#36 Irrigation System For Small Farm - Using a Trash Pump To Irrigate From a Pond

We needed to set up some irrigation for the farm. Using a basic trash pump and black irrigation line, we've rigged up a simple system capable of dropping over 100 gallons per minute on the field. Since we don't have a well or municipal water source on the property, setting up some pond irrigation is about our only option. We'll probably expand on this irrigation system over time, but this will help us water our plants here in our first year.
Irrigation products we now use...

I have had the same problems a few times in the past when it comes to pumping directly from a pond, dam or river. Your best bet is to build a small pontoon (floating platform) for the submersible pump ot pick-up to hang from and tie your waterline to it with a flexible pipe. this way you never hit the bottom of the pond and you also stay in the water as the level of the water lowers in dryer months... my 2 cents. :)

Good idea! That would be an easy off-season project. Thanks for sharing.

That sure is a lot of hose you had to run but every thing looks like its working good now .The water should make the trees grow good now

Yeah. It's been wet since the fall, then right when we plant the trees we have a 2 week dry spell. Needed to get some water down. We're back in the rain every couple days pattern now, so all good

Those grey hose barbs are not garden hose threads (GHT), they are pipe threads (3/4" NPT). You can sort of jam a hose onto NPT, but it's not a good long term solution. You can get brass adapters to go from NPT to GHT.
@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm 4 года назад
Interesting. I didn't know that. Seemed to hold up just fine for what I'm doing so far, but will keep an eye out for the adapter you're taking about. Thanks for watching!
@pcofranc
@pcofranc 4 года назад
@@WoodsTreeFarm Layne is correct - the conversion adapters are cheap and easy to install. MGHT or FGHT the come in brass and PVC. Hose threads are NOT tapered and rely on the rubber washer to make the seal. NPT - National Pipe Thread - is tapered so it gets harder to turn as you tighten it because the threads are wider apart (tapered) and that is how to seal is made. Hose threads are like a type of compression fitting that depend on pressure against a sealing surface to prevent water from escaping.

Great video and a few thoughts ... 1. The manifold could downsize to 3/4 or 1" right away 2. drop with 90 or better 45 degree elbows to the base of the pump where 3. it could be screwed down to a piece of plywood to stabilize the manifold and reduce stress when hoses are attached & reduce movement from pressure spikes and vibration from the gas powered pump. The pump could be placed on top of or screwed down to a flat piece of plywood. 4 the pontune as suggested is an excellent idea AND I would add an above ground tank - when water is drawn it creates powerful siphon force with help from gravity. 5. Consider a passive storage system using a small inexpenive windmill that pumps water in to and above ground tank and possibly part of the system could be gravity fed slow drip [downside - more hose would be needed for distribution as you would be able to broadcast water by spraying.] I am going to be performing maintenance on and existing small windmill pump system.

excellent info. I've been keeping my eye out for some of those 300 gal IBC totes that I can use for storage and do some gravity fed watering

You will fry that pump in minutes! You’re jamming a 3” inlet into 1” distribution from the git go. And then trying to push the pencil lead hundreds of feet... uphill!

False. I ran this pump over 60 hours last summer with this configuration but I'm open to suggestions if you got something better.

I use a bigger 4in water/trash pump to irrigate my smaller fields (1-5 acres) of veggies via drip tape irrigation. Connect a lay flat hose directly to your pump, I’m guessing yours is a 2in water pump? Then run it across your field or whatever your set up is and connect smaller pvc pipe to the lay flat, then connect the sprinklers to the pvc pipe. But sprinklers and pvc require more pressure. Have you looked into drip tape?? I feel it’s easier to use that instead of sprinklers then the kind of setup you have... Professional Vegetable grower here who irrigates my fields from ponds and rivers using these small has pumps all the way up to big diesel water pumps.
@johnsalcido5436
@johnsalcido5436 3 года назад
Also keep in mind that if you upgrade to even a slightly bigger pump you almost have to put some kind of irrigation filter or filtering system. Lines and the pump itself will get clogged up especially from pond.

Hello, great video! I'm looking to do the same, transferring water from river to my garden. If I attach to a hose with a Handheld spray nozzle, when I'm not using and let go of the trigger this will build-up pressure back to the transfer pump. Will this cause issues to the pump or is there a relief valve on these pumps? Thanks
@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm 3 года назад
I wouldn't do that, don't think they're designed for on demand spraying like that.

I think it's only rated for 28ft lift (elevation) but I've pumped 600ft distance thru 2inch line no problem. I've learned It'll lose a lot of pressure in long lengths of smaller diameter water line.

How often are you watering your trees? Im starting a venture from scrstch myself, alot of people are telling me watering from above with sprinklers wont give enough water to the roots, and because the abundance of water is left hitting the needles and greenery itll lead to a increased chance of rot, mold, and disease. What are your thoughts and opinions?
@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm 3 года назад
I've found that out the hard way unfortunately. This system does not put out enough for christmas trees when sprayed overhead. (i'm sure it would work for a smaller area, like for vegetables). There are plenty of tree farmers out there who irrigate overhead, but their systems are much larger than this one. I will irrigate every week when we're in the heat of the summer. I've found the bucket method (while a lot of work) to be quite effective at watering deeply. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ita-B8Hdcns.html

@@WoodsTreeFarm What radius are your sprinklers set at? Are they high flow sprinklers? I can see where it would not be enough water with running 3 sprinklers at once. Have you tried running a larger flow sprinkler 1 at a time? I am planting 1/3 acre dense pockets of shrubs (dogwoods and wild plumb) for deer cover and thought about using this method. I guess I am afraid of buying all this hose and it not panning out.

Most I did was 3. It probably could do more of these small sprinklers. I've recently moved to using a single 1.5" rain gun and that works good for getting more volume down

@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm 4 года назад
in this video (this was last year) I only had one per line. There wasn't enough pressure after running 200ft of the black 3/4" pipe to run more than that. This year I've cut down on the black pipe and I make longer runs of the 2" pipe to avoid losing as much pressure. I can still only get 2 off each 3/4" line though. Here's a more recent video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qpup272GAQE.html

@WoodsTreeFarm 4 года назад
More or less I'm using this same thing. I have some longer runs of 2" line now, and using shorter runs of 3/4" gets better pressure. I stopped using this on trees because it didn't put out enough water to water deeply, but it worked great on my flowers. Here's an update: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qpup272GAQE.html - you might want to jump to about the 8min mark.
