The "proud" in the title is in respect of the wreath carried on the smokebox upper "disc" bracket in tribute to the passing of David Shepherd; artist, conservationist and pioneer of steam preservation in the U.K., may his legacy live on.
Summer briefly returns to the Westcountry for the postponed running of UK Railtours, Atlantic Coast Express: London Victoria to Exeter with the outward leg on “Southern” metals and homeward via the Great Western. We pick up the action at Templecombe with its Art Deco “Control Tower” and Southern Green signage. It all looks a tight squeeze as 35028 cruises up the bank on single track between the trees to the sound of the church clock chiming 11 o'clock and culminating in a dramatic pass which is not as close as it appears! At the top of the bank the trees which blocked my view of 35028 back in July 2011 have now all been cleared (credit to “GC Met” for his recent upload showing the present situation). The sun can be the photographers best friend but also his worst enemy and so it proved here with a powerful sun straight into the lens creating almost impossible filming conditions, however 35028 has now opened the regulator and the wonderful sounds she creates is ample compensation for the challenging visuals. Heavy traffic on the A303 meant I was limited to a quick grab shot by the Umborne Brook of the assault of Honiton Bank but this gave me time to film the depart from Honiton after a scheduled wait for a passing service train where excitement is provided by young children as the big pacific passes beneath. Finally to Burlescombe and Whiteball Tunnel where the sun lays down one last challenge and once more the incredible sound of 35028 with open regulator almost relegates the visuals to second place.

How the heck have I missed this one, Bulleid Pacific, Art Deco and Southern Green - my idea of heaven. As previously noted, you can't beat that sound. A perfect tribute to a great artist and railway preservationist. Thanks Alan, another lesson in photographic artistry - to be honest I didn't really notice the sun!!!

Incredible! That same chapel bell sounds on a recoding I have made in 1956 by Peter Handford of No 35020 Bibby Line passing on an express at that very same location!

Hi Matt: thank you for your kind feedback and observations. It is a good job I did a two camera shot there as it is not often the "going away" is more interesting than "the approach"! Best regards, Alan

Very impressive slights and sounds. Nice to see the clip of Templecombe- I've got a print of a 1950s shot of my favourite- 30453- calling at the old Templecombe 'Upper' hung up at home so it's nice to see steam passing through the modern version- Southern signal box and all.

Superb video Alan. Some excellent shots of the great sounds of Clan lLineAt work. We always complain about not having much sunshine, but also complain when we do. It never in the right place when we need it. Kind regards C&A

Hi C&A: I was filming next to Karl Jauncey (PSOV) and we made a right moaning couple!! but after the pass we had big smiles on our faces! Thanks as always for the lovely feedback. Best wishes, Alan

Hi David: credit where credit is due and thank you for your kind words. Luckily I crossed the field with the footpath then popped out onto the top of the cutting further down the line. Karl Jauncey (PSOV) was not so lucky and had a real fight to get through to where you and I filmed. Best regards, Alan

Brilliant footage of a fantastic engine. I'm a railfan from the U.S. with a passion for English steam. Question: What is the steam coming from the rear of the coal bunker on the tender?
@spuds4t
@spuds4t 6 лет назад
Steam pressurised cylinders for the braking system.
@Steamclips
@Steamclips 6 лет назад
Hi Robert and thank you for your kind feedback and question. The steam from the tender is from a Westinghouse air-pump which has been retro-fitted in order to pull air-braked stock. Originally British stock was vacuum braked but most of that stock now resides in preservation. Other mainline certified locos have their air-pumps mounted on the engine, either on view (as in the U.S.A.) or hidden between the frames, in which case the steam exhaust is emitted from a dedicated port in the funnel. Best regards, Alan

So it wasn't hindered by the clearance restriction that meant Cromwell had to slow to a crawl under that bridge then? Terrific sound effects there.
@Steamclips
@Steamclips 6 лет назад
No Andrei, there was no 30m.p.h. restriction this time which, in the dry, might have completely ruined the shot. Thanks for your always appreciated comments. Best regards, Alan

Likely hour chimes from the church tower, which can be seen in some S&D photos.
@Steamclips
@Steamclips 6 лет назад
I think you must be right Ted as I have just gone back over the original recording and counted 11 chimes. Interestingly Realtime gave the actual pass of Templecombe as 10:59 3/4 so either the church clock is fast or Realtime timing was early! Regards, Alan

Superb video. Sorry to show my ignorance but why is there steam coming from the tender, shown very clearly around 2:20? Is there a coal pusher?

Steam air compressor for the air brakes I think?

Second clip, 2:14: why is there steam coming out of the tender? Again at 5:31. The brake reservoirs are there, but should be dry air. Thoughts, anyone? Is that the vent for the condensate after the injectors have generated the compressed air, and so the system allows the steam used to escape the reservoirs before entering the brake lines?
@Steamclips
@Steamclips 6 лет назад
Hello Tom and thank you for your question. You are not the first to ask so please refer to my reply to Robert Kessler below for a full answer. Regards, Alan
@tomlawton7087
@tomlawton7087 6 лет назад
Alan, Thanks for the information you gave below. Sorry for not having read the previous questions in detail; I normally do, and somehow missed this conversation. Good to work out that the compressor is powered by steam, but not running as injectors (old-school). But with the reservoirs mounted on the back of the tender, it is only logical that the compressor would not be between the frames of the loco. Regards, Tom

I agree with Steven's comment about the "three-cylinder" gallop it reminds me of some of Beethoven's works the 3rd movement of the "Emperor" concerto and the 1st of the Seventh Symphony...
@Steven_Rowe
@Steven_Rowe 6 лет назад
David Crook David I think the very epitome of the 3 cylinder gallop was by Gresley engines and f course non did it better than than the V2 Not to sue why the v2 sounded better A3s but they did. I agree with you about Beethoven.

It was listening to Peter Handford's recordings that initially brought the Beethoven connection to mind!

Well if the crew at Valley Hights museum ever get funding, maybe the D57 up there can entertain us with it's "chuckles"? I'd fly over from Perth to see that. ~smiles ~
