Edvard Munch (1863-1944) said, "Nature is not only all that is visible to the eye... it also includes the inner pictures of the soul."
In this talk I focus primarily on Edvard Munch's paintings rather than his drawings and engravings. I cover his life chronologically and interweave his life story with his paintings.

Thank you for this great video Dr.Shafe. I was lucky to view many Munch's artworks in Oslo Norway years ago, very impressive.

Well researched .One of the screams is painted on cardboard the one that was stolen & later retrieved ,god knows how it survived .They've now built a new museum building to house his work.🙂

Would you ever consider doing a talk on Vrubel?

An important artist who I mentioned at the beginning of my talk on Russian art (1890-1930), about 4:00 minutes in. I have no plans to base a complete talk on Vrubel.

Hello Dr Shafe, how am I supposed to feel about what I think is a mistake on a painting. For example, when a toe is bigger than the other toe? Will this overshadow the overall impression of the work? Thank you.

An artist may not be interested in a naturalistic representation, for example, in Munch's 'The Scream'. That is fine as the distortion conveys a feeling. At other times the distortion feels like a distraction and once noticed disturbs your appreciation. However, I have often found that once I get to know a piece well those distortions became like the oddities of a friend, just part of what makes them who they are.
