I'm a former Amtrak employee, we left people behind a lot at our 'fresh air breaks'...cause they didn't stay close to hear the all aboard. They had to take a cab from that city to the next in order to catch up. Also Amtrak DOES get priority, but ONLY as long as they are within their schedule time, if anything delays them, the freights get to go cause they are outside their time.

BRO YOU WONT BELIEVE ME! I was on this train! So It was the 31st, just a normal day. Except for the fact that I was going to San Francisco! We boarded the train, and quickly grabbed a table in the observation car. After being there for a while, I went back to my seat to take a nap. After sleeping for around 10 or so minutes, I went back to the observatory. When I sat down, I was a go pro strapped to a chair. I was looking at it, as it had a cool accessory around it. And behind I was a person who looked a bit familiar. And when I saw that NASA hoodie on that person, I knew exactly who it was! @Trek Trendy Regarding freight in the US: Unlike most of Europe, Amtrak does not own the majority of the track it travels on (really they only own the Acela tracks between DC and Boston). The rails Amtrak travels on are owned by various freight companies and oddly some of the commuter rails in the larger cities. So YES Amtrak will often have to yield to freight BUT there is another reason. Freight trains tend to be much, much, much, much longer than Amtrak trains and often are too long to go on the side tracks. So Amtrak trains have to get out of the way of them, like it or not. Hope that helps!
@ronclark9724

Not to mention the train dispatchers work for the freight railroads which own most of the tracks. They know who puts butter on their bread, and keep this in mind, it isn't Amtrak...

@@electrictroy2010 While I appreciate the point and I'll go on record saying that (especially at the date I'm posting this) I'm not the biggest fan of what's happening in China, I believe you're missing the point of why China and other countries are building high speed rail systems. The HSR systems are not in and of themselves profitable, I doubt they were intended to be, but they're put in place to facilitate profit in enterprises that benefit from them. It's similar to how the US road networks do the same. People who are priced out of living in larger cities can now commute large distances quickly without traffic or vehicle ownership. That stimulates growth across the board. Goods and services can be transported over great distances fast and cheaply without concerns for traffic, vehicle overhead or fuel costs. Even with the advent of electric cars and self driving subscription vehicles being less that a decade away, where efficiency is concerned, HSR wins. Capitalism does a lot of things right but I'm a firm believer that "for profit" does not solve every high level societal problem, nor should it. It's a shame we're so polar in todays world where even if there is a balance we fail to see, support or acknowledge it. The measure of greatness is not always how much money it makes, but how much good it does.

Repent and follow Jesus my friend! Repenting doesn't mean confessing your sins to others, but to stop doing them altogether. Belief in Messiah alone is not enough to get you into heaven - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Contemplate how the Roman empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years to accomplish the religion of the Israelites C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate though because you can start a relationship with God and have proof. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life. - Revelation 3:20 Revelation has been unfolding since Jesus died. The Popes have claimed to be equal to God and set themselves in Jesus' place (antichrist(s)). Vatican City (Which is its own nation BTW) have risen up to fulfill the role of the false prophet Regarding the man of lawlessness or antichrist, 2 Thessalonians 2:4 says “Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” The restrainer that the Apostle Paul was referring to in 2 Thessalonians was the Western Roman Emperor, who held back the Popes from taking power. Once the last Western Roman Emperor was removed from power in 476 AD, the Pope was given civil and ecclesiastic authority over Rome; healing the deadly head wound of the beast in Revelation 13, as they took the Emperors title of Pontifex Maximus, leader of the church and state. “We may according to the fullness of our power, dispose of the law and dispense above the law. Those whom the Pope of Rome doth separate, it is not a man that separates them but God. For the Pope holdeth place on earth, not simply of a man but of the true God.” (Source: “Decretals of Gregory IX,” Book 1, chapter 3.) Pope Pius V blasphemed, “The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth.” (Source: Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Cities Petrus Bertanous Chapter XXVII: 218.) Pope Leo XIII declared, “We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty.” (Source: Pope Leo XIII Encyclical Letter, June 20, 1894) The antichrist sea beast of Revelation points to the office of the papacy, the Popes of Rome, who controlled the Roman beast for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD. Daniel 7:25 says “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” The Popes of Rome spoke against Elohim and proclaimed to be God. They reigned for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD. during which they caused tens of millions of saints to be killed. The Pope’s title is Vicar of Christ, which in Latin is ‘Vicarius Filii Dei’, and equates numerically to the number 666

