I recently rebuilt a 4-spring credenza motor, but ended up having a second person hold the spring above me as it was wound into the barrel. I found every time the spring touched the floor winding it on my own, it would pick up abrasive particulate. Your shop must be far cleaner than mine, lol.

You hear me say on many videos, cleanliness is next to godliness!

Enjoyed the instruction. You must have hands like leather, no gloves at all.

I saw a guy coil up the spring inside the barrel with no grease. He then slammed some grease in the middle with a spatula and close up the cover with the retaining ring. He then said that the grease would spread out throughout the whole spring after a few crank ups. It seems more efficient than to batter the spring all along. But I doubt the grease will creep back to the whole eight of the spring just by mere pressure from the tension. Would you care to make an observation on this Mr. Hurt? Thank you

I have also seen spring barrels where a little bit of grease was smeared along the top after the spring which was inserted, dry, into the barrel. That’s the lazy way to do it! I prefer to inspect the complete spring, every inch, and apply grease as I’m threading it into the spring barrel so I know the whole spring is protected and lubricated. The grease protects the metal, and I do not want metal on metal direct friction. Smearing grease along the top will not allow it to work its way along the whole length of the spring.

Great video as always really helped me out with my clip clip springs. I just have one question. I put my first clip clip spring in and it’s laying down perfectly flat except for the beginning of the spring where it clips it to the barrel. The first layer going around is about a millimetre or two above the rest of the spring. I tried to knock it flat down like the rest but it won’t move, will this be a problem or is it ok for it to be a little bit higher than the rest of the spring. Thanks

What is the brand of grease that you use?

I use “Green Grease”, a waterproof silicone grease available at any automotive hardware store.
