I greatly appreciate you showing the type of roads that access the trailheads. We are a retired couple with a 24' Class C motorhome, so it is good to see which roads we can travel down and which ones we need to enjoy vicariously through your videos.
36 hours? I lived in Eureka for 13 months, it was amazing! All the redwood trails are incredible, but Stout Grove was always one of my favorites too! There is just something magical about a redwood forest.
Yes, they have planted them all over. In Scotland and New Zealand too! I lived in the Chicago area as a kid. La Grange Park. I remember going to the Brookfield Zoo and seeing the tropical rainforest exhibit when it was new!
We couldn't agree more. As a former park ranger, I put together this site with insider tips on how and where to see the big trees there: redwoodcoastparks.com/redwood-national-park/
The past couple years I’ve driven through the redwoods and took a few of the hikes that you did. I did all that you did except the tall trees hike. This past September I took three days to see parts of the redwoods I had never seen before and stayed only at local non chain motels and that was a highlight. We hiked around the avenue of the giants and even did a ranger walk which was phenomenal and free. And I finally saw fern canyon. Trillium falls loop is mind blowing. You have to come back and do the entire loop. It’s not hard but it’s so beautiful. Especially if you see it when I did in May when the trillium are in full bloom and the falls are at their peak. Thanks for posting. I love your posts about this beautiful state in which we live
Thanks for sharing and for the suggestions. I agree that I need to do the whole Trillium Falls Loop, I was surprised by how amazing it was just in the small section that we saw.
After watching your video we left Arcadia California to visit our granddaughter at university of Oregon then we headed out to Redwoods spectacular and hikes are very easy and so so beautiful 👀🌲thank you🌲🌲🌲❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for this video! I’m planning a 2 day trip through the redwoods and you hit a lot of the hikes I wanted to do. I was debating on Trillium Falls but now I know we can just do the short hike to the falls and back! Perfect. And I also think Stout Grove is so beautiful:)
Ah Redwoods NP. I had an interesting experience there several years ago. I had to have a tow truck pull my truck, which got stuck halfway off the road on a steep hill back onto the road. (A car was coming the other way and wouldn't share the road so I kept having to get further and further over until I basically had to go off the road to not hit them, but also almost rolled down the mountain doing so. And got stuck.)
When the Dyerville giant, a tree in the southern part of the park, blew down in a storm a few years ago, there was mud splattered up to sixty feet high on the sides of other redwoods hundreds of feet away. Must've been an amazing sight if anybody had actually been there to see it. I personally have been in the redwoods during an earthquake and was able to witness a huge redwood vibrate like a giant guitar string moving over a foot to each side near the ground! Love your channel, love your attitude, keep up the great work!
Great vid !! They filmed 2 scenes in Fern Canyon - Dieter Starks death and also the night raining scene with Vince Vaughn walking & chatting with Roland and Jeff Goldbloom talking to Ludlow while the entire group of everyone is hiking to the worker village. They filmed a scene at Big Tree on the Circle Trail where Jeff & Juliane Moore are "returning to base camp".
This is awesome. We are tentatively planning a road trip there either this year or next, depending on Covid-19. My wife has mobility issues and this was an absolutely fantastic insight on what to see and length of the trails etc. It was such a great video to watch and very informative. Thank you.
I'd like to see you add a note in your description about who Lady Bird Johnson was. I doubt many people under the age of 50 have an idea of her impact on conservation and the national parks. Maybe there is a RU-vid video about that part of her life.
Great video, as usual. I love seeing both you in the videos. P. S. Thanks to your great video on Santa Cruz island, my daughter and I finally camped there. It was AWESOME. your video made clear on how to book. Love your videos!!!
I was born near Eureka, which is just south of the park. When I was young, we moved to Arizona and I've been here ever since. I sort of have a slight anger built up around the subject. Because the area of Az we moved to is boring as all heck... Yet I was born in a wonderful area. One day, hopefully soon, I will hike the Redwoods and enjoy the peace
Moved from Tucson to eureka so I understand lol it's boring as heck both places but definitely more beautiful and fun nature wise with the redwoods and ocean and lakes. Arizona is a different type of beauty.
Big Basin National Park has some massive redwoods and a couple of nice waterfalls. It is located about 40 min from San Jose and 90 min from San Francisco.
It had been almost 5 years since I had been as well, and that was the only time I have ever visited. Such an awesome spot but very far off the beaten path!
I just got back from a trip to the Redwoods, one of my favorite places on Earth! I didn't get to see as much as I would have liked so definitely would love to go back. Thanks for including all of these Scenic spots on your trip, not only is it helpful but I love looking back at all the beauty that exists in that incredible place. 🌲☺️🌲
Great Video.. I watched all of your informative San Francisco videos before we went.. Do you know if any of these groves were used in Return of The Jedi?
