The only thing better than a 37 is two 37's! One day in June 2015 my wife and I got to Preston to take the 10.04 to Kents Bank, and found DRS coaches topped and tailed by tractors - much nicer ride than a DMU.
Wrong engine. 12 pistons, 12 cylinders of English Electrics finest rail work ! 16cylinder 16 piston in class 40, a little less successful version due to power to weight problems. Only engine with 2 pistons per cylinder is 18 cylinder 36 piston napier deltic in class 55 locomotive. (A smaller 9 cylinder version was fitted to class 23 baby deltic but none of this class survive)
They're still used on Sellafield trains on the Cumbrian Coast Line and in summer you can hear them over half a mile away. Big miss on the passenger services as you had Inter City levels of comfort and more space for luggage.
I literally just made it - if you'd started filming 10 seconds earlier you'd have had hurtling down the steps past the girl casually walking down. But she made it too. Happy memories - thanks for sharing.
The nearest parallel I can think of, is going to a vintage race-car event where thundering V8's relive old times, replacing screaming multi's just for one day. Truly wonderful music to my ears!
Such a unique sound... it had soul compared to the locos of today... they are just bland. Mind you I live in Canada now, they still have some of their old freight locos running.... they have their own sound too... totally different.
My biggest problem with this video is you didn't stand beside her the whole time she was their. Tne music off a 37 engine is perfect. Thank you for sharing