I'm truly an Amtrak fan. ! Rode L.A. to San Francisco in the late 1970's when the dining car was quite classy and there was a bar car. Also traveled on the Starlight when the Parlor car had wine and cheese tastings in the afternoon. The most interesting Starlight journey was when a friend and booked a bedroom from L.A. to Portland. We wanted to recreate the golden age of rail travel so wore suits, hats and gloves during the day. Then "dressed" for dinner in the thing car. Our black dinner dresses, high heels and evening purses raised a few eye brows. By the time we arrived in Portland we knew many other travelers. Before Covid, there were National Park Service volunteers in the observation car with information on what could be seen. I think the program was "Trails To Rails" - hopefully it will return after the pandemic. For those traveling in roomettes or bedrooms, there are is a shower room down stairs. Ask your car attendant for available times.

I took the Coast Starlight in the late 1990s and remember the parlor car as well. It was for sleeper car passengers only and it felt very posh and exclusive. I'm surprised Will didn't just take his bag with him on the train after missing baggage check-in. IIRC, the sleeper cars have a small luggage area on the lower level.

I recall many years ago with my late wife flying into Philadelphia to visit family then joining a train to Chicago before joining a train to LA then on to SF. From there we went to Winnimucka to visit family in Idaho. We then bussed to SLC to join another train to Washington DC to stay with friends before eventually flying to London & then back home to Newcastle upon Tyne. Quite an experience some 45 years ago & the trains have certainly improved.

Aww sweet memories! I've traveled north and south on this line, stopping in Sacramento, Portland and of course Seattle and LA & the Pacific really is breathtaking. I took coach and if you're a solo traveler lucky enough to get your own row, sleep is fantastic. Full disclosure, I get acid reflux so the inclined seats are a much better sleep than lying flat. Before 2020, I tend to camp out in the observation cart & this line also provides the friendliest, most communal, passengers. I recall singalongs, shared drinks & snacks, and amazing conversations. A refreshing contrast from the type A watch watchers I sit next to in first class on flights. Getting into Seattle at night, you may have missed the view of the Seattle Seahawks' Lumen stadium. Also Union Station was "gram good" Thanks for this video & supporting Amtrak!

The Coast Starlight used to have the Pacific Parlour car for 1st class passengers. For a small additional fee there was California and Washington wine and cheese tastings and WiFi. Downstairs was a private cinema. As much and all the cinema was a real luxury, it wasn't used during the day as we were south bound having boarded at San Jose. I think ear plugs would be necessary for sleeping if I was in the carriage behind the loco. Don't forget the $1,200 fare can potentially be divided by three.

It depends what route you take. This is one of Amtrak’s long distance routes which isn’t really meant for transportation like the others, most people ride it for the experience. Amtrak and other operators have a lot of shorter utilitarian services around the country.

This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13 over the course of 1260+ years. Revelation 17 confirms that the beast is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!

Great video! Thank you! I took the Amtrak from Philadelphia to Seattle in October of 2021 which was two nights in a sleeper car like you had in this video and ironically chose the exact same foods you did in the dining car. Angus burger was actually very good slice of meat with little fat, the steak was fantastic and the "Railroad French Toast" was mind blowing. I traveled back to Philly from Seattle by train so the round trip was very expensive but not dealing with TSA and having people check my shoes and toes and put me through machines to see if I'm ok was a treat. I walked through the scenic car and went to the cafe but I had six meals on the train and had no desire for snacks. The scenic car was nice but if you got your own sleeper car then why be in the scenic car? You got your own private view. The shower was nice but try showering as the car rocked back and forth on the railroad. Roomettes are too small. To be in a roomette for two days would be too confining while the sleeper car made it much more comfortable. My sense was the view was breathtaking and once in a lifetime. The sleeper car was very very very expensive which is a pity because most folks would like it but even with the sleeper car you have very little room in the car once they put the bed down. I traveled on my pwn and two people in that sleeper car for two days would not be easy. It was perfect for one. Tip the porters before the trip starts.Red Cap service is good as they will ride you via golf cart to your train and help you with your luggage.

