This talk on Gustav Klimt and my associated talk on Egon Schiele provide the background to their work and briefly describes the life of each artist.
Klimt was a shy man who said little yet he headed up the artistic reform movement in Vienna, called the Secession Movement. The role meant that he had to increasingly defend his art which was regarded by the establishment as more and more unacceptably erotic yet he continued to be a successful society portrait painter of the wives and daughters of the rich and powerful.
The talk explores the culture in Vienna at the turn of the century, Klimt's life and influences, his early murals, the Vienna Secession, his Beethoven Frieze and works from his 'golden period'.

He was backed by big money, Modern art was not an organic movement nor was was it ever anti establishment.
