems. Thanks again, and keep up the good quality work!

Hi Richard and many thanks for your kind remarks and for your interesting information. Tangmere does not seem to have had a very good year and is, even now, undergoing repairs and missing scheduled tours. Let's hope that things improve next year. Regards, Alan

Yes I agree, I think it had its problems. Sometimes I get frustrated when things don't go well' as there is always a risk that there will be cancellations. A very good engine when it is steaming well..It was not a very good year in the S. W. Thanks Alan, I look forward to your work next time.

Hi Alan, Great clips at some good locations, liked the Tamar crossing very much (even though I live in Plymouth I have not been to the bridge location this year so was nice to see it without the scaffolding) and as you say the pan came out very well. Enjoyed the video very much. ....Pete

Hi Pete and many thanks for your kind comments. I had originally planned to go down under the trees on the corner on Hemerdon but decided to shoot nearer to home at Coombe Fishacre in the end .......... mistake!! Still no news on what went wrong with Tangmere, she is certainly amassing a good deal of bad press at the moment in marked contrast to almost faultless performance last year! Best regards, Alan

It goes down well enough, but it appears it's not always so keen on going back up... One rumour had it that it was rescued by a shunter from Laira and taken back to Plymouth, though I've only seen that mentioned somewhere on here. If that was so, that would be something worth seeing.

Hi Andrei: poor old Tangmere she gets so much flack but was never designed to climb mountains. Whatever happened to back-up diesels which you always saw travelling a short time before or after? I am awaiting a response from Tony Bell on my Torbay Express posting who was actually on the Duchy, so keep looking there for a first hand report. Regards, Alan

I was on that trip that day and there must of been something wrong as there was a lot of trouble pulling away from stops it would go back and forth a lot. And leaving plymouth on way back was even worse. Went forward a tiny bit then immediately went back about 6 meters. A few people was saying it was a incompetent driver but I disagree with that. Granted we did have a few slips leaving Plymouth station but we had some rain. Defiantly something wrong with tangmere.

Rustyrally Hi and many thanks for your very interesting and most informative message. The back & forth that you describe on trying to start at Plymouth plus a video posting of the same leads me to believe that severe priming (water in the cylinders and valves) was to blame. Do you recall them blowing out the cylinders more than usual? this expelled a lot of water which led to the slipping right from the start, but by then the valve events were probably disrupted leading to the problem on Hemerdon where you can see by the exhaust that full cut-off was not available, almost like a car being stuck in high gear. It will be interesting to hear what they discovered back at base and if there is any major damage! Best regards, Alan

What class locomotive is this?
@Steamclips
@Steamclips 6 лет назад
Hi and thank you for your question. These locomotives were known as "West Country" class, and named after West Country Cities, however some were named after "Battle of Britain" airbases such as "Tangmere", reflecting a national sentiment after WW2. Many were later rebuilt with outside valve gear and without the cladding, e.g."Bodmin" Regards, Alan

You are wrong. Not only did you not mention Plymouth, but Tangmere did slip, (Very badly) At Plymouth, Devon's major city, but also on Hemerdon. In steam days I believe the load for a Castle, more capable than this light Pacific was 8 coaches and a King 9. If you view the departure, it slipped very badly and had several attempts to start, particularly as it was wet. On Hemerdon this was a disaster waiting to happen and plays right into the hands of Network Rail for a complete ban. Were I on platform 7 (8) I would have said to the driver 'You're not in your wildest dreams going to attempt Hemerdon, are you? - even if it was running well. Pity they can't get the Princess, Duchess, A1 Tornado. Clan Line, King, Duke of Gloucester (when running well), or the extremely capable A2 Blue Peter and stick to those! Good quality filming. well done.

Hello Richard and thank you for your passionate comments, I quite understand the way you feel. More videos and reports have been posted since I first published this clip which supports my proposal that something was seriously wrong with the loco, possibly caused by priming looking at the depart from Plymouth. You rightly say about the light loading of locos at the end of steam but these limits were set to allow for the generally run down nature of most of the fleet. The calculation I made about a BoB are theoretical and although there might have been slipping on the bank, the loco did not slip to a stand, it just slowed and stopped and was clearly not capable of applying full cut-off, a bit like a car stuck in high gear. I guess we all look forward to finding out what the real problem was. I am glad that you enjoyed the clip and thank you for your kind words. Regards, Alan

Thank you Alan for your good remarks and I take your point about the faulty loco. I have seen it on Hemerdon in the past and when it has good traction, no problem, but I am somewhat concerned in the wet. This can apply to any, of course, including those I mentioned, which have failed because of poor running (as The Duke). Incidentally, last November, when waiting for the London train at Newton Abbot, there was a very long delay and the Cross Country train due just before got later and later, until it was cancelled. I found out it failed on a slippery Hemerdon! Again, thank you for your good quality work

Apparently not but if this was an adhesion problem, even diesels get caught out sometimes. The real problem was the time it took to rescue and clear the line! Alan

If only Tangmere's Driver would learn to stop overworking her. She's an engine who requires Tender Loving Care. Yes, she was designed for creating dramatic scenes, but that's no reason to push her to the limit so. I'll bet one day, in the middle of a mainline tour or something, she'll be so worn out, complete withdrawal from service could loom over her for good. Let's hope and pray there's someone out there, who can teach her footplate crew just how gentle they should be with her, or her days out will be numbered. Please you guys, don't push the engine to the limit so, or it could end in sorrow of the engine never being able to work again. I may not love Tangmere in the same way as I love Foxcote Manor, but I care about the Southern Engine.

Passionate words there Kelly and I am sure that you are right. The "Spam Cans" did have their problems and needed to be treated carefully, as I was lead to believe by B.R. crews I talked to at Exeter St Davids back in the 1960's. Regards, Alan