Out of all the videos I've seen about this area this is the first time that I ever heard you needed a code to get in there thank you for that information I think it's just good to know ahead of time
Look Mom I took Notes! Hotel in Eureka Redwood National and State Park • Thomas H Kuchel Vistor Center in Orik - Code for Tall Creek Grove • Lady Bird Johnson Grove • Tall Trees Grove Trail Head - Steep on the way up Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park • Newton B Drury Scenic Parkway • Big Tree Trail Paul’s Famous Smoke Samon Klamath • Falls Overlook • Trees of Mystery Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park • Stout Grove Day Two Hotel in Klamath Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park • Fern Canyon ($8) • Gold’s Bluff Beach (Camping) • Trillium Falls Trail
Wish we could have shown you the good stuff! As you said, this park is so hard to explore for a first timer. Pro Tip - Find a local guide like Redwood Adventures, the NPS intentionally holds back alot of information and promotes some places I would never send folks too. The alluvial flats with the monster Trees are really easy to get to, but "secret" locations, I feel way more awesome than Stout Grove or Tall Trees Grove. Join us!
Great video of the area I live in! I noticed the video is 3 years old so just a heads up that now you have to make appointments to visit both the Tall Trees Grove and Fern Canyon, whereas before you just had to stop and get a code for Tall Trees and just show up at Fern Canyon. Also, sometimes the water is too high for making the water crossing on the way to Fern Canyon, in which case you have to park and walk in from the water crossing.
I think I was at the Tall Trees Grove. I'm not sure because I took a different route (Redwood Creek Trail). You said they get up to 360 feet, but if you're at the same place I was, you saw at least one that was a little taller than that.
I am horrified to see nature lovers just ignoring a whole lot of things.Seeing a tree cut trough so turist can walk easily makes me feel sick.Well maybe I am someone who like to see things as they should bee.You guy treat this place like going to Disney, shame on you.
I miss Eureka I was based in a small naval facility near Ferndale , Centerville Beach its closed now. But used to go up to Eureka all the time since it was the biggest town , and loved to drive the avenue of the giants
Oops! I should have waited until I watched the entire video before posting a comment. This is a super video and it felt like I was there with you. As I might be driving to the west coast next year, we'll try to work it in. Thanks for posting.
Living in Fortuna, I get to see this all the time. Lived here since '72 and I still haven't seen it all. Seen the Dyerville Giant and the Flatiron trees before they fell. I hope you stopped by Dyerville Grove and Rockefeller Forest on your way through. Avenue of the Giants is also a must drive. Since it parallels 101, there's no reason to miss that.
@ZowyTheRottweiler I do. My daughter and I take drives quite often, especially right after storms. When these blow down, it's like a bomb went off. Another poster mentioned the Dyerville Giant splattering mud 60 feet up on other trees. But he didn't mention that it fell against another that is about 100 feet away, and it stripped limbs and bark from about 150 feet up. At 367 feet tall it was once the third tallest known. Now, laying on the ground, it gives another perspective that is still awe-inspiring. A few years ago another tree fell across it and crushed the base while splintering into what looks like a pile of lumber. It is hard to describe the sheer size of that tangle of trees. We find new trails to explore all the time. I am lucky to live here.
Can you kindly make a list your of ALL your travels video like: days one(what time you started and what time you ended) , day two, your stay....etc.... like a excel listing!!! So we city dweller can easily just dulicate exactly your trips. ? thanks.
Josh, where did you get the hat you're wearing in the video? Been on the Coast. Canon Beach to Redwoods to Silver Falls to Columbia River Gorge the last 9 days and was hoping to find it. You're videos played a BIG part in planning our itinerary. Thank you. You have a great channel!!!
I've watched several of your videos showing hiking paths, scenery, etc. Is it really that beautiful that nothing looks real? Everything looks so perfect. The paths in this video look clean, you guys are NEVER swatting at bugs, and everything is such a perfect green! Is CALIFORNIA seriously THAT beautiful??
I only have 1 video from the Redwoods and now you're giving me incentives to make a few more. 😎💚 I've been in love with the California Redwoods since my then-boyfriend/now-husband took me to see them in 1987. You're doing a great job showing some of the best parts. I haven't seen your list of videos, so forgive me for asking if you've been down to Rockefeller Grove (which is along the Avenue of the Giants)? If not, it's my second favorite Grove, second only to Holland Hill Rd and the multiple groves along it. Both are worth hiking through, and Holland Hill is extraordinary in a Wrangler with the top down. 😎🥰 Hope to see you out and about next time!
I finally learned what your second channel is called. This video popped up in my feed & I have subscribed. I had an aunt & uncle who first lived in Arcadia, and then Tehachapi.
Did you know that the world's second-highest trees are found in Tasmania, Australia? They are the giant Swamp Gum and Mountain Ash forests of central Tasmania. "Centurion", a Mountain Ash, is the highest tree in Australia and has just reached 100 metres. It's the highest flowering plant in the world.
My favorite part of trillium falls is seeing the endangered trillium growing everywhere. We had them growing in the forest behind our house when I grew up. The older they are the darker mauve they become. Don’t pick them because you kill the plant and they don’t easily reproduce. But they are one of my fav flowers in the world. And they grow in temperate rain forest climates only. Cool we have that here in CA. Thank for posting
I went to school in Humboldt and that fact any of the Forest are named after foreigners still bothers me but it’s an amazing experience as a divine hi my an being to be present amongst some of the oldest living things on the planet
Beautiful, absolutely gorgeos videos. You are forcing me to start exploring CA. I will appreciate if you could let me know the Camera you use to capturre these videos and the video editing program(s). Thanks and regards Ananda
