500i is great until it breaks or won't start, which will definitely happen. With the old system you can troubleshoot and fix the problem but with the new injected and computerized system, you have no choice but off to the shop to get it fixed.

Bought my first 026 in either ‘83-84. At that time Stihl was practically unknown in this country. Still have it, ton of honest wear on her, to the point I stopped using it, needs some new parts like the chain cover but still runs well. I bought a new 261 a few years ago, has the same feel as the old 026, great saw. Best way to describe the 261 is it does exactly what you need it do.

Hey good day Growl. Thanks for the note. I love this 261 but after doing a lot of research, I decided to take advice from many subscribers and buy a second larger saw. A 462 (which I have been waiting on since March). Many folks have strongly suggested I should always have two saws with me in the forest - my "go-to" for most things and a bigger more powerful saw for the big stuff. I did a few videos and a survey of our community on recommendations you can find around the February to March timeframe. Short answer - this 261 is awesome but it is 50 cc - awesome power to weight ratio and I have not a single complaint except it is definitely not a saw for the big stuff. It will go through anything I have tried (albeit takes longer etc to get through big diameter stuff) but up to the 16" stuff it is awesome. But I am pretty sure you will miss the extra CC and HP of your Magnum - If you check out those videos you will see it working. Hands down I would buy it again without hesitation as my regular saw for sure, but I am pretty sure you will miss your big cc's. Also, my chainsaw guy told me not to use a bar longer than 18" on the 261 ( even though STIHL says you can go up to a 20"). I hope the videos help - especially watch #543 - I think it will give you more info as I explain and demonstrate why I needed a second, bigger saw. Best of luck!

Yup, i have a few saws in that age range including a Husky 371 with a 20 inch bar and an 066 Magnum for the bigger jobs as well as a tiny 020T. That 036 is a sweet saw, i have saw envy! Happy cutting.

I work for a place with a lot of stihl equipment. We still have some 036 saws floating around that were here before I started 23 years ago. They're still going strong.

I am having the same trouble trying to get my second saw I ordered too. Several months now and no ETA on it yet. Good luck!

Morning Ade. It is awesome - 100% satisfied with it. Great power and very lightweight. Just as many folks told me, it gets more powerful after the first 4 or 5 fills. Winter or summer, starts, and runs great. I have an 18" bar on it - my dealer suggested not to get anything longer as you lose power, so to speak, as the bar gets longer. I have also now ordered a second saw for doing the bigger diameter stuff - a MS462 with a 24" bar. But hands down, this 261 is the go - to saw for most everything. Good luck!

Good day Nick. Thanks for the Q. I am not an expert by any means but my own experience is that although STIHL lists that the 261 can take up to a 20" bar, my STIHL dealer does not recommend it. He told me that the drop in power between the 18 and 20" bar is very noticeable. I have never run a 20" bar on it myself but I trust him very much and therefore chose, and only run the 18" bar. Good day Cody. It may have been. I gave it a couple of snaps before using it. The guy there told me to re-tighten after a few rounds as it was a new chain and would stretch - perhaps I gave it too much. Thanks for the heads up. Cheers!

@@GPOutdoors I noticed the same, the chain should run a half rotation or so when you come off the trigger. Yours was stopping very quickly.

Your finding that the 261 power gets much better after the rings seat matches my own observations. Very few people even mention this fact with all of the saw reviews I have seen which are many.

I bought a 261 c and it quit after 22 hours. Dealer said a servo went bad in carb and caused piston and cylinder scoring. Warranty was up by 1 month but Stihl had dealer rebuild. I put a new chain on , used 1 tank and had to tighten chain. Chain was loose before next tank was done and wouldn't adjust enough to tighten

This fall I shortened chain a link and started it to check oiler and it ran out of gas. I mixed new fuel and filled the saw and it wouldn't start. I blew out the cylinder in case it was flooded and still nothing. My dealer has passed away last year so I'm going to try a new one. Do I have a lemon? I need a recipe for stihl lemonade...

We've got a 630 super that's been doing firewood for over 20 years. I picked up a 261c and it's very comparable. The 630 has a bit more grunt in the low end but the 261 has a bit more chain speed if you don't push too hard. Pulls a 20" bar through softwood easily.

@@JohnSmith-tv5ep I grew up in Duquesne, moved around a lot with the military. Ended up living in Eighty Four for awhile. Now I live in Loveland, CO. We've had snow a few times already this year. But, it is SO different. Out here, you get a foot of snow over night. Two days later everything has melted away and is completely dry, and it's sunny out again. And the temperature is the craziest. With the dryness, the temps ALWAYS feel at least 10º warmer. Back in PA, the humidity and cloud cover always makes it seem colder and less comfortable. I really liked PA, it'll always be "home". However, Colorado is where my heart is. It's amazing out here.