I took the Coast Starlight from Oakland to Seattle in summer 2010. I loved it! There was just one snag - I was in the sleeper car for one person, and the bed, instead of being perpendicular to the line of direction, was parallel to it. And since I was on the upper deck, that meant that the bed swayed considerably from side to side. If you can sleep on your back, that’s probably fine. But since I sleep on my side, that meant I was constantly being rolled over, and it was very difficult to sleep. I finally managed to get myself wedged in somehow, I don’t quite remember how, and slept for a few hours, lulled - no lie - by the engine horn. I woke up just as the sun was coming up, and was about to go back to sleep, but I decided to just open the curtain to see where we were. I’m so glad I did, because there, filling up the window, was 14,179‘ Mt. Shasta, still snow-topped, rose-gold in the rising sun! I certainly couldn’t go back to sleep after that. I was disappointed not to see it in this video, but then I realized that since it wasn’t made in summer, the sun wouldn’t have been up yet at the point when the train passed Shasta. Since that was the greatest of many beautiful highlights of the trip for me, I would advise anyone taking this train to try to find out what time the train will pass the mountain and set your alarm for it. You can probably see it lit by moonlight in winter. One last note - if you’re vegan, as I am, don’t expect anything wonderful from Amtrak’s vegan option. (It may have improved since 2010. 😉) The other people I talked to on the train said the normal food was quite good, though.

How funny, I pretty much had the same exact experience a couple years ago going from Emeryville to Portland. I ended up sleeping on my back and basically snored the train awake haha. 4:30 That's a GFCI/RCD (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter or Residual Current Device, depending on where you live). As long as it is still functional (which you can check by pressing the "Test" button and watching for the "Reset" button to pop out) it is about as safe as you can get in that scenario. Any current leakage going anywhere other than back to neutral (i.e. through your body and to ground) will immediately trip the outlet, cutting power to itself before you can be seriously injured.

I've done both the Chicago-Seattle and Seattle-LA Amtrak rides in Coach (back in 2018). The seats are great! They were both quiet enough that I got a double-seat each time, but generally I really don't think they're so terrible given the price of the roomettes. To tell you the truth, I deliberately fasted on both services because I was eating like a pig in all of those cities. I got about 5 hours sleep a night, but it was no real issue as I spent a lot of the night-time watching Netflix with my feet up. They're great journeys and I don't think someone should hesitate just because they don't want to pay for sleeping accomodation.

Welcome to the Rainy City! I hope that you did not get mugged upon exiting King Street Station. My husband did the same journey a few years back, although in economy class. He said that he spent most of his time in the viewing car, and that he made a lot of interesting friends.

I grew up in a small town 40 miles north of Seattle. I've taken the train from Seattle to San Diego CA and back. I had the thrill of sitting in a seat the entire trip 😊

I took my family on this train to Seattle two weekends ago. It was delayed 2.5 hours. Every single train Ive been on in the US has been delayed somehow, so I unfortunately have to stick to more reliable, and cost effective, means of transportation.

This train is on my "bucket list". As well as the California Zephyr (Chicago to Emeryville, CA) and the Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Los Angeles. The train horn is definitely an issue and bad on Amtrak to position the sleeper cars right behind the engines...they should have been at the back. Great review!! Look forward to the next one. On the cost? Well that's unfortunate since Amtrak is trying to "make money" and they certainly aren't for those riding in coach....as you saw with the fares. I agree staying 2 to a bedroom here is best for cost. Would I sleep in the top bunk? NO. I wouldn't.

The train horn isn't going away, so if it bothers you so much you can't sleep, please buy and use some ear plugs....
