in the 34th AC races, the boats just sometimes almost got up on foils during the windward legs. This year, I see they always get up. Wonder what was done to improve the performance.

The cats in 2013 weren't supposed to foil. It was a loophole in the design class that etnz found. 2017 there's a difference of 25 feet, less crew, design element to foil.

2 inexplicable splash downs after gybes spoiled better speed displayed by the US. I noticed at 24.08" to 24.17" a twist down on the port side forward cross beam of US. Would that be lift from the port rudder foil??

Interesting observation. I could be wrong, but I think the leeward rudder usually has some lift, while the windward rudder has some down force. But that's opposite to what you're asking... so I just don't know! 😎

It was pretty clear Spithill did not alter course and in fact ETNZ had to turn 'up' a bit. Penalty.

Spithill is twisting that control on the steering wheel like a bikie gang member on a motorbike. Burling doesn't have to do anything. Oracle was obviously very unbalanced.

I don't understand the penalty given to the US on the crossing. When I used to race sailboats, you couldn't go "hunting" like NZ did (i.e couldn't fall off the wind to purposely cause a situation). "hold your course" used to mean something. I guess not in the AC though.

It's called a dial down and it's allowed in match racing but not fleet racing.

@@SaulOhio no they didn't which is why they copped a penalty. Etnz are allowed something like 15° either way. Had they done so, collision. Ken Reed stated this.

Very boring. This is not match racing, but drag racing. The speed and the caution it imposes striped it of the intricacies of tactics and rules play, ie. largely killed the excitement of match racing.
