On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we will be comparing the performance of the 10mm to the 357 magnum on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points (winner takes all), for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 10 yards. Both great rounds. I would choose either for self defense. The .357 I think is a bit more abundant and in a pinch, you can shoot a 9mm from a .357 revolver.

@@bananaballistics what do you think about .357 SIG? You take a 10 mm casing, and melt it around a 9 mm bullet, so it's 9 x 22 + wider case. But, I look at the straight wall 9x21, 9x23, and see better numbers?

Thanks for the video BB!!! Having read some of the comments and the various opinions poking holes in the testing, I would like to point out a few things. 1) Yes, the testing involves 2 different platforms. These are the platforms that are commonly available and the test is therefore sound. A) I'm sure there are folks with the resources or have been able to acquire matching platforms for these two calibers. Fantastic!!!! Unfortunately there are a larger number of folks without these advantages...me included. 2) This is for fun, which I greatly enjoyed!!! 3) Regardless, I'm still looking around for a revolver and lever action in the same caliber. Why? Why not? Having acquired the semi-auto's I'm after, IMO, the revolver is an elegant firearm with functionality and the same for the lever action carbine. Most importantly, I want at least one of each. I appreciate the time, thought and effort that you're putting into these videos. Subbed

Great video. In my line of work (Bigfoot Scientist), I need a sidearm that has a lot of stopping power and carrying capacity but is also relatively light and reliable. I used to carry a .357 revolver but have recently switched to a 10mm. Hoping the trade off in reliability doesn’t come back to bite me.

I agree with gallantmouse898. It appears that they are both equal. I prefer .357. I had a 681 it was a hoot to shoot. Plus you can put .38 rounds in for a less expensive target practice round. The .357 has been around for a very long time and there's not much to tweak on it. The 10 mm, in comparison, is relatively new. A lot better than the 9 mm. But if I had my preference, I'd choose a Colt 1911 .45 ACP. That weapon was considered to come back into service over the 9 mm because of its knockdown power. I was issued & qualified both on the 1911 and the Berretta (sp?) and everyone of my fellow officers and NCOs preferred the 1911s. Just saying.

Anyone else wondering, why the individual ammo for each isn't discussed... I mean the first test are looking for penetration yet hollow points are bring used. You don't want excessive penetration with hollow points. Steel test should have been done with at least jacketed flat or round (bonded solid core even better).

I have a case of Fed American Eagle 158gr JSP that I bought years ago that leaves my 6" GP100 stainless at about 1400 fps even. I remember being impressed when I chrono'd it years ago. I agree, using H110 you should be able to get a lot more velocity from that 686, but you are at max load so ???. I have seen articles in the past where someone tested a few different makes of revolvers of the same barrel length and was very surprised by the difference in velocity with the same load.

idk what morons compare 10mm to 44mag, but some 10mm fanboys compare it to 41 mag. Since it's also closer to that diameter. however, at over 6 inch barrel, hottest loads of 357 mag is superior to 10mm, and at carbine barrel length, the difference is insurmountable. 10mm does perform much better out of shorter barrel like glock 29 than snub nose 357 mag. The reason 10mm is favoured is its capacity, capability and modifiability for faster target reacquisition via lighter trigger pull, heavier recoil spring assy slide action to reduce recoil, and even vertical compensator to help put sight picture back on target in a more controlled and speedy manner than double-action revolvers. Optics that help put rounds on moving target are neat plus (especially against faster feline predators), but for bear defense, which is for why lot of 10mm semi-auto are bought, you dont need anything more than an overextending underbarrel flashlight attachment or a compensator in case you have to shoot against its fur and dont want slide to go out of battery

Thank you. My introduction to the .357 Magnum was my buddy who had his father's service revolver, a Colt Python, from the 70's and early 80's. We went camping in White Salmon, WA across from Hood River and we all brought our guns for some fun. After I shot his Colt Python that weekend I fell in love with the .357 and immediately went to the local gun store and looked for a Python. Obviously I found out they were hard to find and expensive if you found one. So, they had Ruger, S&W, Taurus, et al. So, I ended up getting the Ruger because it was in my price range. The "poor man's revolver" I guess. Funny thing is those Buffalo Bore's state on the box 'For use in Ruger Revolvers only.' Guess I picked right. RIP to my buddy Ryan who introduced me to the venerable. 357.

