Does Nevada have some cool back way roads to explore?
Absolutely!
Longest ride yet on the Suzuki DR650, this trip was a test to see how the upgrades on the DR held up. I was shooting for at least 300 miles but ended up getting just over 350. This gave me a little time for off the bike exploring.
I decided to head west out of Utah due to storms, saving the high country for the following week when it clears. This worked out well since the weather brought down the temps. Passing through a few small towns in Southeastern Nevada and winding up in a really awesome area out in the desert that turned out to have a bunch of rock art, I'd say the ride was awesome!
The new seat and lowered foot pegs made the ride comfortable for the majority of the time, once I hit 300 miles I started to ache a bit but getting off the bike and walking around fixed that. Initially I didn't mind not having a wind shield but the push back on Interstate 15 in a heavy head wind had me changing my mind on adding a wind shield. All in all, extremely positive ride on the DR650. If I can do 350 miles in relative comfort then I can do 500 miles. This bike is going to see some country!

I have one DR-650 and I love it. It’s not a fancy bike with technology but very reliable. It takes me whatever place I want to go. I’ve rode it in Everglades trails with muddy and water holes 2-3 foot deep without no issues.

The DR650 is still a versatile, fantastic value... especially considering the availability of used and aftermarket parts.

You know that scene in My Cousin Vinny, when they are sleeping in that motel next to the train tracks? You can recreate that scene in Caliente. Trains run through that place at all times of the night!

Thinking about 350 miles in one day makes my butt hurt! Sargent Seat with memory foam pad, Madstad windshield, cruising pegs, throttle lock and I’m still only good for a couple of hundred miles at one time..

It's good to see other dr riders out there. Great set up. If I could make a comfort recommendation. Lower front crash bars, for the sake of available highway peg placement! Makes cruising miles on the Dr so much more enjoyable!

Absolutely. That was on my mind, making something work on the crash guard so I could use it for highway pegs. Thanks for watching!

Maps say cathedral gorge state park is 550 miles and 8:30 hours from me. I may want to find a place to stay midway. I’d at least need stop for a meal.

Can’t wait too see the Himalayan do the Hell Hole ride. I for one would be interested in a pros and cons video between the KLR, DR, and Himalayan. I have a 22 KLR 650 that is set up pretty close to yours. I traded a DRZ400 because it was miserable on the highway in West Texas. The DR looks like it could be a happy middle ground. Thanks for the videos.

You're very welcome, appreciate you watching! Interesting, I was under the impression the DRZ400 would do ok on the highway. Not enough power, too light? Curious because I've thought about trading in my 300L on a DRZ400. Love my DR650 now that I replaced the seat and lowered the foot pegs. It handles the highway just fine for me.
@larrytucker1945
@larrytucker1945 11 месяцев назад
@@precipiceofgrind the DRZ had plenty of power but it’s really wound up at highway speeds, and that’s coming from a KLR owner. I also couldn’t ever get it to handle well over 65 mph with knobbies. Our backroad speed limit is 75 mph, but even going 65mph for long the wind blast straight to the chest( you sit much higher on the bike than most dual sports) was exhausting. Instability and just uncomfortable for traveling long distance on highways, but I loved it for everything else. Wish I had kept it and bought the KLR in addition. It is great how you have or are interested in every bike I am. Will keep watching

I also have the ‘23 DR650 same color. Love it! Put 4,500 miles on it already. You can easily get 120 miles on stock tank! I’ve switched to reserve anywhere between 105-115 miles. I think you can safely do 140 miles before you’re completely empty. After that it’s uncharted territory. Btw, the parabellum rally windshield imo is a must for highway riding! A noticeable difference and keeps the wind off your chest. Trust me. I also used spray on plasti dip to black out about 40% of the windshield on top. This helps the headlight reflection you get at night with the windshield for some reason and gives it a cool look besides. Another good investment in general is get the Cyclops H4 led headlight, upgraded to Ultra for another $10. It’s plug n play, super easy install and really really lights up road at night and makes you super visible in day. Enjoy!

Grey Acerbis Tank is definitely in order, that and the seat. With the stock seat, you might have made it 50 miles :-) My brother had a DR and that was the first things he installed. Like to pick up a DR650 in the near future, but very happy with the 22 KLR

Dude, when that band of storms made it to I-15, it was a torrential downpour all the way from STG to Cedar. Can’t say I’ve ever been stuck in a rainstorm that bad here in Southern Utah for 40-50 miles straight. Glad you didn’t get pounded with it too bad, because it definitely intensified as it traveled eastward. That rock outcropping with the petroglyphs definitely seems like a neat spot to visit! I’ve still got a ton of exploring to do out that way, myself. I just did Rainbow Canyon from Caliente for the first time a couple weeks ago. Freakin awesome route! Highly recommended for you to check out! There’s a number of petroglyph/pictograph sites along that route too (nothing too spectacular, but still fun to see). I found a couple panels, but it was 95°, so I didn’t feel like wandering around for too long in the heat. The second half of Rainbow Canyon turns to dirt after the Elgin School House and I’ve yet to try that. Definitely gonna do the whole route out to Hwy 93 next time I’m out there! For some reason, the Elgin School House is closed right now, so I wasn’t able to explore the grounds of that. Right next to it, I saw a dirt route with a sign that said Caliente via Pennsylvania Canyon. It looked like it might be a neat technical route back to Caliente from Elgin. Might have to give that a shot sometime too! Also, I don’t know if you’re aware, but there is a dirt route from Enterprise that links up with Hwy 56 before Panaca. That’s a fun little route too with some interesting rock formations, and I’ve still gotta branch out a bunch from that gravel track… Amazing country out here, bro! I’ve put on about 350-400 miles on my 250 Rally in a day a couple times and it definitely can beat you up if there’s a lot of wind. At least the DR’s got a little bit more weight to it, especially with you having it loaded, so it may be “slightly” better in the wind. These valleys out here can really suck the energy outta ya on those days with heavy crosswinds. Hell, even on my Goldwing the wind out here can really test my mettle 😂. Great adventure, as always, dude! Like you, I’m definitely waiting for the heat to break (even here in Cedar). Next week I should be cleared to return to normal activity after a disc replacement I had in my neck in May. I can’t wait to get back out on some awesome adventures, myself! I’ve been missing out on so much fun this summer, but it’s all good. Had to get everything taken care of before it continued to get worse. Keep up the good work and I’ll catch ya on the next one 🤙.

Nice trip. Great video. I’m virtually bone stock in my 21 DR up here in Canada (cheap rail rack and a battery tender wired in). You’re good for 120 miles of tame riding like that. I push my tanks and have yet to run dry. Still figuring out where that point is. It’s over 130 miles somewhere. What’s the bar bag you’re using there and is it waterproof? That’s the item I’m most interested in adding atm. Keep up the travels !

Appreciate you watching! I've since upgraded to the Acerbis 6.6 gallon tank and now have a range of over 300 miles on a tank. Bar bag is the Giant Loop Zigzag bag, don't know if they still make it.

Hi. New to watching channel. Quite liking it. I am looking to purchase a DR650 for a few of the gravel roads up here in western Canada Curious-I see that you running 91! octane. One of the reason I am looking at the DR is to get away from having to run the high octanes that my BMW requires. Many of the small towns only carry 87 octane and diesel. That's it.

I'm doing some research on my next bike and I'm torn between a DR650 and a CRF300. For someone that prefers casual riding down FS roads, jeep trails and would eventually want to do a BDR, which would you recommend? I live in southern CA.
