Being frugal sometimes means buying it for life. Going with name brand item that's $80 over the $20 can be smart if it's a long term purchase. The name brand will last for 15 years and the other item lasts for 2 years and you end up spending less money in the long run, as well as being better for the environment.

Frugal people are comfortable in their skin. They are not defined by external consumerism hype. They often have an internal calm that others don’t have. They are proud of their self sufficiency. That’s not true for cheap people.

In regard to makeup brushes and name brands: My husband asked me what I'd like for Valentines day about 18 years ago. The only thing I could think of was makeup brushes. Thinking he'd go to Walmart or Target I never gave it another thought. However, he went to the Fashion Mall near his office, walked in to Saks and purchases a set of Chanel brushes at nearly $300. Tho I tried to talk him into taking them back he refused. I still have them and they're STILL LIKE BRAND NEW. I just use my shampoo to clean them and let them dry and you'd never know they were almost two decades old.

Canned everything. Grew what she could. Saved everything! From the elastics on worn clothing and stitched up a set of curtains from old house dresses. My grandfather was raised right and is the best man I know. His hard work ethic, honesty, and straight shooting values... they don’t make people like that anymore. I’m still kind of young, though “behind” my friends socially. There are times I find myself jealous of the fact I don’t have a nice vehicle (bought my 2000 Silverado off the dad of a former coworker in cash increments over about six weeks) or that I don’t have the means to buy a house and am living with friends while I save for an apartment. Then I have to stop to remind myself that my friend who has a nice vehicle for both herself and her husband have a ton of credit card debt. My friend that owns her house has outrageous student loan debt that she’ll be paying off for decades. I may have debt, but at the rate I’m going, I’ll be able to have it all paid off within the next year and a half. I was also the most prepared financially when the pandemic hit and everything shut down. It really helped for me to put everything into consideration before wishing for their lives.

I was super jealous of my peers in university vacationing in Japan, Mexico, etc during breaks and they told me that they used their excess student loans to pay for it 😰🤯. Yup, not very jealous anymore after that, like you're gonna need to pay for student loans with interest after graduating.

It was $600 was was a crazy amount of money for my family. I couldn't believe he bought it. I have now been carrying that bag for 15 years and it still looks brand new and professional. I use it for work daily to haul my work files and lap top. There is no way a cheaper bag would have held up. I do buy bottled water but like you its for emergency only. A tip for free events, at least in the before times, is that some public libraries offer passes for museums and sometimes other places like zoos, that you can check out. So, you don't get the pass indefinitely and the library doesn't have unlimited amounts; they're checked out kind of like books - for a certain amount of time and the library only has a certain number of passes they can check out at one time. Also, many people forget that libraries also have DVDs, both of movies and tv shows.

I don’t necessarily like the “you DIY rather than hiring out”. Been there, done that...buuuuuut if it took me 4 hours and 2 trips to the hardware store, that isn’t being frugal, that’s just a waste of time (and my time is worth more than what the professional would have accomplished in less than half the time). Hubby and I both work full time and I have a 3yo and 8mo old. We are both handy and practical, but some things are worth spending the money on! I think frugality is more about seeing the value in things, not just the cost!

I am a veteran who recently had a house fire. Went to a local realtor to look for another house. We have no credit card debt, no outstanding bills, but our credit scores are low. The realtor helped us with absolutely nothing at all. I had to go out and find other options entirely on my own and it took us the better part of a year to get another place. No VA help, no realtor assistance, nothing. Thanks to everyone who is in a position to help and won't do it.

When we have to empty out our freezer (eat it to the bone), for de-frosting, we put styrofoam in it. Big blocks of it (we keep it in the house especially for it). It helps keep it "full" and it runs more efficiently! Better than leaving the spaces empty. It is a thing, no joke here!

So much of being frugal is "life skills." Being able to COOK is a huge one. Trying "safe" diy projects to learn is great. Do not start remodeling your house if you can't hold a hammer. That's just a great profit for a contractor. But, it is also true that "you have to have money to save money." As a single Mom there were times when I had to shop on the out-of-pocket instead of the best value. Buying that bigger pack of meat that was a little cheaper wasn't always possible. That, of course, was before Dollar Tree to help with stuff like deodorant and toothpaste.

On brands, sometimes buying the more expensive brand is cheaper in the long run. I found cheap jumpers look shabby at the end of the season whereas I have expensive jumpers from 10 years ago.

Maintenance cleaning/care on clothes also is a good way to save money. I took a sweater comb to a second hand cashmere sweater I found... Had to repair some rips, but after taking off all the pilling it looks fantastic again. Some items just need some tlc to be perfectly new once more!

I have a funny for this one. When my kids go to soccer practice, I grocery shop. They are playing in a more expensive side of town than I live. My Publix is often out of BOGO items. The nice side of town is hardly ever out of BOGO items b/c I believe the people who shop there aren't shopping for sales. One day, pre Covid, I was trying to use a "rain check." She said she had never done it before on the register b/c people in that area didn't request or use them. My mind was blown. The stores in the nice part of town also have the best clearance rack b/c I'm about the only person looking on them for a deal.

Then you can decide what you like, and watch for sales! I've done that a time or two. When I had 5 kids at the house i kept a list on the fridge and i told the kids to write what they wanted, if i saw it on sale @50% off or better? I'd buy it. They got most of what they wanted, just wish my Ex hadn't bought those dang PS# games! I didn't buy those on purpose!

We do two things about water that helps with other things #1 when I have empty quart canning jars I clean them ,fill with water and process for 5 min in my water bath canner(you can use preused seals for this as it's not a food safety issue) then store in my canning pantry then I have clean jars ready to go for next canning season plus emergency water if needed. #2 I save 1/2 gallon milk jugs, clean them squeaky clean, fill with water (you can add a drop if bleach if you want,we dont) freeze in my large freezers, they help take up the empty space making the freezer more efficient plus they are great for using in my coolers for picnics, camping, grocery shops, trips to keep things cold plus they are ready to wash up with as they melt and also as emergency water if needed. 😊 (that being said we do keep a case or two of bottles especially during this year but it's for emergencies or to offer my parents for the car ride home or trips when filling reusables isnt an option.)

Willette B Life's Journey: regarding your mortgage payment please set aside an extra $100 or so every month to make an extra 1 payment every year but label it as "principal only" if you'll do this, it will reduce a 30 yr mortgage to 20 years. You'll save about $95k by doing this over the price that you'll have to pay for the entire life of the mortgage. This is something that my GM told me to do, and years ago she was a bookkeeper for Macomb County Schools in Detroit Metro.