If 2 or 3 doesn’t do the job an extra 9 rounds won’t help because that bear is eating you by then. Semiautomatics are great, love 1911s in .45ACP, but at my age shooter induced failure is more likely and the revolver just handles a misfire easier under pressure.

357 mag out of a rifle is an amazing round the velocity increase over a revolver can be something like 600fps. With the right ammo you can have a 158 gr bullet at close to 2,000 fps.
@Sparks52
@Sparks52 4 месяца назад
Elmer Keith's original .357 Magnum load as a 158 grain bullet at 1525 fps. Many loads today are much less than that. Takes about 12.5 -13.0 grains of 2400 rifle powder to get Keith's original 816 ft-lb muzzle energy ballistics. I used to load my own to that using semi-jacketed hollow points 50 years ago. Today I buy factory loads as close to that as I can. If I were reloading again the alternate powders would be 14.5 grains of W296, or 16.5 grains of Lil' Gun. Underwood has a factory load with 158 grain bullet, rated at 1500 fps muzzle velocity.

According to Hodgdon's current online data, you can use H-110/Win 296 ( same powder, now) and 16.7 grains will give you 1591 fps with a 158 JHP. Your data for the W296/H-110 is a little light and below minimum safe load density. Note that using W296 or H-110 there really aren't any reduced loads, as it needs full pressure to achieve proper combustion. Light loads can generate wicked pressures and are potentially dangerous. We always used to do 18 grs of W296 and a 125 gr JHP for fabulous loud booms and fireballs, but that load is now under minimum load density... It now calls for a MINIMUM of 21 grs H-110/W296 / Maximum of 22 grs which generates ~ 1881 to 1966 fps and a LOT of BOOM>

Re: "slow" 357 From the archived bbti test, revolvers seem to have a point where bullets of a given weight are balanced to powder burn rate for a given cylinder gap. The harder you push a heavier bullet, the higher amount of gas is being expelled out of the cylinder gap. The longer the barrel means there is more time to ejected powder instead of push the bullet, and more friction. The ideal barrel length for 357 with normal loads appears to be about 5 inches. This is an argument why 4 inch revolvers are more than sufficient and why you were having issues in a 6 inch. The other problem with 357 mag is that it can be used in rifles up to 20 inches too. While no cylinder gap, loads optimized for pistols will be worse in lever guns. Manufacturers and reloading manuals often try to balance this which leads to it falling a bit short of optimal in both. Side note, 357 sig was optimized for 3 to 4inch barrels which is why it is not worth putting it in a rifle length barrel. Most pistol rounds top out speed at 10-12 inches or so of barrel length. If it wasnt for the NFA we wouldnt see pistol caliber carbines much longer than that. 16 inches is ok but not optimal. Thank you sig for those years ago getting the atf to give us the legal fiction that are pistol braces and the 2AF for beating the atf back on the rule change in the last years.

Cylinder gap plays a huge role in velocity in wheel guns. Most of my .357 mag. revolvers with a 6" barrel produce between 1200 and 1300 fps, but my Coonan .357 Magnum, a stretched 1911 semi-auto with a 5" barrel, inclusive of the chamber, produces 1550 fps from the same load. This why you really need to test these two cartridges side by side from the same firearm type, either revolvers or semi-auto. By testing the 10mm from a semi-auto and the .357 from a revolver, you stack the deck against the .357.

Also, when you shoot .357 magnum out of a lever gun..it can rival a .30-30 as a Deer round as well out to 100 yards!

@h2s142 yes it is, bullet weight and diameter are what you need to calculate it.

Capacity is irrelevant for what you would be using the 357 or 10mm for. People that think the 10mm is a great bear defense gun because of its capacity clearly haven’t spent much time outdoors. You’ll be lucky to get 1 or 2 shots off on a charging bear before it’s on top of you tossing you around like a rag doll. When that happens you don’t want a semi auto because you may have to make contact shots. You’re semi auto turns into a paperweight in that situation due to potentially being pushed out of battery or an inadvertent mag drop during the struggle. I’ll always go with a revolver as a wilderness sidearm.
