Join me today onboard the Jungle express in First Class from Chiang Mai all the way down to Bangkok. The journey will take around 13 hours covering close to 500 miles - it will give me the chance to show you all the features of this new sleeper train. There are two levels of service offered, Second Class sleepers and First Class sleeper cabins. Only First cabins have access to showers of which I'll try out and let you know my thoughts.
This train has quite a famed dining car... but you'll find out why food today is well, quite non existent. I'll also break down the cost for this adventure - which may surprise you given the cost of similar overnight trains in Europe or indeed Amtrak in the USA.
As always with my trip reports and reviews, do let me know what you think - is this a rail journey you'd like to take?
0:00 - Intro
1:00 - Chiang Mai Station
3:30 - 2nd Class
4:43 - 1st Class
6:45- Bedtime
9:00 - The Shower
10:48- The Top Bunk
11:41 - Bangkok Station

Will, so sorry to hear about this "foodless" trip. 😱🤣. As an old timer, I learned many years ago that it's always a good idea to pack a picnic lunch with some beverages just for that unexpected journey where there is nothing offered to eat or drink. I always bring a little extra just in case my seat mate is without anything to eat. It's a great icebreaker also. Take care and have a great week.

@@Trektrendy I was born and lived in Canada till I was 9 ( I've grown up as a Brit ever since) and back then you could easily take the train coast-coast. Living in Mississauga ( near Toronto is easiest way to explain I guess) but with family on the island in Vancouver some of my 1st travel experiences were taking the ride across the country and marvelling at the sights and diversity of vistas. Us Canucks tend to be quite an adventurous lot anyway but taking that trip both ways at least once a year certainly helped boost my 'wonder lust' and ignited my passion to travel and experience the world. With 70 countries under my belt so far I guess it worked 🤣 I may be a bit biased I guessed but I've always told people they haven't travelled until they've spent some time in Canada and hopefully gotten out of the cities to experience the amazing nature my homeland has in abundance. Travelling on the Rocky Mountaineer ( or one of it's variants) is something I've often suggested as probably thee best way to see the country if they can afford it ( it's quite pricey eh). I'd suggest taking some extra memory cards coz it's highly likely you'll find yourself just wanting to capture everything. And as we're also known to be polite and apologetic i'll apologise in advance for how much editing you'll likely have to do too try condense it down into a suitable length video

I did 28hrs on a Burmese train in 3rd class a few years ago. No food (you had to quickly shout while stopping at random stations. A local saved me by buying me dinner, he was on third class so clearly wasn't rich his kindness humbled me as he simply wouldn't except any cash), hard wooden seats, hole in the floor toilets, open air windows and one of the single most fun trip ive ever done

Back in 1996 I took the sleeper from Bangkok to Surat Thani. After they made up the berths for sleep, I sat on my lower bunk and watched the scenery out the window. At one point we slowly passed by an open field that was nearly covered with fire flies. It was one of the most surreal and magical sights I've ever encountered.

Thanks for this vid! Nice to see what first class looks like on the special express trains 9 & 10. Not really brand new as you said but still looking superb indeed. When I took this train a couple of weeks ago, it was much fuller already and you could order sticky rice with mango which they then had delivered to the train at one of the stations near Chiang Mai and they offered instant noodles and instant coffee (staff had a water kettle set up on one of the seats, the restaurant section was not there/not operating). If food is still not available in the train, you can get food to take away from the restaurant in front of the station before departure. Eat it quick before the air-con freezes your meal! There are power outlets in second class though! In the corner next to each window. Warning: this train is a fridge on wheels with air-con set to freeze mode. Bring a windbreaker or other clothing that will keep you warm. The blankets resemble a large towel - the cold air cuts right through it. Upper berth, slightly cheaper, is colder than lower birth. Another tip: bring a sleep mask. Lights stay on all night, at least in second class. Welcome (back) to Thailand!

Shame about the lack of food, bet you were starved getting off that train! Great video, as always! Your videos inspired me to try domestic first class in the US. For the price, it was not great! But bottomless beverages and a rather tasty hot meal almost made up for the otherwise lackluster experience. Almost. 🤣

I drove with the night train as well in Thailand, second class, 3 or 4 years ago. It was an ok experience. For me the bed was to hard and the train felt much more shaky than trains in Germany. I had terrible back pain when the night was over and the lights are too bright at night, the curtain doesn't helped much against it. I slept not much or good, but my parents said they slept wonderfull in the train.
